Oxalis triangularis, also known as Purple Shamrock, is a strikingly gorgeous and simple plant to care for, provided you know what it needs. This is the 'Ebony Allure' variety from Josh's Frogs. Something many people don't know about the shamrock plant is that it's EDIBLE in small amounts, often used as a garnish on salads. The corms beneath the soil surface are also edible and are much sweeter than the leaves.

Anyone ever eaten their oxalis? Or can you not bring yourself to do it? P.S. I got mine from Josh's Frogs, who have offered a 15% discount on the entire store with code 'epicgardening' - not sponsored, they just want to hook up Epic Gardening subscribers :)

Epic Gardening - Hey Kevin l ordered other plants today for the first time since they are out of stock for the oxalis purple shamrock. Your “epicgardening” code didn’t work for me. so l called them up after l already ordered. Somehow the company said it was disabled, but, it should be good now for first time buyers! 🤗 Thank you for sharing “epic gardening” tips!

Oxalis is great as a house plant because they don’t like full hot sun -they like bright shade... I’ve been growing every variety of these for over 30 years, they can be gently repotted anytime -they don’t need to be in dormancy -and they love to be “deadheaded“, meaning keep plucking the wilted leaves at the base, (and even the flowers can go in a separate vase) and it stimulates them to grow more... I take my half dozen pots outside every summer and they sit on a shaded table on my patio and triple in size every year they just love it. Only have to be well watered once a week. The leaves will close if they’re in too much sun and will bleach out the beautiful colours...

Thank you for sharing Kevin!! I was able to save my Mom's Oxalis because it was too leggy and she overwatered it almost to death!! I changed the soil, cut back all the stems to the base and placed it under my growlights in my greenhouse!! Thank God it started sprouting new stems/leaves and now it's full and lush!! I'm afraid to give it back to her but I took a few divisions of it just on case, plus a few for me lol!!💜💜💜🥰

I have a large leaf variety of this and keep mine in bright shade by putting it at the shady north side of a shed with nothing blocking view of sky so it gets lots of indirect light. It seems really happy there. Also it seems to close leaves when handled so that's cool.

In California we have redwood sorrel (oxalis oregana) that's very similar looking but only purple on the undersides of the leaves. It likes to grow in redwood mulch in the shade of redwood trees. I've eaten it numerous times but never considered growing it as a house plant.

Powdery mildew would be a pain to treat indoors Kevin. But SB plant Invigorator or Whole milk would be a good way to deal with it. Spraying is weekly. But indoors should be dry enough so humidity os lower and id imagine that shouldn't become too much of an issue. Great video

I grow them outside, I live in Ma. You can also start new plants from leaf cuttings, found this out accidentally. They are a nice addition to any arrangement in a flower vase. When I went to trash the dead flowers, I discovered roots and little leaves at the very bottom of the stem. Definitely one of my favorite plants.

Not at all! ...u can upsize the pot ANY time just try to disturb the corms very little, take it out in one unit and increase the soil around that clump on the outsides... i’ve been growing them in every variety for over 30 years ....they like bright shade -not full sun - which is great for window sills if you don’t have south facing light... they will close up in full sun and the colour will bleach out.

I have two colors of them, purple and green. I leave mine in south facing window all year round. I have to water them everyday or the stems will wilt by mid morning. I give a little fertilizer every other month. The leaves are about twice the size of yours and the colors brighter. Try yours in more sun. I divide my big plants each year and give away dozens. Last spring I mixed greens and purples in the same pots. They look good together but the purples grow faster than the greens. instagram.com/p/CCoCfcgFKGf/ and instagram.com/p/CEXyxGVFYgF/ . I inherited one of these from a neighbor who was moving and couldn't take it along with her -- but recently it's losing a lot of the outer stems and leaves (full-on brown leaves, hanging down the side of its pot) whereas other stems and leaves still look good. I can't tell if it's dying or just going into dormancy...? I've been trying to cut back on watering it and it is facing a south window so it can get a lot of light but any tips would be appreciated! Hey! Could you please help me? I got my Oxalis Triangularis nearly 4-5 months ago and I've recently changed its pot. It was growing nice, tall, firm, and well in a very, very tiny teapot before I realized I needed to make a change (it was just too small of a space!) Now the leaves are spread all about, resting on the rim, and my green leaves aren't growing or turning purple! There hasn't been new growth in about a month It's cool and humid here in HK (16C/60F, 93% humidity, very typical of Hong Kong spring). It does face my east window but I've supplemented it with a light. I'm scared :( I've never actually watered it to the point that some water has trickled down the holes of the pot. I don't actually know if I'm watering it enough even when I reach 2 inches in with my finger. :( Is there anything I should take note of? What am I doing wrong?
