Of course, this is absurd. If I enjoy the song, the music, the poem, the theater production, the story, or the illustration, I almost always do so without knowing anything about its creator. Indeed, oftentimes, I am unaware of even his/her name. The argument that we cannot separate art from the artist requires withholding my opinion of ALL art until such time that I have fully educated myself of every aspect of its creator - his/her attitudes and behavior patterns involving all living things and at all stages of his/her life.Since I, and most people, have no intention of doing so, this separation is implied.

I strongly disagree that artwork can be considered interchangeable with the artist. People are complex beings, with many different sides to them. For most artists and creators, their artwork tends to concentrate on expression of a particular facet/theme/topic of significance, but that's not the same thing as being *completely representitive* of their entire character. For instance, Hayao Miyazaki's films often convey a child-like wonder and sense of adventure, but the director's own attitude is rather cynical and grumpy. Van Gogh's paintings are filled with vibrant hues and lively strokes, but we all know that he was very prone to despair and mental instability. And on the other side of the spectrum, we have people like Junji Ito, who creates twisted and disturbing work, but is himself a very meek and friendly individual. For all of these people, it would be terribly reductionist to assume that their artwork encapsulates the entirety of their character, and to judge them accordingly.

I’ve seen many people who are continuously debating on this topic The answer is very simple and it totally depends upon “who’s the reader” or “who’s the viewer” How you are reflects what you argument would be.

Can we separate art from the artist? No. Can we separate our appreciation art from moral judgments about the artist? That's not even a question. Of course we can, and we all do. 100% guarantee she makes apologies for artists she likes. To judge art by the morality of the artist leads to cultural impoverishment and self-delusion about one's own moral righteousness.

Jonathan Froger then it’s a good thing the world doesn’t refer to your (not so) irreproachable evaluation of somebody’s “intellectual and emotional capacity” :)

Jonathan Froger yes you’re typing a bit too fast for me to the point where it’s incomprehensible, any chance I can get a simpler response that my otherwise (relatively slow to process information) brain might be able to understand? Also, if you don’t mind me asking, why on earth are you referring to me as “white bread”?

Ok so what you are arguing is that you can not separate the art from the artist, I can easily separate a beautiful peace of music from the anti Semitic person who created it, if the music he created was also anti Semitic then I could not, I remember seeing a van goth before I knew about him I saw the same beauty and pain in his paintings both before and after knowing about him, any good artist should be able to make there work transcend themselves even as it is of themselves and in that transcends it separates itself from the artist. After all how many grate works are there that we know nothing about the artist?

Correct. Beauty exists above and outside of the vices of the human condition. We don't reduce the agency of the alcoholic artist if he produces beautiful pieces worthy of the old masters because his lifestyle is based on vice and escapism. Why should we make concessions or diminish the beauty of art if the person who created it was ugly in any way?

Nintendo made great games but is cruel and unfair towards consumers and fans Like fan made games that are clearly passion letters but get tormented like trash. Also have you guys seen the #FreeMelee and #FreeSplatoon trending? Because Nintendo cancelled their livestream for the upcoming finals of a Splatoon tournanent because they were calling out Nintendo for what they did to a smash bros tournament.

Isn't it weird that some people read Fareinhight 451 and thought we should make that dystopian future our reality? People are shit, everyone and everything thing is offensive if you try hard enough or if enough time passes. I don't think figurative book burning and banning is the best way to show moral superority. It rather regressive.

This was all over the place and and filled with fallacies. Idk what her thesis is except maybe "bad guys are bad." I do somewhat see the point of not wanting to give asshole artists money, but is totally failed to address the fact that most art has been made by people who are deceased.

Why didn't occur to anyone, given it is so clearly the solution? Geez, it's s good thing most of us are perfect, otherwise we wouldn't have anything worthy to enjoy.

This is such an inane discussion; since, ultimately, it's an individual choice. and, it can vary from artist to artist. I can only imagine, most Metoozers; must be slanted in a predictable way.
