Yeah it's fun to have 1000hp but the reality is that P-Plate drivers are only allowed to drive certain cars, and this varies from state to state. In Victoria both these FG Falcons are P-Plate legal. Would you pick the XR6 or the Ecoboost? We thought this was an interesting match up.

If it's a P players car. That ecoboost looks (and no doubt sounds) completely stock. Whereas a copper is probs more likely to notice an exhaust note and then the headers on the Barra. But yeah I'd still tale the ecoboost as a daily. Already got a turbo Barra. Something different be good. Apparently those ecoboost Falcon's better than the sixes.

Id have the 6. I had a fg 4.0 and it felt unbeatable lol. The power delivery of the motor was in one word reassurance somthing i stil miss 1 year after selling it.

The unfortunate part for the ecoboost is the transmission is designed for light duty. It's like this for fuel economy reasons and won't survive with the extra torque once the ecoboost is tuned. Stick with the 6, cheaper, more plentiful, can tow heavier loads because of the stronger trans, cheaper to modify, more ultimate potential, sounds better etc. The only benefit from the ecoboost is cheaper rego and less weight over the front end.

@@aaronkingsley3035 they probably used a mix of both considering the stock outputs could be handled by each one. 450nm for the 21 and 600nm for the 26. The 21 is much lighter and had modification focused on economy. They don't last like the btr 4 speed and need more attention in the cooling department. I'm feeling the ecoboost is going to lunch that auto in the hands of a heavy falcon and its P plate driver.

When they first came out knew someone that had one as a rep vehicle, he was quite impressed. Not sure if you could expect the same longterm longevity from it though.

New en urbo engines have pretty much no lag these days. Same goes with the Ecoboost falcon.

I'd put my money on an SIDI SV6 Crumpledoor. With a decent exhaust they sound badass. In orange with black highlights and the right wheels they sound it too

Purely because I've worked on the sixes for years, I'd stick what I know to be one of the most reliable petrol engines. The ecoboost in the falcon may very well be reliable, but I never had one drive into my workshop to form an opinion on them.pretty rare

The eco boost has all the get up and go, and cruising it would run on the smell of an oily rag. I reckon the eco will win on the strip just due to low down torque

Higgo, the FG Falcon “eco” I prefer, is the brilliant EcoLPI Barra six, with the ZF 6HP26 transmission. 🚙

I had a 4 cyl turbo commodore hire car in NZ. Very impressive. I think I saw 240kph but I can't be sure for legal reasons...probably more like 100kph. The dash rattled louder than the stereo at full noise. I'd take the Ford.

I believe the Ecoboost Falcons run a lighter version of the ZF 6 speed. This is the reason for the reduced tow capacity. I would take the 4 litre to get the stronger auto.

I have a FGX Ecoboost with a Process West IC, GFB BOV, Mid Muff delete, hot dog & tune. 180.5 kw & 530 nms. Total cost $5K. What isn't mentioned is the purchase price with FGX Ecoboost available with low kms for $15K. Sounds great if you are into 4 cylinders, better than a taxi Barra engine. One FGX currently for sale with ~ 150K kms for $9,800. Bargain. As for fuel economy, to go 'x' hard needs the same fuel amount for both, marginally more for 6. Drive slow expect 9 litres -100 km. With Ecoboost you can have one but not the other 😃 Something different !

I have a 2015 ex cop FGX NA, very quick off the lights( don't know if its 100% standard) great fuel economy, plenty of torque, best choice for me

@@npx20 cars don't sweat, they either do it or they don't. I've towed a 1,500 kg car on a trailer with mine without it 'sweating'. My only worry was the brakes weren't confidence inspiring. I usually put some valium in the fuel tank when I think it'll be 'highly strung' 🤣

About to begin modding my BF MkII Fairmont Ghia. Mod list will be as follows: PH4495 Heads MRC High Flow Cat MRC 2.5" Catback 3:73 Diff Gears SS Inductions Growler Kit BP Cams & Valve Springs ZF6 Hi Stall with Tune 255lph Pump Tuned on 98 Octane Sub 220rwkw perhaps? Thinking about using the FG Turbo Intake manifold.

Neat comparison for those tossing up between these two cars. Didnt realise you could squeeze that much more out of the ecoboost. Id say the ecoboost would pull away from the barra.

I had a similar choice to make when buying an Audi A5 once. I drove the naturally aspirated V6 and the turbo 2.0 4 cylinder and the torque of the turbo engine gave it a much better midrange. So I bought the 2.0 but I normally prefer na. I have a naturally aspirated V8 now so best of both worlds.

