I am testing the video autofocus performance of the Panasonic LUMIX G9 II with various native lenses. This autofocus test of the G9 II includes the Panasonic 25mm F1.7, 42.5mm F1.7, 12-35mm F2.8, 35-100mm F2.8, 15mm F1.7, and the 10-25mm F1.7. How good is the Panasonic LUMIX G9 II Autofocus Really? It's great!

The best part was when you were talking about the 15mm f1.7 and your tripod goes for a hurricane dance :P Shane, you need some heavy weights to keep up with that damn Aussie wind! Great to see old lenses actually keep up and be brought into the fold. Seems the G9 II is the ultimate m43 camera and video tool Any chance you can get your hands on some Olympus glass? Their lenses are sooooo good and provided they work proper with old Pannyboy, that would be stellar!

For what it's worth I tested the 18-35 sigma with the viltrox speed booster. It work. It was slow and noisy which is pretty typical for the lens, but it did work and was very confident at 1.8. It was the only ef lens I tested but it did better than I expected. From other videos the metabones doesn't seem to work well with that lens and this camera. But maybe a firmware update will change that.

Great test man. AF is very impressive. I just wish Panasonic wouldn't have taken soooo long to implement phase detect AF in their cameras. I have a ton of M4/3 gear and I'm really torn about upgrading to the G92 due to it's high price. I own the S1 but I'm pausing the purchase of the S52. With my luck, they will release a S1 mk 2 or S1H mk 2 right after I buy it.

No wonder the 12-35 2.8 and the 35-100 2.8 have been updated twice since the originals.. The focus tech has advanced to a whole new species. I'm wondering if you checked to see if the borrowed lenses had been updated to the latest software,, I ask because my Pana-Leica 25mm 1.4 was useless on the G9 for tracking after the firmware updates,,then I updated the firmware and it made a world of difference. Awesome! Would love to see long form recording? I shoot a lot of plays, recitals etc so I’d like to see if it overheats when recording 1.5 or so hours straight. On my GH6. I record open gate 5.8 kp 30. But 4kp30 is fine too. But I’m sure people would love to see 60 frames per second as well. I did hear that the 120 frames overheated after about 26 minutes. But if it’s hot outside it would be great to see what it does in hotter conditions. And then it’s easy to extrapolate in the air condition theater would probably run more reliably.

Great video! 👍 RE: Tripod. Perhaps you already have a heavier tripod but if not, you could easily get a tripod that weighs 2X or 3X more than your current tripod and it would allow you to focus more on camera work when shooting rather than having to keep an eye on an ultra-light tripod. Even if riding a bicycle to location a heavier tripod in a backpack shouldn’t be an issue. You could also just get a heavier set of tripod legs for shooting outdoors. Weighting a tripod down reduces mobility whereas a naturally heavier tripod requires no rigging for weight between positions and has no awkward dangling weight to deal with. If carrying more weight in a tripod, it might as well be weight that adds rigidity to the tripod rather than carrying dead weight to stabilize a tripod. I hope this information helps. (For reference I use a 14 pound tripod but that is far heavier that what you’d want for DSLR shooting.) Your channel is awesome and the content that you produce is extremely concise and helpful. Thank you very much for all of your hard work. 👍

I would expect the Lumix lenses to work well, but many, if not most of us have a mix of Lumix and Olympus and other manufacturers, and want to see tests with Olympus and other lenses. I have the Oly 8mm f1.8, the Oly 17mm f1.8, Oly 60mm macro, and Oly 100-400. I also iontend to get the Oly 75mm f1.8 one day. I have more Lumix lenses, but it is very common for these kinds of lenses to be used by G series users. In addition, I have the Sigma 1.4 trio, 16, 30, and 56, and I suspect a high portion of Lumix camera users also have this fabulous trio and would want to see them tested with the new camera's autofocus as well.

