Ozarchaic Bison Hunters: Calf Creek Archaeology at the Hudson Sites

In the late summer of 2015 I went to Northwest Arkansas to work on a pair of archaeological sites that are now known as the Hudson sites. This is a brief summary of what we learned by excavating there, focusing on the Ozarchaic Calf Creek component which ranges from central Texas to northern Missouri. I want to thank my field director Pritam Chowdhury for loaning me the "Calf Creek Horizon" book and the site reports for the Hudson sites.
Here's a link to the Calf Creek book. I'm sure you can get it cheaper elsewhere. I'm not an author on this book and I don't get a cut from sales, but the proceeds do go to the Native American Scholarship Fund.

I was on that project too! I'm not sure if we ever met; I'm standing on the left side of the photo, wearing a red shirt and a bandana. I got there only a few weeks before the project ended, and that was the only time I ever worked that far south. Thanks for sharing information about the site. You don't always get to hear the good stuff as a shovel bum.

Very interesting! I live in NW Arkansas, I’ve got several overhangs and caves creeks within walking distance from my residence. Also I’m close to kings river and Osage river. I’ve only found one calf creek point out of thousands of points. It was such a treasure. It was laying on a head height rock ledge that naturally descends to bottom of a 12-15’ waterfall,30-40 yards below a overhang. I’m sure the next hard rain would of washed the point of bluff into the small stream from waterfall. The majority of other types of points found on surface below this bluff overhang seems to be adena type points.

I grew up in and still live in the Eastern Ozarks of Missouri...I've never been lucky enough to find a Clovis point, but I've found numerous Haw points and similar points. Years ago, my sons found a really nice Snyder point in our backyard made of a greenish colored flint. An archeologist with MODOT looked at it and thought the flint may have come from eastern Kansas.

The "practice pieces" you showed reminded me of similar objects we found during an archaeology field class I took back in the summer of 1971 on a Fremont Anasazi site in southwestern Colorado. We had some fireside discussions about what they might be, and finally decided on that old standby "ritual objects." Your explanation makes more sense.

Thanks for the insight into the archeological process. I love learning about the ancient people you're studying but it's also really cool to see pictures and learn the story of the modern humans doing the legwork

Recent excavations of historic site just north of Spring Creek related to the highway project. Are you in agreement that the Bison migrated E to W as much as N to S and thus wintered in the Ozarks and followed the grass west to calving grounds? There is a "buffalo wallow" on the grounds of Smith Field in Siloam Springs. August in NWA - Humidity is our middle name.

Those notches are so deep already. It seems so risky to try to widen them. I see the scars widening to the center of the piece, but did they also widen it to the more delicate edge direction as well?

So what time period do you estimate that the Calf Creek era was? From What you were saying it seems like 3500 BC? I do a lot of work at Calf Creek Sites in Arkansas. Have you encountered any above average height skeletal remains at any of the sites that you have worked at?

Ive never seen a modern napper get those deep notches without using copper. What tools did the ancients use to make those? Oh youre talking about it now

What other points might be associated with the Calf Creek? I've seen tiny Big Sandy's (not sure what to call them) that share the same heat treated gray pink cherts. From the same sites.

It's usually a lifestyle issue. Not everyone likes the idea of moving from job to job and company to company for years and years. Once that happens your options are usually to get promoted into an administrative position or to find a new career.

@@NathanaelFosaaen why take something simple and easy to say and computer in the mind like inches, pounds, feet, yards, miles and make it a multi syllable, high number affair? Its way easier to be 6 foot tall than it is to be 182.88 cm tall. Thank god jefferson kept that jazz from being adopted in america. Thank god when i call for lumber or concrete its still feet and yards. I dont understand american youtube channels that use the metric system when 90% of their watchers are americans. I say it like this, there are two kinds of countries in the world, those that use the metric system and those that sent 24 men to the moon. Those with a 2 trillion gdp and those with a 20 trillion gdp. Now yes i know most industry and govment use the metric system america, but still, this country was built by feet, pounds and yards and it works very well for americans in everyday life.
