I like the Olympus color rendition in most of the photos compared to the G9. Front action focus was better on the G9, although it is an angle I rarely use. Some of the skin tones favor the G9, but it is fixable using On1 or Luminar without difficulty. I looked at both cameras before making my buying choice last month. Given the tiny differences between the two, I'm glad I made the choice I made and went with the EM1.2.

Foremost, I enjoy your information, presentations and format! Subscribed! That said, I have the Pen-F w/12mm-40mm Pro, and plunged into M43 for the monochrome - I was immediately hooked! The G9 with Leica Pro lens really looks nicer in color (less "clinical"?) but the EM1 w/ 12-40mm still rocks with monochrome, imo! I think the lens choice has some influences on the outcome, but this comparison is not a slam-dunk easy choice. Geez - maybe a G9 for 4K video with a few Lumix Leica lenses are needed? Thanks a lot! LOL!

Interesting comparison video. This is the 1st I have seen a distinct green cast in skin tones and a green boost in foliage shots with the EM1 II. IMO it is probably specific to your Olympus test camera. Please try 2 M1 II camera’s side by side and check if both have that atypical green cast.

For me colours and stabilisation go to the Olympus, with the stabilisation being a huge difference. But the G9 seems to finally have cracked the DfD autofocus mechanics that were pretty middling on the GH5 and the GH5s. You can see the microadjustments in the contrast system, whereas the phase takes longer, but snaps to the point and stays there. If you're using it to pull focus in a shot the E-M1 seems more confident on touch screen autofocus, but for a walk and talk video contrast with DfD is better for following. Two great options! Though I feel like the E-M1 ii and the E-M5 ii could do with an update.

Hmm nice, on the whole I liked the G9 more on skin tones. I do wonder if the interior light did have some yellowish cast irl or if the olympus is just introducing it. I did prefer the olympus on the panning of the castle tower surpsingly. Greenery, plants, etc is a tossup, sometimes its one or the other.. Video rendition and IBIS comparisons really speak for themselves though.

First of all: Thank you for your labors making this video - your work is appreciated! Kudos to Heather for being so patient for all the test shots! Olympus had better color saturation overall Heather’s skin tones appeared sickly green with Olympus: with Panasonic, skin tones are natural Monotone - Panasonic’s L-Monochrome looked best and had better contrast; otherwise Olympus’s monochromes variations looked better Dynamic range - Panasonic had more recovered detail and color Panasonic had better Image Stabilization Continuous Tracking - Panasonic better by far Face Detection - Panasonic better by far Touch Focus - Panasonic appears to be faster but perhaps should have mentioned exactly when the screen was touched. Slow Motion - Panasonic is better, obviously, 180 vs 120 ISO sensitivity - Panasonic is better but the two are close at ISO 6400

First of all thank you for the fantastic video review. A picture (or video clip) is indeed worth a thousand words. Myself, coming from a 40 year background of Richo & Nikon cameras (film through sensor), I made the switch in 2016 when the Panasonic G85 came out. I do keep a Nikon handy since the stills quality is still the best, but am increasingly finding that the micro 4/3 is catching up in terms of technology and capability. Call me a Columbus of the new world of photography, but I also come from a high tech industry where memory storage, hard drives, and data-capture advances on a yearly basis rules the world. I can tell you that from what I've seen over the past several years, micro 4/3 are the predecessor to a new age of smaller, more efficient, and higher res cameras in terms of both image and video. The G9 is getting even closer to that boundary with it's new features (that are so well rounded) and I'm going to invest in one. The G9 gives me everything I want and need in a camera body as an enthusiast (that does not charge yet for his skills)...and with the right glass, I am confident that it will give me the stills and video that will make me happy and also rival much larger sensor formats. All I can say is "watch out full frame and medium format". As technology progresses over the next several years, your days may be numbered!