This was a great video. But . . . I would have loved if you could repeat at least some of the tests in really poor lighting conditions, such as might be encountered at night or performance venues. Also, for us street photographers it would be great to see if the camera can do anything to help the popular Lumix 20mm 1.7 a. speed up and b. do so quietly. That lens really needs a make-over. And in a perfect world you'd do everything over with my collection of Olympus MFT glass. There are some fabulous Oly lenses that have no Lumix equivalent, like the versatile 8-25 f4 and 12-100 f4.

Hi Shane! I have several of the lenses you mention in this video and I use them with the Lumix GH5m2. Lately I've been beating myself up with thoughts all the time.... Right now I need a camera with good autofocus to give a person with no experience to record me. With Lumix it doesn't quite work ;) I've already thought about switching to the FX30 because they have a lot of great lenses and I can always buy a ZV-E10 as a B-cam for very little money while still having very good autofocus. However, with the current discounts it is much more favorable to buy the Lumix S5iiX, at my local place the S5iiX is cheaper than the FX30 by about 200 usd. However, I may wait until the Lumix G9 II becomes cheaper as well. Although the MFT system has no cheaper alternative with autofocus as B-cam. I have a GH5m2, G80, GX800 and G100 in my arsenal, but I don't see a problem ditching them in favor of APSC in the Sony or FF in the S5iiX. The only thing I don't like about the Sony is the weaker handheld stabilization relative to the Lumix. I also don't want to use several systems at once, because I'm already getting tired of even just jumping between Lumix cameras. The menus are similar, but when you want to find something quickly it becomes frustrating.

I really relate to this. I moved to sony and have been trying to make it work, but i just don't like working with them. I find it a bit joyless and uninspiring. I just got a g9ii and while I don't have a cheap b cam option that uses the same lenses, I have high hopes the the g100 ii might actually be an interesting little camera. And, i'm increasingly intrigued by the bargain basement s5 and what I might be able to do with nice vintage glass as a secondary camera. The dream is to one day pair the g9ii with a s5iix, but in the mean time I'm happy to be back with lumix MFT and really hoping that they bring out a cheap light b cam option with auto focus.
@PanHydraulik
@PanHydraulik 6 ай бұрын
@nolannatashaTV Thanks for your reply Nolan. Even before I bought the GH5m2 I had a Sony ZV-1 for a short time and the autofocus compared to the G80 made me unable to pick my jaw up off the floor. However, the menus on the Sony completely discouraged me. I sold the ZV-1 and bought a used Lumix Gh5m2 at the same price. I'm still able to put up with its autofocus, but the G80 is already, unfortunately, despite various settings, not able to meet my needs. Its only advantage is a very cheap used body. I gave the G100 to my mother, while I also hoped that the G100 II would already have the new AF, and from what I saw they only changed the charging port to USB C 😂

How is the autofocus tracking when you are locked on to a certain person but others come onto the screen? Does it lose focus? If objects (or people) move in-front of or behind your subject, does the camera lose autofocus tracking on your subject? Thank you.

It tends to prioritse the person who was in the frame first. If someone walks in front of you, it will swap and then swap back if they exit the frame. You can lock it on to another person by tapping on the screen when a second white box pops up.

Hey, Amazing video! Any comment on the AF performance with Leica 25 1.4? I want it to be my main video combo with Leica 12-60. These are two of very few lenses that actually support the linear focus pull feature. I know the new AF is great but I can’t go all in an AF-only combo. For this the L-mount is much better, offering many linear focus lenses.

If I was shooting underexposed and it was critical, I would want to lock focus. But that is true on my sony too. I would say my sony a7iv is more reliable, but if I had never used that camera, Id probably have no quibbles with this one. It's more reliable than my sony zv-1, for example.

I just got this camera and am shocked at how much the AF has improved. I was just doing some tests of birds in flight and didn’t even have to do bursts, just single shots and they were all sharp. Never had to fiddle with sensitivity settings or anything, just worked out of the box. It feels like cheating.

What were the settings? AF, full area with human detection or something else? AF speed? AF sensitivity? What happens when there are many faces and we only want to focus on one specific face? What happens when there are many faces and objects BUT WE ARE NOT INTERESTED IN FOCUSING ON SOMETHING SPECIFIC? Full area without human detection?
