Mike, you have seriously helped me understand evo motor, and even more so you have given me a perfect idea of how many specialty tools I'm going to end up with for rebuilding my 97 S&S113 Evo. There are a few you've shown that Ill be able to improvise, but unless I find a motorcycle shop around me to rent from, I'll likely spend just as much on tools as i do engine parts. Thank you

Thank You. I saw the pilot from the series. My uncle and I watched it. I was deeply affected too. I had a couple of rather wild Harleys after that. But in 1978, I bought a 1977 FLH brand new. You are very welcome Mike and it's Adam. KZfaq needs a good detailed video of a TC 88B motor upgraded to the 96 with all the goodies in the cam chest including replacing the chain with gears (the weak point of the motor as you know). I did my 02 FXSTB about 8k ago and it's a mental relief especially with the stronger bottom end of the early TC88B years but I still think the Evo is a better motor but I can drive a hell of a lot further before my hands start feeling it on my TC. Just a thought Mike, I feel you are by far the most qualified and thorough Harley mechanic on KZfaq and you make it easy to understand. You're a hell of a teacher and as one of those kids growing up watching you guys blaze trails for us youngsters ( i'm 41 lol )I'd like to say thank you for paying it forward. Wow! Talk about a helpful video. Both intake lifter rollers are shot on my 93 fxrs convertible. Thanfully, there wasn't any metal debris in the cam chest. But, I was advised to also rebuild my oil pump to check for metal. This video will make that job possible.
@pacificmike95013 жыл бұрын
Thank You. Glad you caught it soon enough. Kinda walk around in there with a magnet too. You might even slide the breather gear out, clean it, send the magnet in that hole and just generally be pleased that you don't have a serious problem.

@@pacificmike9501 Does the oil flow from the tank to the oil pump, then to the motor, then to the oil filter, and then back to the tank on my 93 fxrs? I have the oil flow diagram in my manual, but its confusing to me. The reason I ask is because I was told it was safe to do a "5 quart" oil change on my bike. Meaning, after I fill the tank with fresh oil, but before I put the new filter on, start the bike and let the remaining dirty oil flow out the oil filter housing at the front of my engine (later model filter mounted in front, not below engine)?

This is 3 years late and a dollar short, but while watching that outside key not cooperating, I was brainstorming like I was doing the job myself, and I thought of something that had never occurred to me, and it may not even work anyway, but I wonder if you were to rub that key with a magnet for a minute would it help it stick in the keyway any better while you put the gear on the shaft? Who knows? I just hope that I remember to try my own suggestion the next time I need to do something similar.... Here's a tip for ya . You can simplify installing a lot of things with using studs to temporarily hold gaskets and other parts until bolt time . .Like Harley oil pumps . Screw that juggle act . I would cut the heads off of bolts then cutoff wheel a slot in the un -threaded end for a flat tip screwdriver for removing them . As a retired auto mech. ( '64 - 2013 ) it became a must for setting intakes & plenums on engines sitting damn near up underneath windshields . Kept many sizes & lengths .
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
Good advice. I do it with primaries and a few other things, but the old oil pumps are already on studs and the cam covers are on dowel pins. But, yep they're in my special tool drawer in both 1/4 20 and 1/4 24.
@rick-kx7gy4 жыл бұрын
@@pacificmike9501 yeah I seem to remember oil pump studs on older " straight shaft " motors . but my old eyes didn't see any on that EVO in this video . I would of thought newer Harley's would of followed auto makers and gone metric . Glad to hear they didn't .

A masterful engine builder showing us the skills of his chosen trade. Thank You for sharing with us. I know you are not one to promote a particular aftermarket company but, I'm interested in replacing my stock oil pump on my 99' Big Twin Evo with an S&S HVHP oil pump because I intend to bore it 30 over adding high domed pistons with a hot rod cam and roller lifters, what are the advantages in your opinion between stock and the S&S product and is it worth the money compared to the stock oil pump?
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
I think so. Although, the stock one is fine. Remember, a pump on Harleys before the Twin Cams, is about "flow," not pressure.

I use it in some places. But using it everywhere? Not so much. I don't use it in aluminum much. I don't like it pulling material out of the threads when disassembling.

hi Mike. great videos, im learning a lot! ive been having a wet sumping issue with my 87 Evo i have changed the check ball and spring and continue to puke oil out the breather. any suggestions on what to do next?
@pacificmike95013 жыл бұрын
Thank You. Okay. Are you running it long enough for the system to balance out? Is the oil clean? No strange curves in the breather hose, or it will act like the trap under your bathroom sink. With a curve that acts like a trap, it will save up pressure, then spit oil. If the oil is real bad, change it. Then run it a couple hundred miles. Then, change it again. That should clean it out. All I can do is guess what conditions you may have. I hope this helps.

