The fact that Astrid didn't call out Michael until his actions affected their son kind of broke my heart. She wouldn't stand up for herself, but didn't hesitate when her child was involved. Also, the "It's not my job to make you feel like a man" is perhaps my favorite line in the whole movie. Relationships are not vehicles for validation, and taking your insecurities out on your partner is not it.

An incredible detail in the scene where Rachel and Elenor play the game, is that Rachel actually had a wining hand, and as she tells Elenor that she turned Nick down, she gives Elenor the piece she needed to win the game. Elenor wins the game because of Rachel, which mirrors the sacrifice she made for Nick, essentially showing Elenor that she does in fact understand sacrifice and selflessness.

the wedding scene in crazy rich asians is the best wedding scene i have ever seen in any movie. that was the best use of music in a movie.

Fun fact, Eleanor's ring actually belongs Michelle Yoeh! When she saw the ring they originally planned to use for Eleanor she was so unimpressed that she brought one from home😂 Now her ring is a prop that we go down in cinema history!🤩

The fact that Asian Aunties have been so accurately represented in this movie and I love it.

The mom giving her ring for Nick to propose was a great touch, especially considering the meaning of the ring. It was a good way to signal that Nick's mother had placed that stamp of approval without having to say it. Knowing they set up Astrid's future love for the sequel in the last moments of the film is the best teaser. I can't wait for her movie!

Awkwafina and Constance Wu have such brilliant comedic chemistry. Not to say that the other actors aren’t equally funny.

The costumer did a great job with the outfits here. I especially like Astrid’s blue and white striped shirt for the bury-the-fish scene. They had established back in New York that blue and white were for Chinese funerals, and here we have it at a funeral! Also, that makeover scene might be my favorite one ever-the commentary is hilarious.

That smile and nod that Eleanor gives Rachel at the end hits me every time. It's not a gesture of full acceptance and everything is going to be great from now on, but a simple moment of acknowledgment and respect. Tremendous moment.

i love how this movie shows how in america, we chase after "individualism" and individual success. while in asian culture it's about family and supporting your family always. i think both are very great mindsets to have, but finding a balance between the two is important.

I really want to read the book! Apparently, they didn't want to commit to slander the 1% the way the book did, so it's 50% escapism and 50% soft critique. Astrid's husband never cheated in the book, he was treated terribly by the family and their love wasn't enough to sustain the constant bullying and ostracization he faced. They are a reflection of what could become of Nic and Rachel in the future, two good people's love ruined bc of elitism and snobbish & proud families, and the "rich" party in the relationship being too much of a people pleaser to really commit to abandoning their family. That's why Nic's proposal and him choosing Rachel was a turning point in the book probably - it gave her the opportunity to make a proper tactical move to end up with Nick while evading that fate. If it hadn't worked, she'd rather give him up than risk becoming like Astrid & Michael. It was never about Rachel being not chinese enough, but very clearly phrased that it was her background of poverty. She was simply from the wrong class. I really enjoyed this movie, but I would have liked seeing the original concept, too. Like, how far are you willing to go for love? Not sure I would put up with a family like that, but then again, that seems selfish, too, when you think about it.

I admit, when I was watching this in the theater, the wedding scene stood out most to me, quite literally caught my breath the moment the water started coming down the aisle! Though the mahjong scene is probably the most poignant, her choice in the game mirroring her choice with Nick, giving away the piece to let Nick's mother win and making sure she knew that - excellent writing that could (and in a lot of cases, was) overlooked!

The emerald ring that the mom is wearing is real and belongs to the actress, Michelle Yeoh. They had a fake one made but it looked really bad. So she got this one from her personal collection.

In the books Astrid’s husband never cheated he purposely made it look like he did so she would leave him and she finds that out. Which hurts so much worse to know your parter didn’t love someone else more they just really wanted to leave the relationship

You know what, I realized after watching this movie many times that Rachel could be an asset to the Young family business being an economics professor... and they don't see that lol

because Nick’s mom knew that the grandmother wouldn’t give Nick the family ring either, she gave HER OWN ring to Nick to propose to Rachel 😭💞

So ironic how Elenore is preaching about putting family first when her own husband bailed on the entire wedding party for work bc "when work calls, dad answers" loll

I always imagined that Nick's 'poor' circumstances at the start of the film was him establishing independance. Many families like this use money as a means of control- if he didn't behave he didn't get cash and he had ignored his mother's orders to return home. By the time he found himself in a relationship he realised that he could absolutely live this life. How they took to his choice of wife was the final factor on if he stayed or ran.

Rachel’s mom is the MVP of this movie. You see where the humour comes from.

