To make sure our Mazda's new Barra engine has a chance of living its best life we pulled it down and gave it valve springs, head studs, a head gasket and oil pump gears. Here's how we did it.

buy an impact screw driver . rbs have the same issue with getting the oil pump apart or if you have a welder handy just weld a nut to the screw

Yeah get an impact driver, Soft jaws for the vice, Don't lift the cams on an angle to get the caps off. Oh and most gas engines are clean inside because well they run on gas. Love this channel.

Yep, despite what the old boys taught in shop class, you’re less likely to break old rusty or stuck bolts a with an adjustable impact driver than doing it by hand.

I use a big screw driver put as much down pressure and twist as i can then smack it on the top with a hammer it works well enough

After driving in/out over 5000 screws I learnt the power drill (impact or not) will strip way less heads. Keep the drill at 1 speed and while under power rotate the drill back and forth 2° repeatedly to keep the Phillips seated (they slowly auto disengage after about 5 revs}

I hate those Phillips screws too, a lot of brake disc retaining screws are the same and are rusted in. I use an old fashioned impact driver to get them started, but can be too aggressive on precision light alloy parts. I keep a selection of cobalt reverse spiral drill bits just for these kinds of situations. It should be noted that oil pump gears are precision ground/lapped and should not be separated as the inner and outer gears must remain in the same relative rotation.

Petroleum jelly for the pump gears as it dissolves far quicker than bearing grease. I'd use the battery impact gun with getting the screws out, allows you more downward pressure and high impact force on those awesome screws. Good donk these ford sixes.

Great vid Scotty. Loving the Barra Build. A great tool to use for those oil pump screws is an impact screwdriver. You hit the end with a hammer and it turns the screw as you hit it. I use these on old motorcycle engine case screws and nothing else works. They cost about $20 from Amazon.

Good job, thanx for letting people know about the compressed air embolism issue, it drives me crazy when I see people blow them selves off with compressed air, not only the embolisms but all the grease and dirt on your skin can get pushed through the skin into your blood stream, or pores, not good either way

scotty your knowledge on the barras is awesome .enjoying all the carnage videos and builds .....they are one of my favorite engines.....ford has produced .....i own about twenty barras ....passoniate owner of ba s and bfs ...also replacing timming chains at present on my ba xr8 finding the job a bit of challange has all its rewards in the end

Hey mate, I’m an Australian mechanic working in Europe. With the rust and the torx I learnt to use a 3/8 ratchet in those situations because it gives a better feel and use Hazet tin coated torx bits. Using a hand impact driver like snap on PIT120 or KOKEN attack drive can help but I just get a punch the same diameter of the torx and hit it with hammer to jar the torx so it loosens.

Hello from the states! Love your videos Scotty! Very well done, fun and informative. I've learned quite a bit about the barra from watching you. I dealt with the same issue on my oil pump bolts. The same exact ones too. Its strange. I still wonder why they designed them a philips head screw. Lol

hey Scotty and team. I know it's all time and money but I'd love to see a series of episodes with the engineering of a car. for example the black AU xr6. convert to auto, put on a full exhaust, have it engineered and regod, then compete in drag challenge. would be nice to see the in and out of engineering to make it all street legal. keep up the good work mate. love the carnage series!

Great show; many thanks for the episode on The Mighty Barra (VROOM)!!! Excellent production quality, well miked & photographed, very clear explanations of your building process. My first episode, now I'm hooked. Looking forward to more shows, particularly how to reuse a dead 1997-98 Subaru Outback 5 speed wagon (USA) with either a replacement JDM EJ257 STI motor, diffs, ecu, etc or anything else that will fit for possible JeepAru Dirtmobile or drag car. Aussies rule mate!

when describing springs.... closed/open and what measurement at open. For example, you can have 95# closed springs and #400 open or 95/150 or whatever... the final number we need is distance to coil bind.... thanks. Not trying to be a know-it-all, just sharing tips that helped me. Heat is your friend at getting stuck or loc-tite'd screws out. Failing that, weld a nut through the center to the screw, count to 10, then twist out for the win (basically using heat and attaching a removal tool all at once). The other thing, take your brass hammer, a solid tap (almost a hit) on the protected stem of the valve will guarantee your valve won't drop because one of those infernal valve retainers didn't hold (do NOT ask me how I know about that... IIRC, it cost me a new, expensive motor). love the show, keep up the great entertainment.

For those tricky tight screws, tap the driver bit into the screw with a light hammer, then use an impact driver with adjustable power (I use my little Dewalt on middle setting) 1980’s landcruiser water pump screws are similar and can be a pain.

Good quality impact screwdriver for removing the oil pump plate. I also prime the pump with a little Vaseline as it assists with quick oil pick up but then breaks down in the hot oil rather than possibly blocking any of the finer oil galleries. Keep up the good programming

Number 3 bit and an impact driver for the oil pump gears works well. Lots of pressure (I layed it on ground and put body weight on it). I messed up and used a number 2 for one of my first screws. Stripped the hell out of it. Cut a slit in it and used a flat head bit in the impact driver lol. Reinstalled it same way also with botched screw reinstalled. Figured its an impossible screw to find.

