This is a review of the Panasonic AG-CX350 camcorder, which is a 4K camera with a 20x zoom lens. Designed for television news, video/film production, educational and corporate use, the CX350 has a ton of excellent features.
In this video, I refer to a car maintenance video that I shot with the CX350. You can find that video here: • 2008 Suzuki SX4 Front ...
I shot this video (the review of the CX350) in 4K using a Panasonic Lumix GH5 camera. I edited it on Adobe Premiere Pro CC.

Thanks for a really great review, Bob. Good to see someone who still knows how to change their own brake pads:) I sympathise with you about some of the functions being a little confusing. My own experience with Panasonic cameras has left me baffled a few times. For example, on my HC-X1, switching to manual mode still leaves the iris control in some kind of semi-auto configuration, until you go into the menu and switch it off, that is. Not sure why manual doesn't quite mean what it says on the tin, but there you go. I'm guessing that it's for similar reasons that some of the other functions you mentioned seemed to be mysteriously disabled on the AG-CX350. Anyhow, thanks again and keep up the good work.

@@BobKovacs did you find out about the gain controls and setting L (low gain) to a specific setting like 0 db, M (medium gain) in the menu setting it to say +6 db, and perhaps H (high gain) to +12 or +16 db ? I would think you could set these parameters in the menu and then it would operate how you want it to perform (with the camera's these days). Does that makes sense and did you actually look for something like these settings in the menu, assigning specifically the gain amount you want for each of the 3 ?

Thank you very much for a fantastic review, as for the plastic covers over the audio section or on the back of the camera, though they look flimsy in the past 15 years that i used cameras with this type of cover I never had a broken one. The eyepiece though needs to be secured with a zip tie as they tend to fall off.

nice review Bob, thanks so much for putting the time in to this one. Just got my CX350 and am testing it to shoot moving subjects in low light like performing arts. Auto Focus seems a bit sketchy in my home tests and I dont see facial recognition or the ability to lock on to a subject as he/she moves around. Any insight you can give on AF is most appreciated. Thanks,

Thanks! I had this camera for eight days, before I had to return it to Panasonic so that it could be displayed at NAB2019. My recollection is that the autofocus was pretty good, but I do not remember anything about setting it up to track a single object/person. I thought that the touch of the manual focus on the lens was just right, so you might want to consider using manual focus. Otherwise, I don't have a lot of memory about specific focus operations. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Hi Bob in the scene where you stand in the foreground, have you experimented with blurring the background to get a movie boke picture?
@BobKovacs
@BobKovacs 3 жыл бұрын
No, I've not tried to do that. If you're talking about the "stand-up reporter" shot, I wanted the Capitol to be in clear focus. There was strong sunlight, so the iris was probably at f16 or f20, which tends to keep everything in focus. It could be a lovely shot with the background blurred a bit, though.

Hey Bob, Question, would you say this is a good camera for film making? I have been looking into it, but am not sure.
@BobKovacs
@BobKovacs 3 жыл бұрын
It is a decent camera for film making, but it really targets TV news and other more traditional video workflow. For one thing, the CX350 has a 1-inch sensor, and filmmakers generally want bigger sensors (APS-C of Full Frame) to get that filmic depth-of-field. That said, you could certainly make a film with the CX350. It's a good camera for documentary film making, actually.

What are your thoughts on using this for wedding videography in conjunction with photography?
@BobKovacs
@BobKovacs 5 жыл бұрын
This would be an excellent camera for wedding shoots. One of this camera's best features is its nice 20x lens with a smoothly controllable zoom. I could see getting a shot of the wedding party from the back of the room, and doing a slow zoom into the couple and officiant. That would be a really nice shot for a wedding video. Otherwise, the CX350 is on the big and heavy side compared to the typical dSLR and mirrorless cameras used for wedding shoots. Keep in mind that you will be lugging it around for up to four hours for a wedding and reception.