Seems like the G9 does better on skin tones and blue sky the Olympus seems a little green to me the G9 maybe slightly too red. But in some instances the Olympus seems sharper. I want both! I think it would be nice to hear your opinions during the same video as above to get your take while doing it and then after evaluating it. That way all you need is a voice-over and you will double your mileage on the same video! That allows people to develop their own opinion and then hear yours and then cogitate on all of it.

As a video camera, especially now with the latest firmware, the G9 is a superior cinematic tool. However, the E-M1 Mark II has also gotten a big firmware update enabling phase-detect autofocus in video. And so, the E-M1 II is the superior autofocusing tool, which is important for vlogging or shooting stills with fast-moving subjects. Plus, the G9's DFD autofocus only works with Panasonic lenses, and I have a bag full of Olympus lenses, so that's a big consideration. We are spoiled for choice today. You can take beautiful stills and beautiful video with either of these cameras. If you're looking to save a few bucks, look at the Panasonic G85. It's not quite up there with the G9, but it shoots gorgeous video. I have an original E-M1 and a G85 in my bag.

Wonderful comparison, Thanks! Funny how subject perceptions can be. Loved the Oly color renditions and IBIS seemed much smoother to me, but in video AF and video feature to capability ratio Panny stole the show. I was somewhat disappointed with Oly’s recent comments of not stepping up their video game, for them to be competitive I hope they reassess. Great footage, I’m looking at acquiring both cameras and this was perfect!

Great vid as always. Very frustrating that we cannot yet get a camera with the best from all makers. The IBIS of Olympus is phenomenal but AF is lacking. The G9 IBIS is lacking yet has great AF and frame rate for slo-mo. The Fuji XH1 IQ has amazing build quality yet IBIS when panning is beyond jerky. The AF of the Sony stuff is brilliant yet IBIS and build quality not great. The Fuji XT3 is rumoured to being made in China with no IBIS. Its nuts that a camera company has not yet nailed all aspects, seems the tech is there just something blows in a particular category with all the makers.

"Know your gear" seems the forgotten mantra some days. I liked the tests, and the settings are so adjustable that the issue of "green" didn't bother me... nor did the difference in auto focus; the firmware 3.0 fixed that. Colors in G9 are more natural out of the box, albeit I guess it can easily be tweaked in camera. Olympus is crisper, has way better management of shadows highlights and visibly superior image stabilization. Skintones ar Bad (but yet again can be tweaked) but looking at Heather picture, details are much crisper on the forehead. Raw file would be needed to see if it's just over sharpening or simply better resolution. Autofocus is better on the G9 but this could be a limitation of m43 lenses which are not phase detection oriented. I'd like to look at results for wild life scenario like flying birds and similar subjects. For cinema functions G9 wins hands down

Is there a better camera (of any sensor size) for the price than the G9, especially for those who shoot more stills than video? I've watched at least 20 KZfaq videos on it and it goes head-to-head (for stills and video) with cameras that cost much more, even full frames and APS-C bodies, and wins or ties on most features except for the low-light against a full frame camera like the A7III. This is about the 3rd or 4th comparison I've seen to the Olympus and they all give the Oly the nod for IBIS, but the G9 boasts 6.5 stops of stabilization, even better than the GH5, so it is not far off the mark.

This comparison needs an update with the latest firmware. Both cameras have made big improvements for video. The G9 can now record in 10-bit 4:2:2 and has the VLog L profile from the GH5. The E-M1 II has vastly improved autofocus in video and has the OM-Log400 profile, although it's still only an 8-bit camera. C'mon, Olympus. Give us 4K 60p, 10-bit 4:2:2 color, a better pre-amp, and a more stable data rate! I know you can't change the pre-amp on the E-M1 II through firmware because that's a hardware problem, but at least the E-M1X has a better pre-amp in it. Not sure about the pre-amp on the E-M5 III. Hopefully the E-M1 III addresses these video quality issues, and hopefully that trickles down to the other cameras in the lineup as much as possible.

