Confessions of a shopaholic movie commentary reaction
Confessions of a shopaholic is a movie for which we really had a lot of commentary. Isla Fisher plays a journalist with a serious spending problem and it's both hard to watch and a lot of fun.

I seriously believe Isla Fisher is such an underrated actress. She literally CARRIED this movie on her back, like she makes a potentially very annoying character such a loveable trainwreck. Too bad this movie didn't do too well in the box office and unfairly trashed by critics. Edit: Btw that blonde girl from the auction is from the Cabin in the Woods..

Even though the debt guy is doing his job it's relatable to people to see him as the villain because they really are that stalkerish in real life. It's so much of an issue that here in America, that it was brought up in politics a little while back as something to reform. Paying off debts is important and this movie is a comedy but for people who aren't this frivolous and genuinely had no other choice, people see debt collectors as villainous, especially since people tend to get into debt by predatory means. I'm sure you guys know that though, just wanted to say it anyway.
@V_4_Versace

Most of his tactics were extremely illegal, some of it might have been okay when this movie came out but debt collection has reformed a lot in the last decade or so. I’ll just say if a debt collector is doing anything close to these tactics you should report and possibly sue them and they will remove the debt if you complain because it’s not just kind of illegal it’s like felony level type illegal and any legitimate agency will get in serious trouble for the stunts he pulled.

It's not a coincidence. He is rich, he can own all trendy clothes and stuffs he want to, but he is not interested in that. He has very healthy relationships with money, he values your personality, honesty, authenticity etc., while Rebecca try to satisfy herself by buying empty stuffs and ruins her life. Rich CEO is there not only for romance aspect but for contrast, like: "I can buy whole new prada collection, but it doesn’t make me happy. You can't buy love and happiness." Rebecca was unhappy and lost, she tried to deal with emptiness by buying stuffs, but it never worked so she had to buy more.

If I recall correctly (and it's been a good long while since I read these books) Derek Smeath wasn't a bad guy. They paint him out to be the villain, but in the end Becky realizes that he's just doing his job, and they have a nice final moment of mutual respect when she turns in the money. I thought that was a way better ending than the pettiness in the movie, as fun as it is. I love the campiness of this movie, thank you both for doing it!

Rewatching this…again (hehe) and I so do agree with you!! It would have been that much more of a character resolve to see that mutual respect and resolution. I think it would have added impact to show how even her perception of him was skewed to protect her addiction. Just like the mannequins. To then come back to her fixing her wrongs and seeing him in a whole new light and having that realization would have been even more *chefs kiss*

Here in my country, debt collectors depending on the company, are very much stalkers. I get it that Derek in theory is doing his job, but we see him in the movie saying to his coworkers things like "befriend them and then blackmail them with all their debt", that's very much abusive and illegal. I think Derek totally deserved what happened in the end of the movie, he was rude even to his coworkers and we see that too.

I actually read the first few books in this series. Quit reading because it became too much to stomach. It’s a happy ending for the movie but she ends up back in debt several times before it finally sticks. I’m assuming it does stick as I gave up on the series before I could find out. In this way, the series does illustrate that she’s an actual addict. It’s just portrayed pretty light hearted and there is so no sense of urgency because her husband is a literal millionaire
@gayathriK2661
@gayathriK2661 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, same here. I gave up a few books in because she NEVER seemed to learn her lesson. She'd reach some personal growth at the end of a book only to slide back to square one all over again. Like, I get that that's how addiction is, but it's so frustrating to read about. I will admit that she genuinely CARES about the people in her life and does own up to her mistakes (even if it takes her a good long while to realise how she messed up). Plus, she tries to solve her messes by herself without getting Luke's money involved - from what I remember anyway. But all that said, I am happier not following up on the rest of the series

Spoiler alert: in 'Shopaholic to the Rescue', she gets a huge wakeup call, and... actually feels sick at the thought of spending the money in the first place, never mind having to pay it back. The theme running through all the books that really stuck with me is how important a community is for learning to resist an addiction.

