In this video I look at some pagan temples and statues and mosaics of pagan gods to get an idea of what pagan practice was actually like in Ancient Rome. I visit the Pantheon in Rome and several temples in the Roman town of Herculaneum. The video ends with a visit to the Mithraeum beneath The Basilica of Saint Clement.

As an active practitioner of the cultus deorum(How the worship of the roman gods was called) myself let me express my gratitude for introducing your audience to the roman religion. The roman religion is unbelievable complex and from all the remaining scriptures that have survived monotheist persecution there is still so much to learn from it. The most interesting concept of it is the "Do ut des" (I give so that you may give) which can be described not as bribing as some might suggest but as handing presents to the gods in many forms reaching from incensce, candles, bread, flowers, wine to blood sacrifice to acknowledge and honor their deeds and presence and therefore to keep the pax deorum(Peace between us mortals and the gods) in balance and healthy. May be Minerva, dea sapientia guide you on your quest to make the pagan cults known again. May mighty Jove optimus maximus protect you from all evil.

Very similar to the Germanic gift principle. We give to the Godhin not to placate them, as though we're groveling ants begging the giant not to piss on us, but rather to maintain a relationship of frith with them. They give to us so we give to them so they give to us. May Þórr-Ásabragr watch over you and Ingvi Freyr grant you frith and happiness, my friend.

We really need to start building our cities like this again. References to and depictions of the gods everywhere- stunningly crafted expressions of the metaphysical and emotional aspects of life, depicted in such a life-like manner that you can feel the expressions themselves coming from the mere marble and feel the life and culture of the city even by staring its ruins 2000 years later.

The Roman's dedication to their gods is never portrayed correctly in movies. The movies make it seem like the Romans never really believed in their gods...like their faith was superficial. Clearly that was NOT the case. Only fervent faith would fill people with the commitment necessary to create such beautiful dedications to their gods! Awesome video sir!

a historian I know who visited the ancient Hindu city of Varanasi said when there that he realised that this is what Europe (especially the Mediterranean) would be like today if Christianity had not happened and her Indo-European polytheism prevailed in terms of the sacredness of Gods and tradition and timeless ritual saturating a civilisation and its consciousness
@ayushgupta4376

Hinduism isn't pure polytheistic Paganism as Vedas preach monotheism as well and Hindus also have a well oiled clerical system in form of Brahminism to compete with Abrahamic clergies. I've often wondered that why ancient Pagan faiths collapsed against Abrahamic faiths while Hinduism survived. All other Pagam faiths had little to no canon law unity and worshipped any 1 as God, but Hindus have a specific law in form of Shastras to govern their faith and can't worship any 1 as God if he's not mentioned in Vedas. Hinduism, at it's best, is henotheistic and the Varna system helped it to be flexible in times of crisis.

I've been to many of the sites you visited. Amazing what some people, very steeped in their Christian faith, say. When I mentioned to two different people about how exciting visiting the Mithraeum was, one said, "I got a chill, it felt so evil there." The other said, "It was really dark and disturbing down there." Being a pagan friendly person, myself, I was perplexed by their reactions. I felt none of that when I was there. If I felt anything at all emotionally, it was just a sadness for things that had been lost to the past.

Have you, by any chance, read any Mika Waltari? He was a Finnish author and historian who wrote historical fiction based in ancient times. He wrote "The Roman", an auto-biography style fiction about a Roman senator during the reign of Nero, that's absolutely fascinating. Based on the non-fiction I've read and different documentaries I've seen, his writing is historically accurate. His books are an entertaining way to learn history, and to feel a certain amount of intimacy with historical figures. He goes over the cult of Mithras in great detail, and well as early Christianity, and the relationships between Nero, Agrippina, Seneca, Claudius, Messalina, and many others.

The pagans of the Roman empire made an attempt to restore paganism to the official religion of the Roman empire around 390 A.D. Most of the Roman senators were pagans. But they were defeated by emperor Theodosius. Later, many popes came from these same senatorial pagan families. Hmmmmm?

thruthebook There are suggestions that the villagers in Italy remained pagan until the 6th century, or at least syncretised Roman religion with Christianity until the church was strong enough to eradicate the old gods from practice. Many pagan practices still remain to this day in local festivals, feasts and in certain superstitious beliefs by rural Italians even today. Pagan simply means "villager" in Latin. Which means the old polytheistic religion survived in the countryside the longest.

I wish you spoke a little about the Sibbyline books, they're easily on of the most interesting things associated with Roman religion.

The real purpose of the Pantheon is unclear. When we believe Cassius Dio's record then the original Pantheon of Agrippa was a temple to the Iulia family gods: Mars Ultor, Venus Gentrix and Divus Iulius. Build on the Campus Martius to remember the centuriate assembly of the family's glory (one of the most important voting criteria).

Wanna know something fun? Pegasus was the greek white winged horse that brough thunder to zeus Pahasassi was the ancient luwian god of thunder Apausha was the ancient iranian black horse of drought and black clouds of thunder who was tamed by tir (the white horse) that resulted in rain. The winged horse with lightning was reflected on islam when the winged white horse took mohamed to heaven. His name was "Buraq" which in arabic means lightning.

I read somewhere that there are late Anglo Saxon inscriptions in Rome from just after the Norman Conquest. Did you look those up?

What's your opinion on the idea that the slaying of the bull was symbolic of doing away with the old precessional age (Age of Taurus: 4400 - 2200 BC) and embracing the new age (Age of Aries 2200 - 100 BC)?

It always amazes me how much more "civilized" Roman living was within Rome compared to most Medieval civilizations.

The beauty of this art and craftsmanship is astonishing. Do you reckon the fall of civilisation when the Western Roman Empire collapsed was inevitable in the real timeline of history? Do you think the world could have been 1000 years more advanced had it not happened?

I am greatly interested in the ancient roman religion but it seems that very little is known about what the actual practices and various cults where about unfortunately, the same can be said for all euro pagan religions but Norse religion feels like its getting the most attention and research where as the faith of the greeks and romans are kind of in the dark mostly. Know any good books on this topic that are not misleading or "too mainstream" but who get to the actual real beliefs and practices of the old romans?

I know this comment is 5 years old but there is a book I know of and own that could help with understanding Roman religion. It is a book made by a reconstructionist group called Nova Roma. It is called Religio Romana Handbook by L. Vitellius Triarius. This book describes ritual structure and beliefs. Another book by the same author, called Meditations on the Roman Deities, is effectively a prayer book.