Thanks for the excellent comparison, Mathieu. I've been trying to decide which camera to buy for some time now. It is not an easy decision as they are expensive equipment and in the current scenario, where you cannot visit stores to test the equipment, it is impossible to have a personal opinion based on experience. So I would like to hear your opinion, providing some information about my use. I work professionally mainly with video, and for this use I have a GH5, which I love. However I am in need of a second camera, which Should work well as a second video camera ( would be perfect with a good AF for video) and as a good camera for any work with photos of architecture and food, and, above all, should be excellent for wildlife and Birding :). Ideally, I would like a very compact camera, because either as a B video camera, whether to be in nature, or traveling with children, size is an important aspect. That said, 4 obvious alternatives occur to me (all mft, since I already have many lenses in this system): 1- Lumix G9 (it would be the obvious option, but I never tested it and it seems very big) which currently costs 999 Euros here in Germany; 2- Oly em1 ii, which I am afraid is very old, but which is currently costing around 899 Euros new; 3- Oly em1 iii, which would be a dream, but which still seems very expensive; and 4- Oly em5 iii, which, although extremely compact, seems expensive compared to the first two on that list. What is your opinion? Is the G9 really big? Is The em1 ii to old ?can it be seen as an outdated camera and that will no longer receive updates? And is em1 iii worth the investment? Are the mark iii updates a must have that justify costing twice the mark ii (899 vs 1799 euro)? Thanks again for the excellent video and the opinion. Greetings from the Black Forest!
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, first of all I would like to understand better how important it is for you to have a good AF for video. You have a GH5 so you probably know how it behaves concerning autofocus, and the G9 is about the same. I don't think it is as bad as many reviewers claim it to be, but it is true that the DfD contrast detection system can be unpredictable, so if you're doing video work by yourself for example and need the camera to track your face while talking, you'll never be able to trust it 100%. My comparison video was done two years ago, and in the meantime Olympus has released an important update (firmware 3) that enables phase detection AF when recording movie clips, which makes the performance much faster and more reliable than before. I would say it is more reliable and consistent than the G9, although it is not the best in the market. The E-M1 III improves the algorithm further, notably concerning face detection, which is a bit more stable and the eye is tracked even when the face is not filling the entire frame. So overall , phase detection on the E-M1 II and E-M1 III can give you better results, whereas the G9/GH5 can get confused and focus on the background more easily. The advantage with the G9 is obviously a familiar territory when it comes to menu, settings, and the image quality is very close to the GH5, plus you have now 10-bit internal and the HLG profile too with firmware 2. It is bigger than the E-M1 II/E-M1 III, but the difference with the GH5 is less pronounced (the G9 grip is taller). I would be inclined to say: go with the G9 unless a more reliable AF is paramount.
@TITAOSTEIN
@TITAOSTEIN 4 жыл бұрын
Mathieu Gasquet thank you. With the GH5 I work in MF only. The B Camera should be a AF capable vídeo Camera alternativ. Size is also important to me when outdoor for birding. But it is true that the G9 menu, and the same battery as the GH5 are good points in favor for the G9. My goal is to have in this second Camera what I don’t have in the GH5. Concerning the EM1, the big question is if the mark iii worth the investment so high compared to mark 2. It is a brutal difference: 1799 vs 899. What I need is a better focus than the GH5 in video, portability and good performance in wildlife and birding. Do you rate the mark iii as being good enough to cost 2x more than the mark ii?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 4 жыл бұрын
The E-M1 III will give you better AF for birds in flight, because it has the same AF system as the E-M1X, which is currently the best m4/3 camera for that specific genre. The E-M1 II improved with firmware 3 but it is not as good as the E-M1X/E-M1 III. Concerning video, I would say however that the performance is about the same when it comes to quality and settings. The mk3 model might have a bit of advantage concerning the AF (at least on paper, but I haven't tested them side by side properly). So the E-M1 III can give you better performance for birding, is smaller than the G9 and has faster AF than the GH5 for video. It does seem to tick all the boxes. Granted, the price difference is difficult to ignore. For birding, you can see my autofocus rank with all the cameras I've tested here: mirrorlesscomparison.com/best/mirrorless-cameras-for-birds-in-flight/ The E-M1X has a 74/91 score and the E-M1 III should be very close if not identical. The E-M1 II sits lower with 66/81. Considering that the sensor and the video quality is about the same, that the size is the same, you have to think if the better performance for birds is worth the price difference between the mk2 and mk3. Also considering that even just the mk2 will do much better than the GH5, or G9 (51/69). Do you plan on using the second camera with the first camera as well, like multi-cam shoot? Obviously a G9 would be much easier to match to the GH5 in terms of colours.
@TITAOSTEIN
@TITAOSTEIN 4 жыл бұрын
Mathieu Gasquet Thank you very much for the answer! Much appreciated! Yes, difficult choice. If the Mark iii cost 300 Euros less, I would have no doubts. Anyway the performance 66/81 already seems more exciting to me than 51/69 (is that already the performance with the new G9 FW?). It is a significant difference. I will use the camera of choice, when photographing birds, paired with the Leica 100-400. Do you still use this set to photograph birds (em1 ii + leica)? Or is using another set? In the case of the video, I need a second camera, but for B roll and Close-ups on products and details. When I need 2 cameras in interviews or something like this, I use the GH5 and my old and dear GH4 (already damaged and with a defective touch screen) that still works. In short, if I could I would have a camera the size of the em1, and with the news of the mark iii, but with the handling facilities, menu and battery of the G9 ... and all this with the price of the em1 ii :)) ) Thank you again! You two do a great job!