I personally found it really difficult going from a wealthy family to trying to make ends meet on my own. Budgeting was fine but I did find it hard and upsetting denying myself things I wanted. (I'm not talking big luxuries, I mean anything that wasn't basic food or rent). The hardest bit was when I started getting good money and really had to control the impulse to buy dumb stuff that I didn't need because once you lose control it can absolutely get away from you. It's not just about the money, it's the waste of stuff and you only have so much room and you can never find anything you actually need.. so you buy more.

TL;dr: Derek was breaking the law and should be in jail. He was not justified in what he was doing at any point in the movie and he is the villain. I love this movie but I wish the writers did some research on the laws surrounding debt collection. What Derek was doing is harassment and debt collectors aren’t legally allowed to do that. He can call her ONCE a day, he can even come to her house during normal hours, but he can’t literally hunt her down anywhere she goes. He REALLY isn’t allowed to show up at her work either. Derek was actually stalking her, and he didn’t have a legal right to harass her the way he was. The security escorting him out would have been valid whether she lied about him being her ex or not. Also, debt collectors can’t threaten to place a lean on someone’s house unless the house was already put up for collateral when the original debt was incurred. Derek is seriously breaking the law and it has always grated on me when I watch this otherwise fantastic movie. OH I FORGOT- He’s DEFINITELY not allowed to share her debt with anyone else, ESPECIALLY not strangers, and *ESPECIALLY* not on LIVE TV. Everything he did was wrong, and illegal. Derek should be in jail.
@xXPixXx
@xXPixXx Жыл бұрын
Thank you!! I always thought what he did was dubious, even though I don't know the specific legal stance on everything. Also I don't know how he thought outing her on live TV was a good idea?? Because he got her fired?? So how tf was she gonna pay the debt he wanted her to pay then? It's not like she has the money just lying around or something. Extremely cruel and short sighted tactic honestly.

i recently rediscovered this movie and i really love it. it's pretty solid, and as someone who also struggles with an addiction (kind of an obscure kind that many would probably laugh at--kind of like how some initially would at the idea of a shopaholic--but is very much a constant struggle in my life), very relatable mc and situations overall, outside of some of the hollywood-style exaggerations lmao. personally, i do think what mr. smeath did was a little cruel, mocking and making fun of her on live televisions in front of thousands, potentially hundreds of thousands, is pretty unnecessary. i understand using it to make contact because he was being thwarted in every other way, but dragging it on just to humiliate her wasn't okay. once he'd proved he was an actual debt collector and that she owed money, he could have ended it there, but he didn't. so i do think he was deserving of the payment in pennies, not because he did his job tracking her down for years, but because of his cruelty in the end. but anyway her parents were great, and actually very realistic. they were in some part responsible (obviously not solely, but definitely not blameless) for rebecca's issues later in life, however unintentional, which is pretty common. even really good parents can make mistakes that cause their kids grief later on. but they're loving and there for her, especially when she's at her lowest point. and i do think it was fine for them to bail her out (not always realistic, true, but then we would have had a much more depressing ending because irl the people who don't get bailed out end up in extremely poor conditions at best), because that was the essence of their characters; material things weren't what was important to them, even things they'd saved for their whole lives. the people they love are what's important. which is a good lesson for everyone, but especially for people like rebecca who have an unhealthy/unbalanced love for material things. so she was being partially bailed out yeah, but by the people who, out of everyone in your life, _should_ be the most willing to come to your aid when you need it, and it was their choice to do it, not something rebecca asked them to do. loved it. also as an extra sweet moment, i love that it was her dad that talked to her, not her mom? usually it's a mother-daughter moment in these kinds of movies (when both parents are alive). loved seeing a father-daughter moment. :') this comment is ridiculously long, sorry. loved the reaction, i always do. if you guys ever do tv shows at some point, on this channel or another, i would _REALLY_ love to see you guys react to Anne With An E. one of my all time favorite shows, so incredibly well-made, and covers really great topics. the discussions would be fantastic

This movie shows two different types of “shopaholic” in one person - A hoarder who indulges in all things consumerism and “gifts” has a love, like and hate language finds material things as something supernatural in significance. It’s a type of iconography. However most shopaholics are indulgers broadly - usually overeaters - they lack moderation when it comes to dopamine due to anxiety or depression. It’s a way of self-medicating.

