Ditching your board is technically fine if there's no one behind you. However, if a beginner gets used to just ditching their board, then what are they going to do when there is someone behind them? Chances are, they'll either ditch anyway and potentially injure someone, or freak out hold onto their board, and end up injuring themselves and potentially the person the person behind them.

Well explained. I'd add the turtle roll to the list, takes a bit to get it perfect and effective but in the end is safer than ditching the board.

Agreed. We didn’t add the turtle roll because of it’s complexity to complete beginners. But yes, turtle rolls are great during certain specific circumstances.

today I went surfing as a true begginner and little did I know that to my suprise that the waves were above 3 feet and I was on my foamboard. I had to ditch my board every wave and i just toppled lmao. This helps a lot because I can actually like get out without being worried of being hit by the waves,

I’ve been doing the 6’o clock spin and I didn’t know it! Good video! As for ditching the board, I usually just push myself in front of the board and dive, while the board gets pushed back by the wave. It saves time compared to the “getting off it and turning toward the beach to push it away”, but it can be less safe when the waves are huge ‘cause the wave might push you so hard you smack right back into your board.
@ilovewaves3884
@ilovewaves3884 2 жыл бұрын
The idea behind ditching your board early is 1) you give other surfers in the water time to react to what you'll be doing. 2) your board will only get pushed toward the beach and not sideways first and then towards the beach (covering more ground), 3) you won't get tangled in your leash because since you ditched early, your board is far away and the leash is straight.

Retired surfer I really recommend not turtling in solid surf. Some of my breaks when big were fat but powerful. A mall was great in these waves. I didn't ditch unless a lip was going to hit me. I preffered getting off the board and bear hugging it dunking the body underwater, this was good as some waves could break leashes and I did get dragged back but this was solid surf so that is a given. It's up to you guys but I really don't like the turtle in solid waves.

I’m a beginner and so if y ditch your board, you swim under the wave, won’t the board getting pulled by the wave that’s attached to you pull you back into the wave? Help
@kallecarranza4481
@kallecarranza4481 2 жыл бұрын
The board floats and will pull you towards the beach, but you should be able to counter it by swimming in the opposite direction (towards the horizon)

Never bail your board. It is dangerous for you and everyone else in the line up. Holding on to your board means copping a little more turbulence and might be a little intimidating but it's way safer for you and anyone behind you.

So, TEACH the turtle roll! Don't encourage beginners to ditch their boards! It will become a bad habit that is hard to break later on.

Whaat ,,no actual duck diving here ? And ditching the board under bigger waves ...Yep but forgot to point out to grab your reg rope at the base when doing this to stop your board from shooting out to the full extent of the length of the leg rope as to not hit some poor bugger behind you.

1) dickdiving with a longboard is not possible. 2) the board ditching is to be done only when there’s no one behind you 3) grabbing your leash is the worst thing to do.

Bad advice for beginners...you should never be taught to ditch your board. If the waves are too big where you can't paddle out then you have no business being out there...stick to the shore pound/white water. Learn to duck dive or turtle roll.
@kallecarranza4481
@kallecarranza4481 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like it would be more helpful for beginners if you explain to them with more detail why you don’t like this advice. Feel free to give them options. Ps. If you mess up your turtle roll, then the board you were holding, now abruptly becomes a projectile with no defined direction. This is very dangerous for surfers around you. If you ditch your board the way I explained in the video, then you will ditch early, allowing all surfers to know where your board is and what your intentions were from the beginning. Saying that if you can’t paddle out or duck dive, or turtle roll, you have no business being out there is unfair. And completely untrue. As a surfer we never know what the next set brings. We ALL have had to ditch our board at some point. Some of us are still obliged do so, when duckdiving is not an option. I’m just teaching people to ditch the correct way.