I used to drive every single FG falcon daily (I sold brand new FPVs and FG Mk2s at a ford dealership for a year in my early 20s - dont do it, shit job). And we were always amazed at the little ecoboost falcon, it felt quicker then an N/A FG except on the run....and it was the main demo car we used to run up and get lunch etc. as it sat in the yard for the entire year because no one outside of fleet sales was interested in the thing

We took the Older Brother model ( BF Fairmont with the 6 speed auto) and added a FG plastic manifold and headers plus F6 exhaust and ran it on E85.......made 200rwkw and ran a 13.7@102mph !! And it's CHEAP !!

@@bigsohc Do you mean the plastic FG LPI manifold with the liquid gas injectors ?? The lpi motors make 195kw compared to the BA/F 157kw......but completley different setup as the injectors have an lpi pump and spray liquid lpg instead of vapour through throttlebody like the BA/F. Am however trying something with a BF lpg wagon atm.....will let you know if it works out :)

@@STREETMACHINETV about 5K is my guess, thats headers full exhaust and otr and tune and dyno, its about 1K for every 10Kw gain approx and also depends on who does it and what products are used, like branding of headers exhaust etc etc, also intercooler from a XR6 turbo on a eco boost, hum is it new or 2nd hand as well, sure save a lot by using 2nd hand stuff, at least 2/3rds cost easy. :)

Meh, Barra for the Win. I cant see the Ecoboost having anywhere near the longevity of the Barra and much fun as the Ecoboost is its still working way harder hauling around the Falcon. That and I have this nagging Starfire 4 VB Commodore image stuck in my head and we all know how THAT went.

Kinda like when Ford decided that a 3.2L 6 was a great economy option for the new EA Falcon.... Revved too hard and burnt more fuel then the 3.9 did in normal driving. Swiftly dropped after 9months of production haha

Comparing modern turbo 4's to the starfire is a lowblow. It would be like comparing an LSA to a stock cam 350 chev. Durability is not strictly related to engine size divided by vehicle weight. Cooling system revisions, oiling revisions, modern oil, bearing journal width, bearing journal diameter, rpm, fuel quality, fuel type, fuel cleanliness, and usage conditions are all factors in engine longevity. The singlecam 6 outliving the Windsors in the AU is proof of this. As long as its not abused, and somewhat regularly serviced, I see no issue in the ecoboost. Its a well designed motor

@Giga Shrubbz the ecoboosts will never last amy where near as long as a barra. Small displacement engine being forced with huge amounts of air from a turbo and coupled with direct injection means it aint gonna be getting anywhere near a million kms like a barra.

If I was a p plater I'd be into the xr6 leave it mechanically stock get the look right for what I was into also start to buy turbo parts manifold injectors turbz ect then when the restriction is over it's not a hard conversion to turbo there's the power and looks sorted also when I was a p plater money was a massive issue so buying parts overtime would allow you to save for better parts just my 2c

As a P plater today I’d go the ecoboost: fatter torque for better driveability, more discreet and the money saved from petrol would go towards the next set of wheels. Would love to know how they go down the 1/4.

I would take the ecoboost, a nice set of wheels, leave it stock then put in a worked barra turbo I saved my money on. Edit: Plus it's always nice to have a spare engine.

​@@snowboxesful the head Ford Engineer for the FG said the NA can make 198 KW and 409 NM with 95 Octane and even more on 98 Octane. The NA with the 6 SP ZF are 6 speed manual is a decent performer. Change the diff ratios on the FG 6 and you have a decent boat. Quarter mile will be low 14s with good tyres if you have shorter diff gears - a 3.23 is more than enough on the ZF.

If the trans can handle it an ecoboost everyday. You look at what the Euros have done to the ecoboost 2.0L output wise, and the Americans (in a rwd chassis). The Aussie ECU is unique but if it can be cracked it can definitely handle some decent power with basic mods. For me though, is the lack of weight over the front end would make it a very fun vehicle to drive as a daily, compared to a much more nose heavier Barra.

4cyl if i'm honest. You will get the hectic Turbo sounds on your p plates and the girls wont have any clue but it makes sneezing noises so it's "cool" you only attract males with an n/a barra

ChrisHallett83, speak for yourself. Have you tried an EcoLPI Barra six powered car? They have high BMEP all the time, unlike a turbocharged car. Running only on LPG, the engines stay clean on the inside too ... 🚙

Leonard, the easy way for us old fellas is this. Whatever KW it is, add a 1/3 for hp. If you want to tell your hp in KW, take a 1/4 off. 👍

If nothing else, the eco boost would be faster, as it's not having to carry around the cast iron 6. Would be especially evident if taken to a circuit or hill sprint. Cool test. Amazing how similar they are.

