Thanks Richard - really useful intro to oil sticks. Like the idea of blocking in with acrylics first - going to give it a try!

I have been enjoying mixing oil paints with oil sticks too. The oil sticks I've used are the R&F Pigment Sticks. They are lush and creamy, but it takes too much of them to cover the canvas. Even more than it would take to do some impasto work with palette knife. The R&F Pigment Sticks are a bit pricey too, so I'm now using them just for work on top of brushed work.

Can you make a video on how you block in a picture. I can never seem to get the right amount of detail. Also I love your long videos of you painting something (IE the read boat)

Great picture and concept Richard! Michael James Smith, on YT, blocks in with acrylics and paints on oils afterwards too. He is going for the photo realistic approach using his method and I like both results! Great idea! Thanks for sharing.

You mentioned that you used a paint brush but since it was accelerated, is hard to see it work. Could you do a video on how to used, again, the oil sticks and the brush on real time?

It was so fast that I couldn’t tell when he was using sticks or brushes.

Beautiful paintings and very informative. I wonder how you cN use acrylics over oil bar drawing??

Richard, it looks like you are painting on canvas paper in the landscape painting. Do you normally paint on that kind of surface? I have used canvas paper/pad before and I get a little lost of how to frame it, glue on a board or just tape it to a foam core board?

thanks for this demo! I would love to see you paint something like the birds with the oil sticks- I am so interested in watching you lay them down as well :) (I now see the links below) What brand were you using?

Love how you have captured the light with the two wading birds. Do you know what make those oil sticks are and are the available here in the UK. I have tried W and N but i find them too hard.

I believe those are DeMarrais Oil Sticks, made by Paul DeMarrais here in the U.S. They are excellent. Just search for him on Google and you'll find his website.

Richard I was amazed that you could draw with an oil stick and then paint over it with acrylic. I thought acrylic over oil was at no no. Apparently if it's just a little bit it's OK? Thanks for the video as usual your stuff is great.

Note that I caution after the block-in to only use light strokes of the oil stick in the drawing stage to avoid problems with acrylic not sticking to oil.

Your birds and end plein air paintings are lovely but I was disappointed in the 'lesson". I wanted to learn how to paint using oil sticks. The blocking in and acrylic stages were easy to follow but then it was too fast to learn how you laid in the oil stage -how much you had to fill in each area .w/ the stick....or just outline and then brush...with/without medium.where you used stick, etc. I stll don't know how to create a painting with the stick. I'll see if you have other lessons.

At about 2:50, after mentioning using an ultramarine oil stick for your drawing, you start blocking in with acrylic paint! Should I not be surprised that you did this? I mean, acrylic over oil? ... Ok, good, at least you mention a possible problem at about 3:47. But, I personally would avoid using anything oil based under acrylic if I were concerned to any degree about permanence. Thanks for the video though.

I was stirred to the video with pretty birds. This painting isn't what I expected. Not light and happy.

Don't know that I've ever seen a happy gull; a gaudy gull, a greedy gull, but never a grinning gull. And anyway, one thing I like about the painting is the shimmering light. Makes me kinda happy like a trip to the beach. : )

I think that’s the beautiful thing about oil sticks, everyone expresses themselves differently with them. I for one love seeing all the different methods out there.