I suspect that the gain switch works the same as on my PX 270. The gain switch has three positions. In the menu you decide what the gain will be for each position. I normally run my camera at 0 dB. I have the second position at +3db and the third at +9db. After you set it in the menu you never need to go in again, you just use the switch. Does the CX 350 have adjustments for knee and master pedestal?

thank you for this video. could you speak a bit about "touch AF" or its tracking focus capabilities. can it even be trusted to track a subject?
@BobKovacs
@BobKovacs 5 жыл бұрын
I actually shot a couple things demonstrating the autofocus, but the video ran so long that I left them out. I generally thought the autofocus was pretty good -- I didn't specifically try to track a moving subject, but AF quickly locked on the right target and focused smoothly. When I moved the camera from target to target, focus was unobtrusive... like I had a focus puller. Only when the two subjects were FAR apart was the focus thrown for a loop. I have enough material that I didn't use that maybe I will put together a video just with that material.

@@BobKovacs when you say "FAR apart was the focus thrown for a loop". do you mean FAR as front to back focus or FAR left to right focus?
@BobKovacs
@BobKovacs 5 жыл бұрын
Front to back. I focused on something that was 4 feet from the camera, then tilted the camera to a building 1/4 mile away -- then back again to the close object. The CX350 was not happy about that focus change.
@formattester6

@@BobKovacs do you find its not being happy about the focus change to be similar to other camcorders you've used or worse? it seems many are fairly happy with the IQ of this camera @ 4k at least in comparison to other camcorders and even quite a few that are nearly 2x the price. would you rate the CX350 IQ better than most other camcorders out there now? it the 1080 useable? thank you so much for your input!!

Sadly, I haven't used a lot of the competition. I got a loaner Panasonic AG-UX180 to review a couple years ago and liked that camera a lot. The AG-CX350 is definitely better, particularly the range of high-quality 4K shooting it can do. The lens on both the UX180 and CX350 is excellent. When you take into account the convenient audio interface, nice lens for shooting a lot of different styles, it's a far better deal than a Blackmagic camera. But I don't have much experience with the competition, except what I see at trade shows.

Hello Bob, congratulations for your review, I think it's great. I would like to know how good the skin tones are. I have been using 2 Panasonic AG AC90 and one SONY FS100. I have now replaced an AG AC90 with a SONY HXR NX80 and I am very satisfied but I need a camera with 3 rings, I was about to buy AG UX180 but I found out that this new model was going to come out. The focus speed is very important because I record ballet in theaters and the tone of the skin. Thank you very much and greetings from Lima Peru.

Hi, Carlos! I did do some autofucus tests with the CX350, but ran out of time to incorporate that into this review. I'm thinking of doing another CX350 video with the two or three things that I shot but did not use in this review. Maybe I will work on that next week. As for skin tones, the CX350 has several settings for "wrinkle elimination," which I did not try. It will detect skin and soften the focus on it, so that the skin looks smoother/younger. That feature has been around for many years on all the major manufacturers' products, so it probably works fine on the CX350. When I had the CX350, I kept it set to the "Cine D" setting, which has a softer, more cinematic look. I thought skin looked good.
@CarlosTorres-hi6si
@CarlosTorres-hi6si 5 жыл бұрын
@@BobKovacs I will be attentive then to your new videos. I asked you about the skin color because I realize that Panasonic, although it has a characteristic color profile of the brand, I am worried about its accuracy. It would be great to incorporate the REC 709 profile. Very grateful for your response Bob.

My current camera is a Canon XF300. While this camera has only three one-third sensors it does have a fast lens. This lens opens to 1.6f. The Panasonic AG-CX350 has a larger sensor but will the 2.8f lens make this camera no better in low light than my XF300? Any comments from folks? THANKS
@BobKovacs
@BobKovacs 5 жыл бұрын
I have only touched Canon's video cameras at trade shows. But I have to think that a new 1-inch sensor is a helluva lot more sensitive than a 1/3-inch sensor from a couple years ago. However, I can't say for sure without handling them both together. In this video, you can see how well the CX350 did at night -- how does that compare to the Canon XF300?

Thanks for writing back. The Panasonic looks to me to have a better low light image based on your test but KZfaq videos can only tell you so much.