Impact driver to open the Oil Pump works a LOT better matey. The old school type with a mallet.

14:57 it's a year on so a bit late now, but for everyone else usuing this tool, make sure the 2 spacer blocks on top of the tool are underneath it. It makes everything line up and can get the new spring in without fighting it. It is on the wrong side here. Dominator had a batch of tools go out the wrong way round. There a great company with awesome products. Cheers

Quick question. For a 500hp application you would need oil pump gears, valve springs, headstuds but would you also need the billet backing plate and any other goodies?

Hi Scott. Use vassoline in the oil pump not grease as the grease tends to stick around and burn as the vasso melts and disperses in the oil when it has done its job.

That has to be the most cumbersome valve spring tool I have ever laid eyes on. Wouldn't catch me dead using it.

Have you ever done valve springs in a Barra? The tool is designed to change the springs while still on the engine. The pros can do it in around an hour or so, in the car.

@@STREETMACHINETV have assembled literally hundreds if not thousands of heads. I used to work for Superformance in the 80's / 90's. Can see that tool galling the valve stem very very easily. Have changed springs on cars as well, I just don't like the design of the tool. For $150 (I looked it up yesterday) you could put together a proper head bench yourself that does all kinds of heads.

Hay Scotty great job. I have a 2009 fg falcon straight lpg car and it is a silver top engine. Do they have the stronger rods ? or is it only the green top engines

Ford discontinued the green colour on the LPG E-Gas engine during the FG range but they have the good rods still

Little trick I use for striped philips heads is put some valve grinding paste into it and it will come out

The oil pump screws are meant to be impact screwdriver out and in there is a special screwdriver for that that you whack and they come out they are not in tight they just need a good knock loose a impact driver is usually enough to get the job done just gotta be careful to not strip the head thats why there is a special screwdriver you can hit but its not so necessary its the whacking motion that loosens the screw

make sure you use feeler gauges to center the pump over the crank snout. Best to install it when the engine is vertical so that the crank is centered in the block.

Scotty, ring gaps! Should have done ring gaps buddy. I even gave mine a hone and new rings, even though it had slight hone marks from new.

Barra's are like the industrial non diesel inline 6 engine that is only unreliable if you know next to nothing about servicing. Ford Australia pretty much threw the whole party itself at the engine so its an all rounder. gotta love the Barra.

This is the series I've been waiting on.ive got a ba2 xr6t 6spd manual,I've got almost all my parts ready for a engine build,manley pistons and rods,git a girdle and arp main studs head studs and a bunch of atomic stuff.i can get permaseal mls gaskets easy,but should I try to find cometic

If you damage a screw head you can usually fix it by flattening the top with a punch the tapping the screwdriver in to reshape the top. You can avoid damaging tight screws by giving them a tap with a hammer and a punch or using a screwdriver with a metal end through the handle instead of a punch. Don't hit too hard on screws that are in aluminum parts.

@@STREETMACHINETV you can do that too. But not everyone has an impact driver so I didn't add it. You can use just a screwdriver with a metal end by turning it in the direction you want and tapping the end with a hammer. I always do that when taking out the screw that holds brake discs and drums to hubs.

With those oil pump screws .I'm thinking you shouldve popped them using two people one using a spanner on the bit while being on the bit with a 8 mll scanner .

Hey Scotty & Co. When replacing the Barra Lifters, Should the Roller Rocker be replaced in the original position Ie: Following the same Cam Lobe Wear Pattern. OR doesn't matter if you throw them in a parts cleaner & reinstall anywhere with new lifters?? Cheers

What gearbox goes with this motor? I'm from South Africa? Any possibility of having one shipped here?

They had various transmissions available over the years. 4, 5 and 6-speed autos and 5 & 6 speed manuals

if you don't have an impact screw driver, in a pinch use a good tang through screw driver and hit it with a knock-omiter while turning

How bad do the cam bearings have to get before you throw away the head?

There are no bearings, the cams sit straight into the head. I haven't had to throw one away yet.

those bolts that were stuffed up were better undone with an impact driver and ball pein hammer

Loved the video but please explain more. Little things us lamer people don't understand, clearly it's child's play to you but I need more step by step guide as putting head Studds and valve springs is something i really want to do but scared I'll never get it back together without having to pay someone

Don't green tops have much higher compression for LPG? How does that work with boost because I didn't see any changing of pistons.

To what boost? I ask because I have a Egas motor from an FG and I was gonna swap the pistons to lower the compression. I'm actually running JTG liquid gas injection so less likely to detonate anyway but still worry about it.

Have you got any tips for tuning for high boost on LPG? I'm using liquid gas injection which doesn't use converters and is more efficient and cooling than vapour but I'm betting you have some lessons to give on the subject and I've never seen much info on it. (My car also has a Haltech elite powering it. ). Basically I'm interested in knowing how the gas tuning differs from premium 98 or e85 from an ignition perspective. I'd love to see your VE and advance tables or hear you speak of them sir. Nobody really covers that stuff with LPG and I think it'd be useful to people if someone did.

You should have used an impact driver to loosen & tighten the oil pump screws this way you don't destroy the heads
