Great honest review! A lot of people complain about the size of this tent, and i guess its a personal point of view. For me, I've always went down the path of comfort and have spoil my family with big and heavy tents. ie. I bought a Zempire Pro 2 Air tent, that thing weighs in at like 42-45KGs and the best compact size i can get it to is about the size of a wheel barrow (Stack of 6 x 18-19" tyres). When I load it in the back of my truck, it takes 1/4 of the tub space! So you could imagine my love for this tent when i was told it was only 22kg and about 2meters tall.... its an absolute space saver in my case. Sure it has about 1/10th of the feature that i can get with the Zempire, it only has 1 room vs like 3 on the zempire, single layer instead of dual etc etc... But again, this is more for a nomadic experience where a quick set/pack and go is vital. For times when I just want a simple and pain free experience, I will take my RV3 plus... but for times when my entire family comes with me, I will always bring the Zempire mobile home :D Stay safe and keep up the good work!

Good honest review. Totally agree with your conclusion. I have the RV-5 (a bit bigger again) and in my opinion, it's one of the best - if not the best - quick set-up and pack-up ground tent in the market. They don't call it the "30 second tent" for nothing. Another benefit it has, I have a Rhino-Rack Batwing on my 80 Series Landcruiser, the front awning of the RV-3/5 connects (zips) to the Batwing, making for a large sheltered area between my vehicle and tent. But just like you, I too found the home storage and on the road hauling a little challenging, so I only use my RV-5 when our trip involves setting up a base camp to stay at for few days. Thus reserving our special spot, while out exploring the surrounding area during the day. Otherwise, if our journey is more "road trip" style - where we generally only stay overnight at each spot, then I use my roof top tent. I have a "Wild Lands" RTT. It's a side opening clam shell style slim tent (only 16cm high when packed & only weighs 55kg). The RTT also has roof rails (that can support a dynamic weight of 100kg ) - meaning I can still keep my 160W solar panel and Maxtrax on top of my rig.

I've had this tent for the last 3 years and it's held up great. Have taken it all over UT, CO, TN, NC. Of all the tents I've owned, including ground and roof top tents, it's my favorite. Ease of setup, durability, and space. You won't find a more comfortable tent. My complaints are the same you echoed. It's big, heavy, and a bear to store. I also wish there were more interior pockets for cellphones, personal items, and such. Also it can be a bit difficult to pack away and fit back into the bag. You really gotta position it right and have a helper squeeze as you zip it tight. Drifta makes a replacement bag for them that makes it a bit easier to store but that's $$$ due to importing it from AU. So yes it's true, it's very fast to setup and is a 30 second tent but some of that is mitigated by its size along with the need of 2 people to lift it down/up and with packing it away. If you can deal with some of the inherent downfalls it makes for a great tent that you'll have for years to come.

OZ Tent make great products, they're affiliated with Rhino Rack. I've had their Fox Wing 270 degree awning for about five years and has withstood some pretty highlands and heavy rain, you can actually attach this RV3 tent to the Fox Wing awning. Great honest review.

A quality product very well reviewed. As far as "above the treeline" camping in strong wind: Yes, I totally agree, use a more streamline tent would suit better. "Horses for courses". You cant have the cake and eat it too. The Oztent tall enough to stand upright in = not so streamline in very windy conditions. Like with surfing, you use the board / equipment to suit the conditions. It is worthwhile to have a couple of tent options. Thanks for your honest and very comprehensive review. Cheers.

They are awsome tents. There are a number of additional bits you can get so you can make it even better. You can actually connect two tents together face to face making a room in between. Or, you can connect the tent to your vehicle with the fly. NOT cheap, but you get what you pay for. Good review!

I've had the RV-2 for a while, regarding: - storm-proofness: I've experienced a few storms with strong winds with it, the worst one in the middle of a tiny island on a big lake, exposed 360, with gusts at least 70km/h, it always held perfectly even though it does catch some wind. - regarding carrying it on any vehicle, I got myself a cheap second hand Thule long roof box, it's just perfect you can just throw the tent in there, lock it away from sight, and not worry about having it stolen from your roof rack. I got a roof top tent and I still carry this one strapped on top of the RTT on the 4R when going camping with 4-5 people, or when I go camping with my economy car (little Vibe) that has no RTT (but the box).

Just got back from a week camping and our Coleman tent didn’t hold up very well in the windy conditions, so looking at getting something like an Oztent RV3. What are your thoughts on these in the wind? Do they go well in the wind (less flapping and banging than a normal nylon tent?) Cheers guys
@WanderlostOverland
@WanderlostOverland 3 жыл бұрын
The frame is pretty rigid and the rest of the tent is really well made. It does have the vertical sides and the awning that catches the wind. The tent itself doesn't flap much and the awning and back window flap can be made to be tight and quiet too.

So I was looking at this tent a couple yrs ago or so but the price kept me from pulling the trigger. Then I heard oz tent had pulled out of the USA due to poor sales so i moved on. I was then made aware of another company making similar style tents here in US. Overland Pros is their name and pricing on their tents were in the $500 ball park. Well again I just couldn't do it so I settled with a Gazelle and I'm happy with my purchase. It sets up just as quickly as the oz tent so that is very satisfying.

To clear up any confusion I don't think this is true at all. I've not heard of any rumors about Oztent pulling out of the US. I bought mine about 3 years ago from one of their US retailers.