The scene where the mom and Rachel are on the stairs is always so symbolic to me, the way they start on the same level, only for Rachel to get pushed down a step as the mom puts her down emotionally too 👌🏻 it’s so good 😩

Asian aunties really are something else ngl. I went on 1 date and my Gran who lives in a specialist dementia care unit knew about it, I told nobody but he told his mum who lives in Hong Kong and she told someone in his church over here and my Gran goes to the very same church but just for events. It’s an Asian church so even though he is from Hong Kong and my family is Thai there was STILL crossover!

Thank you for not gatekeeping culture, I'm half Greek, half Ukrainan but born and raised Canadian, I've dated a lot of people who were kids of immigrants or immigrants themselves and have struggled with people who always look down on me and say I'm not Greek or Ukrainan, culture is a really fluid thing

i lived in sg for a few years and it broke me and here's a couple of things about the movie: singapore has one of the worst property markets, despite having a lot of government housing. it's a running joke there that people get married to get a better chance at getting government housing. so the "humble abode" is an insane amount of money. it depends on the location, but still, insane also, just like the uk, accents are a huge thing in singapore, where you can tell so much about a person based on how they speak. yes it can tell you about class, but people could also tell which school people went to. peik lin's mom's accent is more of a typical singaporean accent while nick's mom sounds more like how singapore politicians talk. having a foreign accent -not even a posh one, just a foreign, native english speaker accent- makes people think you're rich (and sometimes stuck up ngl). definitely led to a few weird convos with taxi drivers and hawker aunties because i look local but sounded foreign. and also, hawkers (the food scene in the beginning) are awesome. you can get a good meal for a few bucks, and iirc there's a stall that has a michellin star. i used to get nasi lemak at the hawker behind the school i went to for like 2.50.

I like the fact the writer(s) of the Book/film also gave other characters (such as Astrid, the Gohs, and Nick's other family members) the floor not just Rachel and Nick. It just made them more humanizing despite being one of the most rich and pretentious people of the world.

The realization about Rachel’s mom went VERY different in the book. It happened in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, nick will literally ABOUT to propose, and Rachel screamed at her mom in anger for lying

I can understand Nick not telling Rachel for a while into their relationship about his family. But I think it's kind of douche move that he tells her pretty much NOTHING right before she's about to visiting her family.

I freakin love this movie, i aint rich but the family dynamics are so relatable Edit: 42:05 for context eyelid tape goes on top of the eyelid and basically tapes the upper eyelid skin to scrunch it together to form a fake temporary “double eyelid”. It’s a thing in a lot of Asian makeup stores since a lot of Asians have monolids or epicanthic folds so it’s to get the double eyelid look.

The auntie on the plane is an absolute vibe. Literal spirit animal.Telling her to hurry up but then being invested in the convo😂😂

Just realized, Astra went to the Bachelorette weekend dressed in white and blue, because she's unconsciously (it is navy for an island trip, after all) grieving death of her marriage, even if she can't accept it yet.

You guys are one the best when it comes to movie reactions. The whole vibe between the two of you is surely unbeatable. Crazy Rich Asians gives you that warm, fuzzy feeling that you don’t ever want to let go of. The fact that family stays together til the end is so reassuring to a lot of people who may feel loneliness deep within.

Unpopular opinion, but I disliked how Nick let Rachel at the mercy of his mother's attack. If it was because of the immigrant rule of always respecting your elders I wouldn't have mind it, but the fact that it's because "she's strong"?? Absolutely no

God it doesn't matter how many times I've seen Crazy Rich Asians (which is a LOT, probably one of the films I've seen the most) I LOVE watching people watch it for the first time, especially the ring reveal at the end. I remember seeing that scene in theaters and iirc I cried lol

As a recommendation: a very good movie that I think k has an interesting take on the "east vs. west" mentality but without villianizing either side I think is "The Farewell". A great indie movie by an Asian director

Nick knew exactly how his family would react and that’s why he was ‘acting poor’ he was anticipating what life would be like and that’s why he didn’t warn her. Which sucks and he should’ve told her. I do like that legitimately apologizes though

in the books i think that astrid's husband was waaaay more worse because from what i remembered he didn't even cheat at all. he just staged all the texts and all the suspicious stuff because he was insecure about astrid lol. i still think that astrid's development in the books were more fun to read compared to rachel's and i can't wait to see more of it in the future movies. thanks for reacting to this btw always love you guys' reactions :-))

Why am I just now realizing Rachel's specialization in Game Theory is the tie-in to the Mahjong scene. I was thinking of it as an intrinsic quality, saying she's good enough. But it's actually a tie-in to her mind, culture, and personal accomplishments saying she's good enough BECAUSE they're where she comes from.

iirc, the author of this book is singaporean, but he was not at the premiere in singapore at all because if he came to singapore he would be arrested because he evaded conscription

the thing that lowkey pisses me off about men like Michael is the fact that if it were the woman who was not as wealthy he would've been perfectly fine with that dynamic. I'm getting tired of repeating the fact that we're in the 21st century, and frankly, to me jealousy is one of the most unattractive and repulsive traits of human nature that a person could have.

