When Microsoft designed the Palm-Size PC platform it had one aim, to knock Palm from the top spot in PDA market. So which is better Palm or Windows CE?
Thank you for the suggestion ‪@lamtatyan‬

The thing that swayed me to windows was the total integration. Palm had better hardware, but the Windows CE devices had better software.

It was a while before you could sync Palm with outlook unless you used 3rd party software which for many was a deal breaker after spending ~£350 on a device only to then spend more to sync it! What I think was strange was the Palm-size PC not having any office software especially when it could have been ported from the Handheld PC, if MS had done that I think it would have drawn most people away from Palm.

I remember going to my local computer store the stocked the full range of palms, handspring, hp, Sony, palm and handheld PCs, then the pocket PCs which followed later, more exciting than any android or apple phones, I recall the palm had a bucket load of software vs windows ce those were the times

Boo! You're clearly Palm biased haha. It might be worth pointing out about the clarity of the displays, is that the Palm only has a black and white screen where as the Nino has 4 shades of grey. That might be seen as a plus for the Nino but agreed, compared to black and white it does look a bit less vivid. Another great video! Keep 'em coming!

Ha ha, I assure you I am not biased towards the palm with the exception of Graffiti which is the best handwriting input for speed and accuracy! The screen on the Palm is much sharper, I think it is due largely to the reduced number of pixels as this means more light gets through the LCD panel, the Palm III can display 4 shades of grey but the OS keeps it as black and white

Nice video! Would you consider talking about Palm OS 6 Cobalt? There's not that much info on that unreleased OS version...

Oh man. I really miss that glowing backlight on monochrome screens! Thanks for making this comparison video. Love these devices in their own right. The thing about the apps is similar to the modern day Android vs Windows Mobile... Windows just lacks the apps to make their devices attractive :( That's the advantage that Palm had back then and the OS is definitely faster and lighter.

I love the inverted backlight for reading ebooks at night! Yes that is exactly where Windows Phone went wrong, late to the party and a lack of apps! There were close to 80,000 apps for the Palm (according to some sources) which is crazy!!!

Younger people I meet are often surprised that as a child growing up in the 90s that it was even possible that I had something in my pocket that could do audio/images/ebooks and email/internet . They assume there was nothing prior to the iPhone🙄 I had music, image files, PDFs and .LIT Ebooks and video files of certain formats. Only Windows CE gave you the ultimate level of usability. Psion's/Palm etc were good, but limited vs CE. The mind**** for the youngsters is explaining that surfing the net involved infrared the phone/pda then dialling up to a line of less than 10kb/s, being charged for the length of the call rather than by data🤯

It's so true, I remember using dialup my Psion 5 and waiting for the emails to download as well as using it over the GSM network via an IR modem. You wouldn't even try to go online at 56K these days 🤣😂🤣

Maybe for the early devices, but later... I bought my palm in 2004 and 2 years later switched to PocketPc and never looked back. Sure, i would like to see your take on later devices.

The Palm T3 was released in 2003 and I would say that was the return of palm to something that was competitive with the pocket PC/Windows Mobile as it was then. The 2000-2003 devices PPC wins hands down for sure! I will look at doing an early 2000 comparison next year 😃 Also the browser you recommended for Mint is noticeably faster than firefox, thanks for that

You should check out the Casio Pocket Viewer series of devices and compare them to Palm. My first touchscreen PDA was a PV-100, so they have a special place in my heart. I later bought a PV-S400Plus, which has more memory, higher resolution, and support for third party applications. Both of them are proudly on display in my living room 😃

Can you do a comparison of these to a Psion 5, which was out by this point? I never understood why anyone would want either of these compared to the Series 5.
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing 8 ай бұрын
Yes I can, the Psion 5 was sooooooooooo much better than early handheld PCs! As for Palm/Palm-size PC they are more glorified organiser where the Series 5 was a fully mature computer in your pocket they don't really compare

Is there any chance to update or hack the operating system of palm because of the calendars problem? It ends in 2031? Help! I would like to use my palm m500 as long as I want ;)

The infamous Palm Day, 12/31/2031... There's no fix for that AFAIK. We depend on the dev community for that... or you could go back to 1920 on the calendar lol
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing 8 ай бұрын
Yes indeed, no fix yet but we are a way off from 2031 so some kind soul in the developer community may create a work around. The calendar repeats every 28 years so in 2031 just set the year to 2003 and bingo, good to go 😉
