Pabst Mansion

11 жыл бұрын

The Pabst Mansion was built by the famous Milwaukee beer baron Captain Frederick Pabst. As owner of the Pabst Brewing Company, Frederick Pabst made Pabst Blue Ribbon beer a household name. The Captain's home is he last surviving Gilded Age mansion from Milwaukee's Grand Avenue which was once lined with over 70 estates. The Pabst Mansion is now open year around for public tours.

My home is from 1883 and we love it. It's furnished with antiques from that era as well with over 20 tiffany lamps and fixtures. A good source for hardware is Crown City Hardware, Bradbury Bradbury Wall Paper, Decorators Supply for plaster medallions and trim.

My grandfather was chief executive accountant for Pabst Blue ribbon from 1936 to 1971.. worked directly with the Pabst family.. it was an incredible time a much happier time how much more productive time until Grandpa retired in 1971 miss those days of all the free beer we wanted directly off the plant Palace all we had to do was flash an ID card and we could take away cases of cans cases of bottles quarter barrels and half barrels on a weekly basis this began in 1958 and was stopped because of greed by those who were given this privilege in the summer of 1970.. it was a grand old time

@Pati...That almost happened to the Stephen Hopkins house, first chancellor of Brown University and signatory to the Declaration of Independence until the Society of Colonial Dames intervened and moved the property to Benefit Street in Proviidence, R.I., at the foot of Brown University. Interesting that as I walked through the house's slave quarters I had to stoop as I did aboard the Constitution in Boston.

One of our local large companies here bought a historic mansion written into the contract that could not be demolished. So they "accidentally" tore down the 3 story mansion claiming it to be mistaken for the small carriage house. BTW they did this in pitch dark without lighting, sounds pretty normal and safe huh.

@@cardinaloflannagancr8929The same happened to the Plankinton Mansion - up the street from the Pabst. Marquette University tore it down in the middle of the night while protesters were sleeping.

This is very encouraging. Here in Victoria, we have a mansion referred to as Craigdarroch Castle, and an elegant manor known asPoint Ellice house. Point Ellice house was actually abandoned by a Scottish businessman and his family. Everything left. A true success for an abandoned building. Different: all one floor, but very large, and a huge attic area. I helped re-insulate it. Best of all things in that house. Silk draperies with patterns in gold thread. Incredible stuff. Craigdarroch is equally impressive, on a larger scale. A billiard room about 30`x40' for example. There are also many houses deemed heritage houses located throughout the city. I wouldn't want to go anywhere. More of these buildings should be preserved, as beauty is ageless. :-)

omg! what a beautiful and truly grand home! I love beautiful old places like this. I didn't come from a wealthy family, but if I ever came in to a fortune of my own this would be the type of home I would love to have. they just don't build houses like this anymore, all of the beautiful wood and the ceilings, the Victorian era furnishings, and even the wallpaper is the best materials of that time. it would be truly awesome to wake up every morning with the sun coming through one of those huge windows and feeling like you were living in a time long ago. :-)

@Mr. McCarrell...They're not built because the cost would be prohibitive. These glorious mansions were built in the days of very cheap labor. If you haven't visited California and if plan to, may I respectfully recommend the Huntington mansion at San Marino, Bellosguardo mansion in Santa Barbara (the life of Huegette Clark was well chronicled by Bill Dedman, New York Times) and the Carson mansion at Eureka, Ca. I don't know whether the tombs of both Henry Huntington and his wife Arabella are still on the grounds of the Huntnigton Library. But if they are, they represent another facet of the grandeur of the times. Don't waste your time visiting the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose. The lady who owned it was bonkers.

I was always astonished by the way in which Americans love and admire european cities and architecture knowing just how many of their own incredible architecture they demolished, from Penn Station to much of Detroit to some of the finest mansions and 'cottages' ever built on a scale you only see in America. Take the Chicago Columbian ' White City' and its wonders ,,,, There are a great many buildings just lying rotting all over America and Don't get me started on their Southern mansions and their simple homesteads, all rotting whilst skyscrapers go up and down all over for multi millions.

It would give the owners and the community and again gives the home, back on 10 bests Mansions in America. Just an idea but wouldn't you like to see it and spend the night. The fact this Mansion wasnt torn down, robbed, and left to rot. That would be the first owner looking after it all these years.
