I've been doing this for a few years now. I started because of size and price point. I have found a few boards thar actually have extra motor pads. For small boards I like Mamba and Skystars. Never tried vtol and using a 4n1 esc make sense. Thanks for posting this.

this was exactly what I needed. I got one of those ultra cheap omnibus f4 boards without 3 pins for motor output, I think it is the OmnibusF4 V3S plus, only 26 bucks from ali express. I haven't got any of those header pins so I'm going to try to solder up a servo wire connector system.

Awesome, I was wondering if this was actually possible and turns out you can 🎉, I must admit my soldering isn’t good enough right now to feel confident to spend on a expensive fc and not feel like I’m gonna wreck it with every solder so could be a way to go a bit cheaper or a used one and give it a go , much appreciated sir

Nice video, I have converted a number of kakute FC for use with ardupilot planes. The best thing to do for power is to use a Holybro power distribution board with current sensor. They are usually not too expensive.

I love this video as i have now a way to use my speedybee 405 v3 FC as the esc broke down, one question though i dont seem to get any voltage readings anymore, is that due to the missing fc telemetry?

So I think I saw a post/answers on using the VTX control in Betaflight to turn on/off your HDZERO and the author was having issues with the VTX booting when powered using a switch/settings. A few people said HDZERO does not recommend using that method. Maybe I misunderstood the question/answer…I’ve never used that setting.

There is a note on the HOLYBRO website for this FC to not use it with DJI too. I wonder if the output can't supply the current that they need... I prefer to use a physical power JST connection in my builds for all HD systems... Happy flying

Thanks for this helpful technique. My situation is on the opposite. Since I am a newbie in this field, I 'mistakenly' bought a relatively cheap Speedybee F405 Wing APP without knowing that it is for a fixed wing plane. For the time being I have no plan to fly a plane (but a drone). If you have videos in the past which may help me converting this FC for quad copter, please let me know, I would be very grateful.

@Painless360

If you want that then you'll need a companion PCB to read the current and send it via the current pin. To be honest, if you want those kinds of features then get yourself a Matek or similar... best of luck

Maybe me being thick, how do you power the wing esc? the esc has the + and - wire from it, where would that go on the fc? or could i use the full stack and just connect the 3 motor wires to motor 1 on the esc? or do i run 2 wires from battery to fc and also attach the esc wires to the same battery cable?

The board used in the video is a good bit more expensive than say a Matek F405-wmn. I looked at the FC list on Ardupilot and it seems most boards are still over $50. Is there a low cost board that runs Ardupilot and can be converted for use in fixed wings?

Can't we connect the red wire to the power line of the pin header you made for servo, and use it to power the board as well ? Or the BEC 5V output would be too low for it to work as it needs 2-8S ?

I am a little confused about the ground wire going to the FC, my esc has a 5v bec+ & - which is plugged into the custom pin doohickey. My FC is powered direct from lipo, so would I still need the "GND pin on FC" wire from the diagram? It would link my vbat ground to a 5v bec ground, im inexperienced in electrical so I dont know if thats normal.
@Painless360
@Painless360 3 ай бұрын
I'm not sure I understand the question. The ESC will need battery power, and will only need the signal connected. Signal ground is good to have too... Best of luck
@CurtisRedfield

@@Painless360 Thank you for the quick response! The lipo directly powers my esc and the fc. Then the 5v bec being used for servos is from the esc. So would I still need the ground wire soldered out the back of the custom pin thing going to fc? I am signing up on patreon now, you definitely deserve it

hi Do you think I can add a 10.4 V Lithium battery to this and a powerful out runner brushless motor and 2 HS-82MG or similar servos to this along with 10 Amp brushless ESC? Do you think this particular controller with the modification you suggested would be able to handle it?

All my boards are current & in use. But I do have a few f3 omnibus I could possibly use for a wing. But I just threw it on betaflight & it won't let me flash it with the last hex in 4.0 or 3.5.7. I knos they no longer supported but what gives. No target in online so I do a local hex then click flash firmware but it doesn't start. Do I need an earlier config version say 10.5 or something. Anyone know.

Not sure how it works in Ardu software, but one thing that is very important to note if you want use a quad board with INAV for a plane is that you cannot remap the signal wires. This is important if your board onlt has 4 motor ourputs, since in INAV the first two signal outputs is preassigned for motor output. This means for a flying wing with just two servos you will use S3 and S4 for each servo and probably have S2 unused. 3+ Servos is not as easy. There is something called "Servos mode" that I have not tried which I believe will make it so all outputs PWM, this means you will have to forego Dshot 600 for example.
