In this mix of subjects we have some special guests visit the Ox tools shop to help me change a bunch of light bulbs. We take a look at some recent tool acquisitions and examine some viewer appreciation mail that showed up. Ever wonder what the difference between a friendly hammer and a mean hammer is? Well I give a visual explanation of the difference. In all that we find some time to do a cast iron welding job.

Cool Meatloaf Tom! I enjoyed watching three knuckleheads trying to hang a sign. Tom did a great job with the cut out. Lots of cool new tools this week. Looks like I better step up my hammer collection. Good tip on the floor cleaner. I'll have to check that out. Looks like it did a good job. I have a bunch of other Zep industrial cleaners I got for free from work. I think they are like the purple cleaner. Been wanting to try it on the machines as well. Thanks for the little shop tour. Cant wait to see the video on the new machine! Take care bud! Adam

Finally got to watch the second half of this meatloaf. Used to work for a helicopter company that hauled executives around. Had to try and keep the aircraft clean. Used a mild detergent of some sort on most of it, and WD-40 on the rotorhead. But the area where the engine exhaust blew onto the tail boom required ZEP. Strong enough to get the grunge off, but never took the paint off (poly urethane paint). But earlier, spent several years hanging around various airports. If you go to the hangars where the corporate jets are kept, you frequently see the pilots hanging around doing spot cleaning on their aircraft. Invariably they're using a spray bottle of 409. I used several bottles of 409 cleaning the 50 year old grunge off my Bridgeport when I got it.

Hey Tom, Thanks for the comment. I used to work for Clorox who makes 409. Brings back memories. The ZEP floor stripper is heavy duty compared to 409. Cheers, Tom

Hey Tom, Yes, meatloaf is always better the second day. Thanks for saving some! A few questions: Why would you want to saw off your Johnson? (Are you going into the vasectomy business?) Do the bad hammers hang around smoking funny stuff and littering the street with empty beer cans? I really like your sign! That guy really does some great work. Keith Fenner has done some similar stuff. Just for giggles, is that guy selling his lathe? (It's probably more than I can afford anyway!) Oh well . . . Regards, Dave

Thanks for Meatloaf 33, Tom. Great as usual. I will have to try out Zep on my next cleaning project. A while back we painted a large mill (11' diameter table) for our local water district. It was caked with years of cutting oil, chips etc. We ended up buying Purple Power degreaser (bio degradable) in 5 gallon pails (about $26 each) and used a small airless sprayer to apply it. We dropped the floor with 6 mil visqueen and taped it down with duct tape. We covered the cylinders, electrical parts and motor with visqueen.It worked great! After we were finished we mopped up the degreaser with a commerical mop and bucket. We then hand applied TSP to remove the degreaser residue. It makes fast work of a dirty job, especially on larger machines.

Yum, leftovers !!! I had a feeling something was missing from my day yesterday. I'll bet those metric gage pins get some use. I've been using the Zep Industrial Purple Degreaser and it cuts just the same as the floor stripper you used. May be the same product with a different label on the jug. It will strip the paint if you leave it on too long. I also wipe everything down with a wet cloth after to get any remaining purple stuff off and neutralize it somewhat.
@oxtoolco
@oxtoolco 10 жыл бұрын
This stuff looks like it might eat paint if you left it on too long. How much is the purple stuff per gallon? Sorry, I have forgotten your first name. Cheers, Tom
@gwcude
@gwcude 10 жыл бұрын
oxtoolco The Industrial Degreaser shows to be $10.48 per gallon at the Orange Borg's online store. They only show the Floor Stripper available by the case online at a price that works out to $8.96 per gallon. I'm sure they sell the floor stripper version in single gallons at their retail stores and will look for it next time I'm in there. Buck and a half a gallon savings sounds good, if it performs as well and from your video, it looks to work just as good. Gary

Tom, I am a Woodturner who is slowly (very slowly) adding some metal spinning and general machining to my skillset. The steel spinning tools are for spinning non-ferrous metals, copper, pewter, aluminum and such. The bronze tools are for spinning ferrous metals. That is a nice little collection. I am very intrigued by the trim tool, usually when you see those holes down the shaft they are for using it with a second bar where increased leverage is needed, but I have never seen a trim tool setup that way. Please let us know if you find any more information on them.

