In the eighth video in the popular series I cover an introduction to mission planning and way-points. This video could have been a couple of hours long but I've focused on the areas that you need to know to create your first mission and fly it successfully.
Thank you to all of you who have taken the time to give me feedback. the support is appreciated. Spread the word!
Thanks for watching, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE.
Happy flying.

After a year of learning to fly my first quad with a kk2 controller, and progressing to a Naza Lite (and making ALL the mistakes along the way) I feel this is the next step. What this thing can do is incredible and I want to say, "thank you VERY much" for a really fantastic series of videos giving an insight into what this board can do.

when setting heights from the start if you wanted to make sure it went above a big tree into an open field, how would you make sure it didn't hit the tree? would setting the first way point make it climb to the height of say 20 meters when starting at "H (for home)" for a quad copter before moving to that position?

Painless360 I'm thinking that the battery velcro strap came loose and the battery was hanging while it tried to rtl and threw off the center of gravity. I noticed the strap was failing but didn't give it enough thought. The only good outcome might be, that it slowed down the speed. So it may not made it as far. I'll find out tomorrow.

Hi Painless. After planning a short mission, I checked the loiter turns radius (as you suggested), and it defaults to 10cms. That's fine - I would like to set the radius on the mission to be 5mtr; therefore 5000mm / 10cms (100mm) = 50 When I enter 50 in the radius box it seems to be ok. I then write the WP file and (as in this video), and immediately read the WP file back to APM. Now I notice that I can't see any stored info re' the loiter radius. Hmmm. By way of checking a few things if I change the WP radius, all the radii on the map DO change. If I try the same with the loiter radius, it never appears to change. Am I making a rookie error or is perhaps my APM not able to load this info. The APM in question came with a recently bought Quanum Nova from good ol' Hobby King. Other functions like: stabilize, Loiter, Alt hold and RTL all seem to work exactly as expected, and I always get a steady green GPS light before take off. Sorry it's such a long question, but can you shed any light on the issue please? Regards Mark in the UK

Hi there, I just wanted to thank you for putting up your awesome instructional video's on getting the APM 2.6 FC's going. I reviewed your 8 part series and found it to be priceless in getting a very good understanding of what everything is and how it goes. I stepped up from a Walkera X350 Pro to a Bumblebee 550 and the APM 2.6, I am using my Walkera Devo 10 and its receiver; it seems to be ok but seems I need to revisit MP as it flies really soft (response-wise), as I am close to full throttle to hover. As there isn't much local support for Walkera. My supplier is suggesting a DX-8 for this and an Iron Man 650 w/Naza v2 fc that I’ve began building. I would have struggled for a while without your videos, thanx again! Now I just need get my flights uploaded... You ROCK!

xceleratedbill Thanks for the feedback, great to hear that your first build is flying well. The APM is a softer board to fly and if you want acro flying then the KK2.0 or cc3d are better choices. Be careful of replacing the entire control and model systems before checking that you have enough power in the motors/ESCs on the one you have. The supplier is recommending some very expensive equipment.. Happy flying!

Great, quick tutorial. When you build your waypoints into the planner in your house, save the waypoints and cache the map data, then drive to the launch site, how critical is it when you get to the launch location to be exactly at the "home" location you designated when building your mission in your house? If you're not exactly at the "Home" location plotted in the mission, will the program recompute "home" to be your current launch location, then readjust the vector to your first waypoint? Or do you have to plan the whole mission at the launch location? Thanks!

It doesnt really matter where it takes off from, it will attempt to hit the first above ground wp in the set as soon as it starts flying. Note, this means it will fly directly to the next WP after takeoff, and into anything in the direct line from when you arm into auto mode.
@luisfilipe1983
@luisfilipe1983 9 жыл бұрын
Hello, is it ok to flick out of Auto mode during a mission? for example into loiter or stabilised..what will happen if you do that? And also about the altitude height set for each waypoint, does it maintain the altitude set for the specific waypoint considering ground elevation (for example plane ground or hills) or does it maintain the altitude for the waypoint having in consideration the Home point altitude?
@Painless360
@Painless360 9 жыл бұрын
luisfilipe1983 If you come out of Auto mode then the mission will stop and the craft will fly in the new mode. Height is relative to the ground elevation (uses Google Earth) see copter.ardupilot.com/wiki/common-planning-a-mission-with-waypoints-and-events/ Happy flying!

Great video, thanks for sharing. Once waypoints have been loaded onto model, how do you start the mission? I assume you have to place the drone in the home position within the 4m radius, then start the motor using the RC controller, then make it hover, then flip to auto, then it will do the mission. Is this correct?

Will you be doing a video using minimosd with the apm2.6 or is the set up close to your multiwii and minimosd
@Painless360
@Painless360 9 жыл бұрын
Neil Hodgson Hi, the connection and setup of the MinimOSD on the APM is a breeze compared with the Multiwii. The MinimOSD was designed to work with the MAVLink data that comes out of the telemetry port of the APM so the 'normal' firmware like @p/minimosd-extra/ works well. The reason for the my MinimOSD videos was in response to a few subscribers who couldn't get it to work with the Multiwii. Best of luck with the build.

Hello, if I would like to have waypoint navigation, would get an APM2.6 or MultiWii? Which MultiWii FC supports waypoint nav? I guess Atmega328p ones wouldn't support waypoint nav... right? Which software is best at autonomous flying? Thanks!
@Painless360
@Painless360 9 жыл бұрын
***** The addition waypoint flying is very new to the Multiwii world and there are few GUIs that support it. Non well IMHO. I would always look at APM/Pixhawk running with MIssion Planner if you need the abilty to fly autonomously using waypoints. This video is a private video but does cover the differences - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oZqkhKSezJjXo3U.html Be aware that the APM is a great platform (and now excellent value for money) but is now passing into community support. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jMiqZtl_mLCsZo0.html Hope this helps.