I saw this movie twice in theaters. There’s maybe 1 movie per year that can get me back in the theaters twice. It gives you all the happy feels with a little bit of a heavy heart at times. Such a rare gem!

I had an accident at my workplace a year ago and my mom was the one who picked me up and took me to the hospital, the way Rachel ran to her mom and how her voice cracked when she called for her and started crying after not breaking up until the mom shows up just gave me the most vivid flash back of that accident and how I did and acted the exact same way when I saw my mom had arrived and was there with me

I love this movie. The book is definitely more explicit than the movie. I was working in a movie theater when this movie came out. I saw it twice in theaters. I didn't realize that Sam was half Thai. That's really cool.

I remember watching this movie and quite liked it but around the time it came out, I also saw rightful criticism from Singaporeans about how the movie shows only Chinese families and people in Singapore despite there being a large number of Malay and South Asian people living there too (which, yes its the 1% here - the richest which im assuming are majority chinese but still). People wrote about how the race dynamics and so on were never addressed. Something to think about!

On the topic of going to school abroad...I went to a really good art university here in Canada, and I became friends with a girl from Thailand who was also attending this school. Her English was perfect, she attended a boarding school in India growing up, and used to say her English was better than her Thai because of that. Her family is rich and all still live in Thailand. I don't know how the conversation came up, but she was speaking with me and some other Canadian students about tuition...and she was shocked we all had student loans and that our parents couldn't afford to pay for our entire post-secondary education. when i saw the wedding scene in theaters i started crying, it was just so well done and so beautiful

What a great video! 😍To me I didn't understand it as an ethnic problem and more of an issue with the "specific cultural mindset" you get when you grow up in a place. So basically it's not that she's half-chinese per say, it's that she grew up in America (far away from the chinese culture) that is the real turn-off for the mother. She thinks (kind of rightfully so), that the fundamental difference of ideology between eastern and western culture (pursuite of one's happiness V/s sacrificing oneself to build a legacy) will lead to unsurmountable barriers in Nick and Rachel's relationship ; eventually leading him to either work hard to maintain his family's legacy with an unsupportive wife (therefore being unhappy in his marriage) OR turning down the legacy all together for a life in America (which Nick IS actually considering... so the mom's not actually far-off in her assumptions) and both options look terrible for her. I believe she is rather unhappy in her own marriage because she confesses to Rachel that she was ill-prepared to the kind of sacrifices this life meant and the father doesn't appear AT ALL in the movie... (can't be bothered to show-up to family events: "too much work"). She doesn't want that for her son and whomever he chooses to start a family with. Of course, in her reasonning she fails to take into account how much Rachel is prepared to fight for their relationship and what kind of sacrifices Nick is actually prepared to make in order to make it work. She is so stuck up in all the ways this could go wrong that she doesn't see how it could happen any differently (forgetting that Nick is not his father and Rachel is not her, so they might not end-up like Nick's parents at all). Anyway, this was my way-too-long and overly-complicated analysis on this movie! lol

I love this movie! I lived in Malaysia during the time of filming and lived across the street from the restaurant in the opening scene. Fun fact - that restaurant was not in New York, but in Malaysia.

i remember how many asian folks had hopes pinned on this movie and i'm glad it really paid off for them. there has been a massive shift in east asian actors getting work in the west, even commercial work. but for me, this was always made for hollywood. i personally see a lot of nods to romance movies of the 30's and 40's, romcoms of the 90's, the elegance and opulance of studio tentpole pictures (think audrey hepburn in roman holiday), so it feels like asians in a hollywood picture. it doesn't feel like an asian diaspora story. as much as there are relatable elements, like i totally get feeling like shit because people judge you harshly when you don't look like a foreigner but you act like one, i don't think those bits are the center of the movie. however, i can appreciate it for what it is and i always have a fun time with your commentaries 💖 i hope you get to see michelle yeoh really flex her range in "everything everywhere all at once"! cuz the main emotion i felt while watching "crazy rich asians" was twitterpation every time she came on screen. the poise, the gaze, the serve... icon.

Typically, people with monolids (no eyelid crease) will use tape on their eyes so they can have double eyelids. Or they get surgery to have them permanently. Young girls are gifted with it for high school graduations for example. Double eyelids are seen as "more attractive". Beauty standards are gross.

I totally related to this way too much, ironically on both sides. My family is poor, but at the same time, my dad is the head of our family and pretty well respected, and I'm his only kid. And I'm just the third youngest kid in the family, that despite coming from a purely Latino family can't speak Spanish that well. I get the stress from having big expectations while at the same time get the struggles of being looked down upon for your class.