Mike, thanks for making these videos! It’s like the manual has come to life. As I was putting my oil pump back together I noticed there are 2 set screw like plugs. Looks like they had some thread sealant on them, just curious what you use and how far to put them in. My manual doesn’t seem to mention them at all. Also do you use any thread sealant on the hose fittings?

I like teflon tape and most of the fittings are 1/8 NPT. I'm guessing you have a Harley of some sort. Be careful using teflon tape. Don't use too much. Don't block openings with it. Wrap it in the right direction. Practice with junk parts. You'll get it.

Mike. Thanks for all your vids. they are a huge help to SO many! I need some help. my oil pump on my 97 evo sheered a tooth locking the oil pump and all that good stuff back into the cam chest. it bent the gear shaft that is in the cam chest that is touching the worm gear. even after taking the clip off the end the sheft will not come out because it is bent. Is there a way to do this or do i just need to buy another motor? thanks again
@pacificmike95013 жыл бұрын
I would cut that shaft very carefully with a dremel, so as to not damage the motor case removing it. The bronze bushing in the case is no picnic to replace. I've done it. Be very careful not to get debris in the motor while you cut the shaft. Inspect the entire oil pump and probably replace it. What got into that gear? Something got in there. You may want to tell me more about the motor. Were you running shims on the rocker arms?

Mike just got done complete rebuild on 1998 evo .... I used an s+s high volume pump.. Rebuild went fine used a ultima crank due to high mileage original... Zippers cycle 80/80 package...used S+S Reed breather. Fueling lifters.. Heat cycles done as per their directions My problem is motor runs and sounds great but I keep getting oil flow out of breather holes. (Top side ) at a lose why?? Have checked and double checked oil line routing it is 👍 could the pressure regulator in pump cause too much oil to top of motor if not working properly 🤔 thanks enjoy your video's

Well, it could be any number of issues. Believe me, I'm not trying to talk down to you. Sometimes, we overlook the obvious. Did you possibly overfill your oil tank. Must have room in there for incoming oil and breather pressure. Is the oil in the tank not overfilled and oil not coming back in? In other words, is the oil pump shaft turning the scavenge gears and noth the feed gears. You may have to go back inside and check all of your keys. Make sure you did everything proper with your pump as per S&S, specifically for a 98 Evo. Be as specific as they are. I'll bet it's something very simple.

Hi Mike. Great vid's, keep 'em comin'! Question. I have a '92 FXRS-SP, 80 cu. etc. My pressure relief valve is stuck down and refuses to budge. Can I access the valve by removing the cover and hitting it with compressed air or a poky stick to dislodge it ? I've tried magnets but no go. Would appreciate your input. Hoping not to have to pull the motor. $$$$$$$$.

I think you're on the right track, but you're going to have to figure out why that thing is stuck.It's difficult to deal with an Evo oil pump in an FXR. Take it slow. I hope that unit dislodges for you.

I love your videos, I'm currently piecing together a 99 heritage Softail together. One question. What hoses go where? IE to/from filter, to/from tank, vent?
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
It's very well laid out in your service manual. But, bottom of oil tank to top outside fitting on the oil pump. from top inside fitting on oil pump to oil filter. From oil filter back to return fitting on oil tank. From breather fitting on crankcase, to the oil tank. Always check your service manual. Thank you.

Hey Mike. Great video. I have an S&S oil pump on my FXR that has small oil leak from the oil pump cover gasket. I was looking for advice on changing the gasket and making sure the shaft gear stays aligned and not bind if I have to loosen the pump body bolts and then re tighten. Since the motor is in the bike and the cam case is not open to turn the gears manually. I heard maybe turn the rear wheel? Looking for any advice on changing the cover gasket and what to look for as the cause of the leak. The leak is small but drives me crazy. I appreciate any help. Thanks!
@pacificmike95013 жыл бұрын
Turning the rear wheel is fine. That's the easiest way to turn anything in the motor. Just remove the sparkplugs. Make sure, when you remove the cover that you don't push the oil pump driveshaft in. It will drop the key off inside the camchest and the shaft will no longer turn. It is always difficult to work on an FXR oil pump with the engine in the frame. Be careful. Use a new gasket and seal with white lithium grease. It will work. Most things will not. Any grease that goes in will do no harm.

@@pacificmike9501 Thanks for the reply! Do you think it is possible to do with just removing the 4 cover bolts and not mess with the body bolts? or do they need to be loosened to re tightened evenly with the cover bolts? Thanks again

I am removing a pump off a 97 FLT with motor and trans still in the frame, how would I go about applying the proper torque to the bolts when re-installing. Love your vids
@pacificmike95013 жыл бұрын
No space for a torque wrench when the engine and trans are buttoned together so closely. Not easy. Can't recommend it, but, sometimes you have to "fake" it.

I'm an auto mechanic. When I need to hold a gasket in place, like that oil pump gasket, I use vaseline. It's sticky, and it will also completely dissolve into the engine oil. On car engines that don't have a good way to prime the oil pump, I pack it with vaseline. It starts pumping immediately.