I have a completely general but somewhat related question: Is M4/3 sensor regarded as good enough nowadays at 1/4 the size of FF sensors? In the days of film, the 35mm frame size was sort of de facto standard, but is there any reason that same thinking has to be applied to modern-day, very capable digital sensors? For example, Sony just released (A7=III) an affordable and competitive full frame sensor that can compete on price with the G9 and E-M1-II. So, I was wondering, where one might draw the line. Even highend smart phones (i.e., Huawei's just announced P20 Pro triple camera system) can take excellent photos. Then there are the die hards that feel one needs to go to MF (medium format) as being the best versus full frame. Confused. There is also the issue of AF with Olympus' PDAF vs Panasonic's DFD system in lieu of not having PDAF. Panasonic claimed in a recent interview (DPreview) they considered PDAF but decided not to go with it because of possible 'damage' (whatever that's suppose to mean) to the output quality of the images. Maybe there are videos that touch upon these topics of sensor sizes, AF systems. I will need to check. As I age, and weight becomes an issue, the compact and lightweight nature as well as the variety of available lenses, the M4/3 is increasingly attractive. Thanks.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 6 жыл бұрын
I think micro four thirds sensors are good enough for many applications nowadays, but a full frame/35mm sensor will give you more dynamic range and less noise at high ISOs. There is also a difference with depth of field with the same field of view and aperture, which can be an advantage or a disadvantage depending on your needs. Then you need to have a look at the entire system: the Sony A7 III is a very tempting offer today and I'm sure it will stay a best seller for a long time, but the advantage with m4/3 remains portability. Yes some cameras like the G9 are not different than a Sony full frame in terms of dimensions, but when you consider body+lens or even a whole kit in a backpack, then m4/3 definitely has an advantage there. Sony and Fuji have the best autofocus right now, the E-M1 II is good but not at the same level. The G9 DfD system excels in everything except with the most difficult subjects such as birds in flight, where phase detection remains a better choice. So I really think it comes down to specific priorities. If weight is becoming an issue, m4/3 is definitely one to consider. But it all comes down to what genres and type of lenses you want to use, because there are small primes for the A7 system that make the whole gear light and portable as well.

