In this video, we cover Panasonic's two new cameras the S1 and S1R going through some tests in the studio looking at High ISO or Low Light performance as well as exposure recovery testing both the HEVC h.265 codec of the S1 and the MP4 h.264 of the S1R. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the ISO performance but the codecs are just not as robust as I would like to see. What are your thoughts?

The 10bit full VLog addition is phenominal. The S1 dynamic range is the most I have ever seen in a camera to date. It beats my A7S-II, GH5, GH5-S, FS5 raw and FS7 raw....by quite a bit! It's a completely different camera with VLog.

Wondering if you plan to redo these tests with the new V-LOG/V-Gamut and codec updates? It would be good to see for comparison.

Great test. I currently own a very dear g7 but would like to upgrade to a better low-light lumix camera. The s1 is the one I am drifting toward

+1 to this. Especially since in the US we could have a free firmware upgrade on cameras purchased before July 31st.

Any plans to redo these tests with the new video firmware update for the s1? It adds much higher bit rates, waveform etc... more akin to a full frame gh5

I don't understand what you mean about the CODECs not being as robust as you would like to see ? Is there a better IPB CODEC that performs better in comparison tests to the h.264 and h.265 CODECs that Panasonic is using ?

I'm surprised (and a bit disappointed) by the highlights recovery issues/limits. Reminiscent of why I moved on from Panasonic after the GH4 and today I am super pleased with the video from my X-T3. What are your thoughts on the upcoming full version of VLOG and this particular issue? Experiences with VLOG from their cinema line? Thanks.

Outside of RAW no camera can recover highlights that have been lost. The Dynamic range is better here than your Fuji (and the Fuji is a fantastic camera).

Great video. I'm thinking about buying Panasonic S1 for food photography with Canon 100 mm f/2.8 L EF Macro IS USM or Sigma 105 mm f/1.4 art. I am looking for some good 50 mm lens. What you think about that setup? Also I have gh5 mainly for video content with sigma 18-35 f/1.8 lens. In the future I want to buy a second Panasonic S1 or S1R body.

Sigma 40mm 1.4. Rivals Zeiss Otus and Panasonic 50 1.4 at a quarter and half the price respectively. One of the sharpest FF lenses currently in production as it was originally conceived as a cine lens. @@fellowcitizen Get it! I love mine! Though I use the EF-mount version with the MC-21 adapter! "Map Camera" store on ebay has them for $800-900 sometimes. That's like $500-600 off. Too good a deal to pass up!

Would someone please help me by explaining what "recovered" is? The recovered shots look better in the highlights in my opinion. I'm confused as to what "Correct" is versus "recovered."
@SewTubular
@SewTubular 4 жыл бұрын
You over-expose or under-expose your footage and then in post you "recover" it to make it look like properly exposed footage. So you darken over-exposed footage and you lighten under-exposed footage. This works best with RAW footage, but you can get 1-2 stops of recovery with standard h.264 or h.265 footage.

Great video! S1 is Amazing compared to GH5 😂😂 but the price tag, the size, the little and expensive variety of lenses and the 4k 60p crop are big downs 👎🏼
@SewTubular
@SewTubular 4 жыл бұрын
So what Full Frame camera can shoot 4K 60p no-crop internally ? ...People keep crying out for FF no-crop 4K 60p but there doesn't appear to be anything at this price point that can actually do this.
