Hello everyone, welcome back to my channel. In today's video which is one of three for painting this bedroom, I'm going to show you how to paint over vinyl silk with matt paint using Tikkurila anti reflex 2 white, and how to prepare the ceiling and walls, where I use my Mirka Laros sander to give the surface a 'key' as well as removing any bits from previous paint that been applied. Then as well I sand the woodwork/trim down by hand ready for painting (woodwork painting is the 3rd video).
First, let's talk about why you might want to paint over vinyl silk with matt paint. Vinyl silk is a type of paint that has a slight sheen to it, which can look nice in some situations. However, if you want a more subtle, matte finish, then you'll need to paint over it with a matt paint.
Any paint with a sheen level will show imperfections up more than a flatter matt finish.
Now, before you start painting, you'll need to prepare the surface. If you're painting the ceiling and walls, then you'll need to clean them thoroughly with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or grease if there's signs of that being on there. If there are any cracks or holes in the surface, then you'll need to fill them with filler and sand them down until they're smooth.
If you're painting the woodwork trim, then you'll need to sand it down lightly to remove any old paint or varnish. Then, wipe it clean with a damp cloth to remove any dust, which I did.
Once the ceiling surface is clean and smooth, you can start painting. I'm using Tikkurila anti reflex 2 white, which is a high-quality, low-odour matt paint that's great for painting over vinyl silk. It's really good for ceilings. You'll need to stir the paint thoroughly before you start, to make sure it's well mixed, if you need to add some water to air you in applying it just put a bit in at a time till it's how you want it.
Start by cutting in around the edges of the ceiling with a brush, making sure to get into all the corners and edges. Then, use a roller to paint the rest of the surface, working in small sections at a time. Make sure to overlap your strokes slightly, to ensure an even coverage.
Once you've painted the first coat, you'll need to wait for it to dry completely before applying a second coat. Depending on the humidity and temperature in the room, this could take several hours. Make sure to follow the instructions on the paint can for the recommended drying time.
After the second coat is dry, you can step back and admire your handiwork! You should have a beautiful, smooth, matte finish that looks great on your ceiling (or walls if you've done those as well).
That's it for this video, I hope you found it helpful. If you have any questions or comments, please leave them below. And don't forget to subscribe to my channel for more DIY/Pro tips and tricks

I must admit I agree about the switch to water based paints. I miss the build you get from oil...but the benefits of water based outway that. It does take a while to get the right combination (123 is excellent!)..., But once you find it, you won't look back!

I never have any issues with cutting in twice then rolling out to finish. I often have to mist coat seal as mirka revealing high spots in the plaster. It's all in the preparation. I'll use any fresh paint except for old emulsion the client wants to use up that fills up with cornflakes when you take off the lid. Just dropped on an attix 33 on Facebook market place for a ridiculous £60. Was in the way they had a Dyson and didn't use it.

Why are you using 123 on the skirting boards first? Would not for example, just 2 coats Bedec Aqua Advance be ok on any previous wood paint finish?

@@davewright9312 I've done the same occasionally too...just going on what I've heard from other trades. Not necessarily mirka, it would be the same for any sander I guess. Phil, is the Tik presto filler a fine surface filler? I use the toupret pre mixed fine surface but only after a primary and maybe secondary easi fill. I find it shrinks like buggery otherwise.
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Жыл бұрын
Not quite a fine surface, it's not like RedDevil . Presto F, is a general surface filler. Deep stuff may sink a bit so a second fill may be needed. If I spot small imperfections on the wall I'd use a fine surface, then spot prime once it dry before touching in

@petra yes it will do if used as a conventional filler. It's best role is after 2 powdered filler coats. I have used it in the past with a hawk and trowel to flatten out old roller stipple and sand down where it was absolutely magnificent.