Unsure what drone/controller system to buy; does anyone have any suggestions? I love the MP software and it's many features, and a fully-functional, programmable remote-controller would seem to be the way to go...just unsure what to buy in terms of a platform for commercial use. The 'turn-key' systems from DJI (in particular, I'm looking at the Phantom 3) are extremely attractive. It's just not clear whether I can interface it to Mission Planner. One of the people in my class bought a MATRIX for $3k, with an extended range RF controller/antenna and a nice, BIG flat screen display...very nice and very capable...not sure if that's the way to go for my purposes. Anyone?

Painless360 Welcome. I do have one question if you don't mind. I have a 450 Flamewheel with KK2.0 and DX6i. My first build and I learned a lot. So I'd like to get 3DR Y6 for my next machine and this controller, which is one the reasons I've watched your series. So looking at the site it says I need at least a 6 channel radio which I have but as I'm sure you know there's no 3 position switch. I use gear toggle for Auto level on KK. I've messed around with the flaps and mix 1 settings to give me 3 settings as it were outputting to AUX. I've seen others do something similar for flaps, but I want to use it to set Loiter, RTL and Stabilize. Do you know if it's possible to use the DX6i or will I need a Tx with a 3 position switch? Sorry for the long question, thanks:)

Hi, was your drone armed during the mission planning and the way point allocating? Is it necessary to arm your drone in order to write the way points into the apm and is it necessary to get a 3D fix gps to write wps into the apm instead of a no fix one? Please help. Much appreciated. Thanks
@Painless360
@Painless360 9 жыл бұрын
+Kenelm Thaung Nope, only arm the drone on the desk when I'm troubleshooting. Writing should only need the connection to the board. Best of luck.

+Painless360 Oh I see, but whenever I try to write my waypoints, an error message always appears saying that my home location is invalid. Why is that so? Is it because I'm using a no fix GPS instead of a 3D fix GPS?
@Painless360
@Painless360 9 жыл бұрын
I would try it with a 3D fix in place, You can then move the 'home' location once it's figured out where it is. Best of luck.

Don't forget to set 'Take Off' for the first command. This is not mentioned in the video. If you do not set take off as the first command the copter will likely set of horizontally towards it's first way point. It will climb along the way, until it reaches the correct altitude for the first way point, but this can be dangerous if you have objects or people along the path towards that first way point. I found out the hard way that you must first set the Take Off command - instead of rising up and then over a fence, the copter flew straight into the fence. So unless you are starting your mission from in the air at the correct altitude, always remember to set take off as the first command. Failure to do so could end in tears.

Okay, thanks, I've seen several videos of you and I think will be the right person to help me. I only have experience with planes, I'm thinking assemble a quad or hexacopter, what I intend to do is: fpv, aerial filming, planned flights, auto pilot with GPS and land at home failsafe. I am thinking in a f550 and have seen that the naza is the easiest to program, as you are an expert could show me what the best flight controller with GPS. I mentioned in another video I wanted assemble a f550 and regularly buy almost everything in HobbyKing, already seen several videos of the assembly. what the best configuration: motor + esc + propeller thank you so much

I provide this level of support via a chargeable support call as there is normally a lot to explore and questions to ask to get to the answers as every pilot has different requirements. I'd start by looking at a Pixhawk FC with GPS. 2213/935KN motors (depending on weight) and a 4S lipo setup. Best of luck!

I had a question below but here is what I found. I managed to solve my own problem myself. I installed APM Planner and clicked on read and the write. All went fine. Then I opened MISSION PLANNER and now waypoint read/write works like a charm. ================================================================-I hope someone can help me on an issue with writing waypoints. No matter how many waypoints I create I can never write successfully. The error I get states "upload failed, mission was rejected by the MAV. Item has a bad option WP# 1 MAV_MISSION_INV" I tried with both 3DR radio (works great) and USB. With USB at least I can read but not write. Any help is greatly appreciated! APM 2.5 AC_3.02 HEXA

Hi George, good work sorting it. What was the exact problem?
@FPV420.
@FPV420. 9 жыл бұрын
Painless360 The problem was that I was not able to write the mission to APM after I created waypoints. I found the solution by accident and I am not sure what helped me but I will soon test in auto mode. I've also noticed APM planner was much larger install (~120MB) compared to Mission Planner. I am glad I solved the issue. Thank you for getting back to me though. Cheers!

Just a quickie for you. here are the build and flight video's. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nuBiYKqAvq--eoU.html Build kzfaq.info/get/bejne/itGCjZlnqZ6moZs.html Flight I think "soft" is a good description of the flight. I ran out of power 4 minutes into thI think soft is a good description of the flight characteristics of this unit. Soft is good as this is for aerial photography. If you don’t mind, just direction; I connected back to MP after this flight as my flight ran out of gas with 12.2v’s of energy left. Full charge is 12.4v on a 3 cell 11.4 LiPo. In MP, the battery numbers were incorrect and difficult to check while having a meter directly connected to the battery. I’m sure (hopefully) this is playing a big part in running out of juice with so much power available. Part 2, I think I have corrected this but need to test fly to confirm. In my video, hovering was achieved at an 85% plus throttle at first take-off. I found a section in MP on this and made that adjustment.
