Hi guys! In today's video we will have a quick look at the Panasonic Lumix S 50mm F1.8, tested on my Lumix S5 and S1. A fast native prime lens available for the L-Mount cameras like Sigma FP, Leica SL and Lumix S.
I don't really enjoy the image quality coming out from this lens, except in very low contrast scenes, but that's my personal taste...if the sample photos and videos are good enough for your eyes, then you'll be fine with this 50mm f1.8. I know a lot of people that are in love with this lens!
Probably there are some copies that have a better image quality than the 5 copies I've examinated... In my case, only one copy had slightly less blue chromatic aberrations and slightly better sharpness. So, I suggest you to try the lens before you buy it.

*Update 02/02/2023* The lens I've reviewed was defective and I've got a replacement, under warranty from the camera store, two months after I've uploaded this video. The defective lens was showing the same problems of strong chromatic aberrations (green, blue and purple fringing), like the unit reviewed by the guys of DPreview, on their website. The new copy of the lens performs as intended. I don't see problems of strong color fringing and the images are sharp enough already wide open at f1.8. At F4 the lens is almost perfect in every aspect. I'm not going to make another video review about this lens, but I'll keep this video online in case someone of you will have the same problem I had. If you have a bad copy of the lens, maybe you should consider to let it check under warranty. Ciao!

Thanks for review & not doubting your findings, but wonder if copy variation may be issue? A number of YT videos have spoken positively on lens, including competent photographers like Richard Wong, who noted Pana 50mm f1.8 not quite as sharp as f1.4 version--esp in corners--but still quite good. Although a thread in DP Review Forum noted product variation in the lens.

Thanks mate! My copy has the exact same rendering of the images like the samples you'll find on dpreview. If there are better copies, or copies with bad quality control going around, that's a problem of Panasonic...it shouldn't be a problem for us consumers. I tried my best to find a good copy of the lens, but I didn't have luck. Cheers!

I personally enjoyed using my Lumix S 50mm f/1.8. I found it to have pleasant bokeh, and a great rendering when compared to the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8. That’s what sold me on the Lumix lenses. The only lens I found was quite soft wide open was the 24mm f/1.8, but then again it could have just been a bad copy. Either way, they were sharper than my previous Canon RF kit except for the 85mm f/2 which was just as sharp as the Lumix S 85mm f/1.8. I’ve now switched to Sony, and have been using the Samyang f/1.8 primes to replace the f/1.8 Lumix kit I used to have. Makes me want to switch back just for the lenses alone, but AF is important, so I’ll keep waiting for a new body with PDAF so I can swtich right back.

Thanks for the feedback mate! I see what you mean. In my case, when I compare the Lumix 50mm f1.8 with other 50mm lenses, the sharpness, contrast and the colors are never nice to my eyes...probably there are bad copies of the 24mm as well. Thanks for watching! Cheers!

I think there is serious copy variation with this lens. My sample is razor sharp wide open, as sharp as my 135mm GM, i have a lot of Sony and Panasonic lenses, it is one my sharpest lens. The 20-60mm sharpness is Ok at 50mm but my 50mm 1.8 S is way sharper, even at f1.8.

CIAO Luca I just bought mine few weeks for less than 300€ on second hand market and I don’t face your déception about the lens. Regarding the cohérence with other primes I’m not yet able to tell you but regarding sharpness I can tell you that the lens is doing a real good job. Maybe try to test another one to be sure you don’t have a bad one. Wishing the best my friend !

@@LucaBono.Studio ciao Luca. I ended up selling the lens as I discovered chromatic aberrations and indeed not any character in the lens. And you know what!???!!! I finally found may dream lens. One lens that I already had and sold and decided to come to it again. Very rare and bulky but what a character … Do you guess ?

Thank you for another honest, informative and interesting review! I have risked to buy 35mm 1.8 (despite my S1 has just turned into a brick for unknown reason), I hope, the results will not be so strange like with 50mm.

@@LucaBono.Studio believe me, I also hope so! I am lucky it is on warranty. I am unlucky that no one can imagine what could happen - and that I have lost all data in CFExpress card. Returning to the topic - I am already looking for someone who could help me with testing this lens while I am without my own camera. I can't wait for the day I will be able to test it :)

Mine has quite a firm focus which feels great (some early ones were loose I think) and almost no CA. Very happy with it overall. Great lens. Maybe some copies had been dropped in transit or there were some sample variation? Who knows.

Ciao Luca! I agree, the 50 is an average lens, but for me it's very useful for run and gun work because it provides fast aperture and decent AF (at least S-AF, I rarely use C-AF with Lumix). It matches decently well with 85 f/1.8 which I have, but the 85 is cleaner. I think 35 is supposed to be the best in the set, but they all work well together

@@LucaBono.Studiowill you be doing a video on the Biotar 75 f1.5 II? I already have the Lumix 50, canon fd 50 so I think a 75 would be a little different 😅. Also how come you don’t use canon fd lenses?

Hi. Do you use, have you used ND filters for this exact lens? I’m thinking about getting a 3-7 stop VND filter. But not sure if need if I use vlog. Thoughts? Thanks

Hi! Yes, I probably used an ND filter for this review. You will need ND or VND if you want to film videos, also in V-Log. I've made few videos about ND filters in my channel Check them, they'll be helpful!

Thanks Lucas. I was wondering if you got a bad copy of that lens. I now hear that you have a replacement and it’s much better. I was wondering since other reviews and videos mention the lens is reasonably sharp. I saw a comparison against the Sigma 50 1.4 DGDN and the coroners were better on the LUMIX 50 f1.8.