It may have been a bit different back when this movie was made, but as of right now, debt collectors are only allowed to track you down to retrieve your address, phone number, and work info through a third party, and only with the intention of finding other ways of contacting you (collection letters and the like). They cannot physically track you down the way this guy does in this movie. They can only contact you at work if your place of work allows you to take personal phone calls. If not, they can't call your work place. They're allowed to contact friends and family as a way to try to get in contact with you, but I believe there's a limit on how often they can do so. They can threaten legal action, but only in the vein of getting lawyers involved to garnish your wages; they CANNOT threaten to have you arrested, or put a lien on your house or car or the like (unless, of course, the debt you owe is FOR your house or car, lol). That being said, I do agree that the way the movie presents it, she's not in the right for paying off her debt in that petty way, lol.

You know, I wasn't the biggest fan of this movie when it came out because it deviated so far from the books (I LIVED for the book series as a teen) but I will always give it props because movie Luke is far superior to book Luke! And also getting rid of the incest...that was a great choice.

YES!!! I was meaning to comment requesting this film for you react to so thanks for the delightful surprise! If you're going for more rom-coms would you please consider 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding" or "The Holiday"? I think you would have fun with those. And if doing animation again; George of the Jungle (basically a cartoon in live action form with Brendan Fraser), Rise of the Guardians, Atlantis the Lost Empire, Rescuers Down Under (my top request) and Quest for Camelot?

I love this movie so much. They used to have credit card companies set up here (in Canada) at college/universities , offering students a free CD or free chocolate bar etc if they apply for a credit card. (As well as malls) I have so many friends who applied to like 10 cards in a 2 year span because they wanted the 'free' stuff. So they ended up in major debt /collections & had ruined their credit...all before they turned 20 because we were never taught about credit cards, personal finance or anything like that in school. I thankfully never got a credit card until I was 25 (I actually worked for a credit card company at the time so I knew how/when to pay and all the little tricks they do to gouge people for money so I was very careful with it). My parents always taught us about personal finances so even when I made minimum wage I never went into debt. I was lucky but most of my friends were in debt for many years. Thankfully though, several years ago the government here put rules in place to keep credit card companies off campuses so they can't take advantage of people's financial illiteracy . But that's here, not sure what it's like for other countries.

Also, I worked at the call centre for credit cards for 2 years and a lot of people have NO clue about their finances, the credit card rules etc. Most of us were trying to help, we'd tell callers the best way to pay off a card and they would just flip out. Even if we gave free one time fee waivers etc. Because we were the "Enemy". It's that whole shoot the messenger thing... Sadly, most people don't understand that using a credit card is borrowing from the company. So taking from the credit card company...and not paying it back is literally theft. For people that don't understand how the system works, they look at all representatives of the credit cards as "Evil". For us it was about 99% of callers completely financially illiterate (even though it was a Business Cards department), and therefore they'd all scream & verbally abuse us. When I ended up doing Escalations I was literally not allowed to hang up so I could be stuck on a 2 hour long call trying to explain & help someone and they'd just abuse me. The collections department had it way worse. So while all the agents try to do their job & help we were still always seen as the bad guys. Don't get me wrong credit card companies do a lot of shady stuff to gouge people for money & trick them into things, but us agents were always honest and set callers straight to find them the best solutions (So they wouldn't call back and harass us). While I love this movie, IRL all Rebecca had to do was answer the call and say she didn't have the money. They would have worked out a payment plan (one of my friends was in debt of $9,500 and the collections agents reduced it to paying back $6k, starting out with paying $35 a month then eventually she could pay more etc).

I’m thankfully not a shopping addict but I do have my “splurging” phases which isn’t exactly supported by a random spur of income (just went through it 😅). I can honestly relate as a person who likes fashion (and gender expression being a big part of it) to the impulse of buying✨pretty things✨because you want to make it a part of you. And then there’s the whole can of worms of addiction, hoarding, and stress buying which the movie seems to only surface but does a fairly good job at portraying! Of course nothing is wrong with buying something you’ll make use out of but it’s important to control our consumption for the environment! One thing I would’ve liked (besides axing the unnecessary female rivalry and making the friendship centre focus rather than the romance) is not giving her scarf back. She chose to part ways with it and I feel like that was strongly symbolic. It would’ve been nicer to have given her a new scarf instead.