At last, something I can do that you can't, (well you could very easily if you tried) metal spinning. I learnt to do it so I could make a part for a old barometer I was restoring. You don't need a spinning lathe, I used my Graduate wood lathe, but you could probably use you centre lathe if you wanted to, give it a go before passing on your tooling. An over-joyed viewer chris

Tom, I think that when hanging something that close to an edge, square is more important than level. The eye is much better at noting a width difference than it is on angle differences. Eire way, it's a first class sign! Is the first mean hammer you showed named "Spike"? That quick release leg vise was neat! Never seen one like that before. Perfect for blacksmithing when you have your hands full of hot metal and hammers. Thanks for the video! -- Mike

Hey Mike, Well now you know why I put a level on it. Everybody has a keen eye and can see when something is off. I guess I'll have to mill the edge of that plywood plumb. Floor stripper, who knew? I like my antique machines to function as new, but I allow them the dignity to look their age. Visitors ask why is my WWII vintage lathe (and ONLY my lathe) shiny and painted like a ho'? Well she came to me grungy, and someone suggested a miracle motor cleaner called "OilEater." Indeed a miracle, the gunk slid right off; I went at it just like you and your Johnson. So happy that was done. But next day my floor is covered with grey dust, and the machine is butt necked iron!! Every bit of original Victory grey just flaked off and blew away overnight. No choice then but continue to "parade rest," as Fenner says, and repaint her. Never again. "Test In Inconspicuous Area" as they say.

I think the yellow hammer head is cellulose acetate, I think that Chuck's hammer is malleable iron (cast & cheap except for the heat treatment). The fitted box is definitely the work of a toolmaker. That's a nice set of metric pins, are the imports any good ? VPI paper isn't effective for ever, buy some camphor. Copper tools for spinning brass ? Great Sign ! Big Johnson Saw ? You're not sawing my big Johnson !

@oxtoolco
@oxtoolco 10 жыл бұрын
Hey Pierre, I've used stainless in a pinch on cast iron. It works sometimes depending on the cast iron condition. The pure nickel just lays in there nice. There is some edge erosion that can be hard to fill but for the most part it works great. Genitorial is the smell you get shortly after when you make that funny noise out the tailpipe. Janitorial is what I meant. Cheers, Tom

HI Tom, I was surprised when you preheated that casting while clamped to your super flat welding table. aren't you afraid it might be damaged by the heat? if i had that nice of a table, I would be afraid to take any chances that it could warp. nice job with the nickel rod though.

Hey Bill, That table would take a quite a bit more intense direct heating to mess with it. I agree its a nice table and I don't go out of my way to injure it. Its like a pickup truck or a pocket knife, meant to be used. Cast iron job came out pretty good. All the best, Tom

Hey Tom, how would you follow up after the degreaser? I am always worried about using products like that on my tools, I don't want rust later on. Because of that I have always stuck to using Kerosene or similar but it's so expensive and the smell and fumes don't make it a terribly pleasant job, I certainly wouldn't go around spraying it lol.

Nice one, Tom. Especially like the cast welding. I picked up some Ni99 recently myself and find it to be really quite nice. Nervous the first time I used it but once I saw a file cut through it like butter I was sold. Any idea what you pre-heated the piece too and did you do anything to slow cool it? I have a bunch of it to do on some more critical pieces in the near future and figure I better read and ask now while I can.

Hi Ryan, I heat cast iron until oil smokes on it. Probably around 400 degrees. After the welding I wrapped it in a fiberglass blanket and let it get below 150. You can pick up the temp sticks at the welding shop to help judge the temperature. Cheers, Tom

Hi Joey, Thanks for the comment and participation. The Zep was full strength. I would bet it would work nearly as good cut 50/50. Cheers, Tom

Probably should have done something simple like that when I made it. Now it has too much oil on it to paint properly. Oh well Its not bothering me anymore right up until I have to move the lathe. Cheers, Tom

Cool metal spinning tools! Terry Tynan is an expert metal-spinner, and he has some very well-done how-to DVDs on the art. Check out these samples www.metalspinningworkshop.com/MovieClipTwo.html I used to use Simple Green for cleaning but got turned on to Super-Clean by a friend who uses it to clean the grease out of his deep-fat fish fryer. The Super-Clean comes in a purple bottle and is available at WalMart and Pep Brothers Auto Supply, probably most other auto supply stores too. Haven't noticed it at HD or Lowes. I'd be interested to see how it compares to the floor cleaner stuff. Interesting stuff as always, Tom.

Hi David, I think its mating season. There are a couple of males that perch on the edge of the window and squawk their brains out. I got some mylar ribbon coming to see if that discourages them. Cheers, Tom