Thanks much for your thorough response. Much appreciated. Well, I just acquired the G9 with 12-60mm, F2.8, and have the Sony A7-III but is currently on auction closing tonight. I hope I am not making a mistake by selling. For one I am retired. I don't ever see myself making Spielberg, Lucas, Cameron style of movie productions at this point in life. And, being semi-retired, money is a consideration too. So I can not really afford 2 disparate camera systems and the lenses and all else that go along with it. Perhaps it is overkill for an individual user as myself I hear you on the DOF and bokeh (originally Japanese) concepts. For myself they are pretty much non issues. So long as I can still generate some decent bokeh, DOF with M4/3, i am happy. I know there are pixel peeper types and those that need to have perfection on every single aspect of photography, but that's not me. Most cameras nowadays are very capable so it really comes down to personal preferences which is a subjective issue for everyone, including myself. The attractive points for me thus far on M4/3 (primarily Panasonic or Olympus) are compactness, lightweight, a greater availability of lenses between Panasonic, Olympus and 3rd party vendors and the interchangeability between makers. The touch screen technology is about the best in the industry,. I like the ergonomics and controls layout for both Panasonic and Olympus, and the menu system. And, none of these issues don't even have any thing to do with the sensor size itself. Sony's menu system is horrendously complex. Panasonic has a more intuitive and simplified system and further can all be controlled by touch. Another issue for me specifically being in Japan, is that Sony's camera are only sold with Japanese menus here. I can deal with that but prefer not to. All the other makers in the Japan market will provide English at least. There are reasons for that which Sony reps locally explained to me. I think I will learn to be happy with the G9. I had GH1 and GH2 and FZ1000 once upon a time. I am happy with the controls and ergonomics, and the touch screen, still in it's infancy for Sony. Although just acquired, the G9 seems to be a very capable camera and no complaints. After all, there is no such thing as the 'perfect' camera that has every thing done right in every and all aspects. Thanks again for taking the time and effort to explain your perspective on the matter. Being still somewhat amateurish compared to the so-called 'Pros' I think I will review your mirrorlessons sight. Thanks again.

I should have been more precise : he says G9 has very good DR. You show us G9 has less DR than EM1 MK2. DXO says GH5 has slightly better DR than EM1 MK2 (they still did not publish G9 results) : www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Panasonic-Lumix-DC-GH5-versus-Olympus-OM-D-E-M1-Mark-II___1149_1136 So even if tone transitions could be less smooth on the Olympus body (from your test, I don't see any reason to grade this particular well exposed scene and both bodies produce only 8 bits video files), from your experience, what do you think about G9 (GH5) DR ? Maybe you already published a comparative test but if it's not the case, I should be very pleased to see a direct comparison also with an A7R3. Apart the Mega Pixels debate (and of course deph of field when comparing FF with MFT), I think DR is a key point nowadays. Thank you in advance for your reply. I remember being quite pleased with the GH5 concerning DR when I tested it. In this comparison (G9 vs E-M1 II), the Olympus does a better job with highlights but has darker areas than the G9. If you play with the shadows/highlights setting, they are more similar but the G9 keeps a little bit more saturation and smooth tone transitions. So yes we could say that the E-M1 II does a little bit better with DR, but the G9 keeps better colours so personally I would choose the G9, also for other reasons (better ISO etc).

The mix of comments shows how subjective the assessment of colour can be. Despite working with Panasonic cameras like the GH3 and GH4 for years, I prefer the way the E-M1 Mark II looks in this comparison, particularly with skin tones. Heather's face is more 'alive' in this comparison, whereas her skin looks more uniform in the G9 footage. Olympus IBIS is on another level from just about any other manufacturer, although G9 autofocus, tracking and high ISO easily beat the E-M1 II.

 @Mathieu Gasquet As you said 2 years ago, last EM1 MK2 firmware offers OM-Log400 which should help having less noise at high ISO especially in the dark areas. I don't think that Log profiles help with noise necessarily, quite the contrary sometimes if the image is not bright enough (noise becomes more visible). Of course you can grade in post, which also helps correcting the green cast (although you could do this on the normal profile too). But I'm not a big fan of the OM-Log400, it doesn't give a real advantage concerning dynamic range. I prefer the normal Picture Mode (flat), you get a balanced contrast and good colours from the start (colours have improved a little bit on the E-M1 III and E-M1X).
