James Gurney

James Gurney

Жыл бұрын

James Gurney reverses the normal procedure in this plein-air painting of a dairy barn. Instead of painting over a careful preliminary drawing, he starts loose with a brush, and later changes his mind about the color of the barn. He draws on top of dry gouache with fountain pen, pencil, gel pen, and chalk.

Every time I open KZfaq and see a new James Gurney Video I feel a rush of excitement that I have with no other creator. This man is probably one of the greatest contemporary artists and yet he is just so casually doing his thing on here like everyone else. This channel is the best thing I ever stumbled across on this platform, and I really mean that!

He worked on Frank Frazeta/Ralph Bakshi's 'Fire And Ice' animation very early on in his career. Quick block ins, picking out relevant details. And later, for his books, doing small color comps before tackling detailed large paintings. Teaches ones to say more with fewer strokes quickly, shapes and values first. Don't be afraid of that first step. First the whole, then the parts. Learn to see that way.

My mind transcends into the experience with you, James, as I anticipate your next move or decision to interpret what you see. As much as I’m deep in thought, the guy engaging you in conversation is a big distraction. I think you were very kind and tactful about “coming over later.” Anyway, great work! Makes my day.

We agree, the ability to reactivate and intermix layers is one of the very best things about gouache! Funny that art students having their 1st gouache experience often say that same property is the most frustrating thing about it. We loved seeing casein in action- we think that medium is way overdue for a resurgence in popularity!

Love to watch you paint and hear you talk about painting and what you are painting. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you paint large(ER) than sketchbook size. In this one, then smaller brushes figure in too. Just wondering why you do small so much. Of course your camera work, closeup video, makes it all seem larger. I am just learning about the crossover of goauche with water color. I am still new at it, finding the need to drift back to watercolor. I’d never do oil. Thanks for putting out so much stuff.
