Great video. Did you get a chance to test some of your wide angle (28mm or wider) M lenses on the S1R? I'm curious how the Panasonic performs with M lenses compared to some of the newer Sony A7x cameras.

Great review of what is happening in the photographic world today. Where most amateurs are chasing technical perfection of imaging gear but have no idea of what makes an image artistic and usually not able to "tell a story" via images or even what makes a great composition. Most folks would do better investing in improving their skill-set then buying new gear.

Thank you for this video. I am predominantly an "M" shooter but for 10 years I've also used R lenses on a Canon 5D. Today I ordered an S1R at an incredible price. Expecting to be impressed as an old photographer of 50 years.

Thank you for the effort of making interesting, emotional and informative bit. I can see a logic that a better glass requires a more sophisticated manufacturing process, at the same time it is possible to have a cheaper process to allow making a better glass with current tech. I am eager to learn that crucial 15% difference between sigma, panas and native leica glass based on solid examples.

Thorsten, Thank you so much for your thoughts on the Lumix camera and even more on where you think the industry is going. It is very insightful what you point out. As a recent new owner of a Leica Q, I can only say I get it now. The Leica lens rendering, coloration, sharpness is so much better than anything I have ever used before. I am hooked and definitely have the Leica bug. Again as you mention it is important to understand the type of photographer you are and how you interact with the device to get the outcomes you expect. I must admit, it was the Fuji X100 that lead me to my Leica Q. The Fuji was my first real connection to a digital camera where I felt I got out of it what I expected and often it exceeded my expectations. The Q does this even more - my expectations are exceeded so much more often and it is really a great little device for what it is. I often look through the viewfinder and think if only the real world looked as good as this - the lens is a marvel. So as I watched your review and others on the L mount cameras, yours has certainly helped me or probably steered me toward considering the new Leica M-E 240 which will probably be a more suitable to I how shoot. Having a compact camera and lens combo is important to me as most of what I do is travel photography, so something like the SL or the Lumix S1 are likely too large. Thanks again for your insight and perspective - you are obviously extremely experienced and biased toward Leica and I now understand what the Leica thing is all about - their lenses are just magnificent.

I think for landscape photography this camera might be really great. Lots of lenses to chose from also with the Alliance.

Thank you for making an excellent point about the newest camera's and the race to technical perfection vs making a compelling photo that doesn't require 50 MP. With that said, I would be interested to know your opinion about the image quality with wide angle Leica glass such as the 28mm and the 21mm on the S1R vs the SL. Is the quality with these wide angle Leica M lenses just as good as on the SL? The Nikon Z7 was touted as doing well with Leica M lenses and I can attest that it was NOT good with wide angle M lenses. Nice review.

Thanks so much for the great detailed analysis! I bought my first M and 35mm Cron a year ago and I love that setup so much although I can get more accurately exposed and focused images from my 5-year-old Fujifilm X-E2 way more easily. There's something about the M that makes it a more satisfying experience, I think it's the old-school manual controls and the way it feels in hand. But speaking rationally, the absolute performance of the TL/CL is on-par if not superior to the M, I'll not be too surprised if we're the last generation of M-shooters.

'Emotional photographic impact' is of course subjective. Sharp, 'perfect' images often have a more powerful emotional impact on me (when done well) than fuzzy images shot with older expensive gear (when done well), especially when dynamic movement is involved.

I've said this before, but I think that the SL lenses were made to cover the 45x30mm ProFormat sensor. Don't be surprised if there is an SL body in the future with a larger sensor. The flange focal distance is sufficient. ;-)

Excellent review. As usual, you shared your impressions but left the final decision to the viewer. It's not so much a "should you buy" as a "what would make it the right camera for you?" Nice. Sounds like it's a great camera, but not for a street guy like me. I'm not a pro, BTW.

Since S1R can shoot 6k I would like to ask: if I shoot video /picture without zooming with 6k and crop later, is the quality same as those non-6k shoot with zoom in 100mm or 200mm?

