Another fantastic meatloaf Tom. I'm right there with ya on the books over interweb, especially now where you just get overrun with ads and completely unrelated gibberish. I use (still kinda do) to read product brochures, magazines, technical books, stuff not even in my field, just because I always found it fascinating. I also appreciate that you, and a few others, don't ever ask for handouts or support in every single video, and because of this, I will buy some shirts. Thanks for the years of education, Smiley

Very cool and functional redesign of a draftsman’s lead holder. I have mine from high school drafting class in ‘75. We had to learn how to use those before we could advance to the 0.5 mm Pentel-type pencils! Still have one of those lead pointers that clamp to the edge of the drawing board. Love the old stuff.

I believe the Hultafors pencil is similar to the original Pica pencil who also make replacement lead and have Red and Yellow. The colored refills are great on dark surfaces and wood. I believe they also write well on oily surfaces.

The pencil is called a "marker for deep holes" over here, most likely because of the long thin metal tube that allows to poke the pencil in a fairly small hole. You can get extra lead in yellow, red and grey. These are great pencils for marking on steel for cutting and welding.

When the strob tachometer stablized through the camera, it was measuring the frame rate of the camera. The only way it would stop the fan blade would be for the fan and camera frame rate to match.

I have a thin rule and it is a General # 301 6" long. Nice idea. That is a nice instrument. I have a Robotak (as I recall) Strobe light that flashes at different rep rate and I used it with an angel on my shoulder to snap action wood spinning on my wood lathe as I ease a skew into the odd shaped chunk of wood. Maybe it needed an offset hole for a glass tray to sit. The fan blades are supposed to stop in the view. I also like the 'star' wheel on the back being curved for real time winding. Cool.

Thanks Tom, cool interments! I made my first indicator, I inherited a watch makers lathe ,a box of tools and brass everything some books about machining from my great uncle. The lathe was a unimat 300. The book was” the interdiction to a watch makes lathe.” The book had lots of pictures so for a kid it was great and all the projects built on each other. I soon realized the drill press in the pictures was my lathe in a different configuration. Thanks for sharing.

The tacho relies on aliasing between the instrument's wheel and the target (fan). In your filming setup you have aliasing interactions between the fan speed, the instrument speed, the lighting frequency (flicker) and the camera frame rate. It's an incredibly cool instrument that's very hard to demo on film. Thanks for sharing!

As others have pointed out, the camera frame rate is interacting with the shutter. Since your frame rate is probably 30Hz (actually 29.97) the shutter will appear to freeze at whole multiples and fractions of 1798RPM. If your fan has an induction motor, it will probably be spinning at 1800RPM (a little less due to the slippage required to generate torque: maybe 1750?). So they won't freeze at the same time. If you freeze one, the other will appear to be rotating about 48RPM assuming the guesses above are correct.

The fan is likely a split phase induction motor which ruins slightly less than sychronous speed which is why the blades are still in motion when you align with the camera running at 60 frames/ sec. You might try putting a fly cutter in the mill, adjusting the shutter, then varying the cutter speed around a multiple of 60 hz or 3600 rpm to slow how the optical tach is used. At exactly 3600 rpm, the cutter should freeze.

Hi Tom, Cool stuff in this serving of meatloaf. Pass the ketchup please! For those of you reading this and are intrigued by George Daniels, he is interesting story and if one loves history of mechanical stuff I recommend digging into the subject further. On You Tube there are a series of interviews with George telling his story. Roger Smith who was a student of Mr Daniels and was the inheritor of his studio has an excellent lecture on George Daniels. Roger also has a interesting You Tube, rmsmithwatches and some of the what I reference above is there. I am not a watch maker or particularly interested in it, However I am a machinist so therefore I am interested on the process and history of making things. I stumbled across Roger and by extension George several years ago while looking at You Tube. My guess nearly everyone watching this episode knows about Justin, Max and quite often Stefan and the Home Shop Machinists podcast. But if you have not heard of them it is good stuff for sure, very entertaining. Cheers all.

Tom, firstly thank you for another meatloaf! Years ago I worked on an old rotogravure press that used herringbone gears that were around 20" in diameter (from recollection). I remember being very impressed by them and not being able to figure out how the heck they made them. I asked an old timer who worked there and asked what they were (the machine used open gears, not the enclosed gearboxes of most the presses I worked on) and was told what they were called and that they were used to reduce backlash under running conditions. Not sure if that backlash thing is real and wonder if you have insight into that? FWIW, I *think* the Press was an English, Baker Perkins.

I'm curious if you've ever mentioned what's going on when a part with flats is spun in a variable speed lathe under florescent lighting and it shows a bluish and straw colored reflection on alternate flats. I'm sure it has something to do with 60 cycle power in the lights.

I think you measured the frame rate of the camera not the fan when you were filming it. The frame was lining up with the holes in the disk hence why the disc stopped spinning. I don't think you could get all three working together unless they were multiples of each others frequency.

It seems to me that the apparent rotation of the window at 20:00 is the result of the interaction between window and frame rate. I don't think that the indicated speed would correspond to that of the fan. Awesome instrument, though!
@83farmer
@83farmer 3 жыл бұрын
A lower-tech way to measure the speed of a rotating body is to use an old timing light (you all do have one somewhere right?), and a variable frequency function generator. Loop a wire through the pickup coil on the timing light to the source and return of the function generator. Aim the light at the rotating object and adjust the frequency of the function generator until the rotation freezes. You will then know the rotational frequency of the object (or a harmonic thereof)!