Because cops pick on P platers ALOT I'd go with the less in your face G6 over the XR6, just to try and stay under the radar a bit more. Also its only for a few years untill you get your full license and then just buy an XR6 Turbo. Plus the Ecoboost falcon is the faster one in the corners with a lighter motor in the front lol and possibly faster in a straight line too.

I have got a ecoboost and have done a bit to it and it's running about 197rwkw and it goes heaps harder then the na6 with similar mods.

The ecoboost is slightly slower in stock form cos its down 3 or 4 kws on the power/weight ratios. But tuning an NA is incomparable to a turbo. Bang for buck in turbos are insane. But then again the ecoboost has the shit chinese ZF rip not the proper german one.

what are they like reliability wise? would imagine something that goes 800,000kms as a taxi be a lot more forgiving.. then again, how do they both go when thrashed daily also i'd consider the 4cyl if it sounded better than the 6.. like fullboost always mention, the barra exhaust note isn't really appealing to many

Only problem I see is that the na 6 is now no longer p plate legal with the extractors and that gives the ecoboost an automatic win

Was the xr6 on gas? Before the eco lpi came in? Or was that the petrol. If it is the petrol that is very surprising. Meant to be 195kw

I know you are in VIC, but in NSW, as soon as you do ANY changes / mods to a "P-plate legal" turbo, that car is no longer P-plate legal. What is the fine-print in VIC I wonder...?

Yeah same. Your not allowed to make performance upgrades at all. It’s 3 points and a few hundred bucks for p plater. I’ve only ever heard of people getting booked with it when they have been already caught speeding or racing on the street, they just use it as another couple of points to make sure you lose your licence

As soon as they get pulled over, extractors aren't legal for a P plater. EcoBoost will get away with looking stock for the most part

@@lyndongordon2518 in Victoria it is against the law for a P plater to put extractors on the vehicle. The regulations came in a bit after I had my full licence. Something about making the vehicle too powerful for an inexperienced driver

Twin 2 1/2 seems a little excessive thats Good for 500 hp hows the torque probably very doughy off the line ???. 2" 160hp 2.25" 200hp 2.5" 250hp 3.0" 400hp

That is 110% correct. For a n/a motor I think its too big. A stock twin fg turbo exhaust will provide better flow and will not reduce the torque output.

Amazed that Vic allows turbos for Ps. NSW allows some turbos for fuel economy reasons but set an absolute pwr/weight ratio at 130kW/tonne. For a 1700kg car, that's 221kW/296HP, which in my not so damn humble opinion is far too much power for an inexperienced driver.

I would have liked to see an EcoLPI tuned up.. it's already faster than any of the standard models so it would have been interesting to see if it can be pushed harder.

State side they're pretty common. At least the engines. We have several Ecoboost engines. 1.6, 2.0, 2.3 (i4) 2.7, 3.5 and supposedly a 3.3 v6. The last one I'm not sure of. But the v6s are not all that common outside pretend SUVs or the f150

Mmmmmm, ive never really considered the EcoBoost, but for P Platers i guess its another option. I have owned both NA and Turbo Barras and love them. I know that the lazy low revving NA Barra is good for hundreds of thousands of Taxi Km's, but i wonder how much longevity a wound up 2000cc would have in the big heavy falcon. Will be interesting to see the drag race. Im guessing the EcoBoost is a light engine? Good for handling, certainly better than the Barra. Perhaps a proper winding roadtest as well as the usual aussie bogan 1/4 mile 😉

For my money I would have the 6cyl Barra. A 4cyl will always have it's limits and like most will be buggered by 100.000 Kms. My old 2008 FG Barra had 250.000 Kms on it when I sold it and it was still punching power like it was brand new. Lets see an Eco-boost do that.

Bit of a shame Ford Australia didn't market them better, maybe a Falcon ST (basically an ecoboost/ XR6 parts bin special ) would have helped. Sadly it's all academic now....

Some maybe impressed by the ecoboost output figures however they need to remember it's forced induction. The stock Barra is naturally aspirated and making basically the same power. Yes the ecoboost is impressive although the P plater will more then likely start searching more power that can only safely be achieved by the Barra. I would be taking the Barra for reliability reasons for a first car

The Ecoboost is pretty tough. There was a Ford mini f1 with the 1.0, made nearly 300hp. The 4 can make power. For how long remains the question

I would go for the XR6 because after you finish your P's you can turbo it I doubt you can do that with the ecoboost

That na xr6 is running low, they come stock 195kw even with mods thats running only 180 at the wheels, which is low as. I have stage 3 air intake, full exhaust system, pacemaker extractors, upgraded pully system, tune, and i got 246kw at the engine which is like 220 at the wheels.
