Ahh spontaneously painting without a sketch is one of my favorite ways to paint, but I rarely paint anything realistic or highly representational in that approach, except maybe a landscape, trees, skies, or eyes in isolation. Usually it’s more abstract or expressionistic, because the lack of a sketch (ESPECIALLY in watercolor) really does tend to make it veeery difficult to compose a coherent painting with all the detail & variation of shading that I would want in a more representational scene. So well done! Quite impressive. I think centering everything around one fairly simple object was a good way to anchor & orient everything else in the absence of a sketch.

great presentation - you got me thinking - could spend some time than usual on a backwash to help with the overall tone of the painting, paying some attention to the graduation in colors and tones - and lessen the reliance on draw lines - where you can be freer in the actual painting of the object

Love this! Lol, how can you tell what color is which on that palette of yours? (I’ve noticed true artists palettes are usually a complete mess!)

Haha 😂 I’m so familiar with the setup that it’s very easy. Also - I think the camera dulls the colors there a bit. In real life it’s much easier to tell

Using watercolor initially in a watery form is just like pencil because it can just be dabbed and it is gone. The more one forces themselves to do painting like that really strengthens the ability to just go for it. If you forget your pencil, no problem a very watery neutral can be seen just as well. It’s really impressive how well it reads, without seeing the reference image you know that’s a white plate next to the mug immediately, nice. I was wondering if you have a preference when it comes to standing or sitting while painting. I recently tried standing but quickly realised how often I support my arm or hand on the paper. I think with a sturdier setup I could still do this when needed because I like painting large washes or making big expressive marks standing, but find myself supporting the board with my left hand when I want to rest part of my brush hand on the board.

Thank you 😊🙏🏼 As for your question- yes, it would really depend on my mood. If I feel like painting a little crazy, loose, alla-prima, wild, large size etc… Somethings standing up is great fun. For the most part however - I sit down. I’m not sure if this will help, but perhaps painting on a higher surface would make it easier to do while standing up. That’s how I would do it whenever I’d paint plein air in the past (: Ly easel would be higher than my waist if I recall

Thank you 🙏 On the home page of the course, under Bonus #1 - you'll find my favorite, most commonly used hues. I didn't list them as an infographic with my palette, because the palette is quite living & breathing (I constantly update and change placements, and even switch between palettes entirely). But very generally speaking, I use 2 versions of every primary color - a warm and a cool (they are all listed there under the bonus). The one color I have started introducing more is Verditer Blue for skies. It's composed of PB28 (Cobalt blue) & PW6 (Titanium White). I find it creates a more natural feel for skies, that still feels quite STRONG as a blue. Hope this helps!