Hallo, Thorsten, with some of your other videos you have inspired me to get myself 3 Leica cameras and also a lot of Leica and Voigtländer lenses. I was working with Nikon till 2007, then changed to Canon an in summer 2018 to Sony. And from then on I startet using Leica M cameras as well. Mainly I do sport - where I need also long and fast 400mm lenses. But I had enough from my fat and heavy Canon 1Dx bodies. The mirrorless and rather smann Sony A9 is great (and so is the A7R III) ... On the other hand all this cameras are actually photo-computers. The Leica M cameras however give my the feeling, that photography is something different than using computers that take pictures. Leicas M-system offers very compact lenses of a very high quality and more and more, wherever there is the opportunity, I use only my Leicas instead of the typical fully computerized cameras with - let's say - a 4.0/24-105mm zoom on them. I think, there are right now different developments side by side: On one hand we publish more and more via social media, so that the high resolution of todays cameras is not needed at all, but on the other hand we zoom into 100% view on the computer monitors and complain about aberrations in some corner of the picture, before we publish it in a size of 1024 x 768 pixels. Even if we print our pictures in a suitable size for magazines, a resolution of 24MP is far beyond our needs. So I think we behave somehow contradictional. Apart from that we now can - thank to electronic viewfinders - use classic lenses again on modern mirrorless cameras. And my experience is that many good vintage lenses can achieve far more than once was necessary for 35mm film. I have a lot of adapters to put various old lenses infront of my bodies and I am again and again impressed, how good this old glass can be. Indeed: Even on old lenses from the 50s I can often clearly see, whether I ha a 43MP sensor behind them or "only" 24MP - but for 99% of my regular use. This difference is meaningless. I can imagine that more and more people will be interested to re-discover lenses from the past und also the technics from the past. All this modern mirrorless cameras like my Sonys or the Panasonic you are discussing here, are already on a level beyond most of our needs. To say it with the example of cars: Now everybody produces cars with 500, 600 and 700 horsepowers. But everywhere is traffic jam. In todays world we now have a flood of pictures, one better than the other - Millions and Millions - linke on Instagram. I must admit that I am not so keen on the next generation of fat cameras with fat and heavy lenses. In a studio - that is fine, but wherever I go, I prefer in most cases light and compact cameras and lenses. This is why I hope the M-system will not die ... By the way: The reaction of people is very very different when you are taking pictures with small compact cameras like the M10 in comparison to a Canon 1Dx with a zoom lens attached to it. One is really inconspicuous. :-)

What about using Pentax APS-C limited primes on this camera? Any thoughts?

Hey Thorsten, Bil here. I've also had the Lumix S1 for about a month. I actually got it as a back-up to my SL. Since we've discussed the Leica perspective on numerous occasions and both likely know some of the reasons that they opened up the L Mount to Panasonic and Sigma. I was hoping that the Lumix S1 would be a sort of Lumix GH5 with the ability to use my current lens set-up. I have YET to download the PAID firmware update that adds 10 bit 4:2:2 output and some grading options to the S1, bit I'm seeing that this camera is what you say: its a catch all. Competitive with the Sony A7S series, and others that are used for the expressive world of film and video. Odd, but not odd based on what this format even came from. I think of it like this... Leica based their 35mm format on motion picture film and lens design. Now, just over a hundred years later we are coming full circle. Do I like it over say a cinema only camera? No, I think the form factor of the BMPCC 4K is more interesting and the fact that it captures more dynamic range and dual ISO RAW video. But is it something that the industry itself needs? Likely yes. Will I follow? Unsure. Comparing the images I get with my 2015 Leica SL to the Lumix with the same lenses, I STILL get the images I want with my SL over the S1. Glad Lumix went this way, and with the help of the L Mount Alliance!! But who knows... oh and NOW they launched the S1H, at 6k 3:2 SQUARE format video... I don't know...

how do you adapt nikon F lenses to this?

I agree with your basic assessment. This is a great camera for the studio or tripod based outdoor work. Anything but street photography. It is too large, too complex, and in general an ergonomic nightmare to be used for the type of extemporaneous photography that you have built your photographic/business life around. You can't just grab it and go like the M10 or the Q and expect your muscle memory of how those cameras work to take over and allow you to compose and shoot an emotional moment on the street almost instantaneously. Also thanks for the explanation of how the L Mount system really is supposed to work from a segment perspective. Leica on top with perfection, Panasonic for working professionals, and Sigma for everyone else. One last item, just because something is handmade doesn't necessarily make it better in my opinion. Leica is just as much a marketing company as all the rest, and this little tidbit allows them to increase the price of their equipment dis-proportionally to the value added. And as the precision of their lens increases, they will reach a point where machine assembly will be a requirement, not an option for them.

I think the lenses, build quality, and interface, take precedence over megapixels above 24 megapixels. I think 50 megapixels seems to be the max for FF cameras, without serious issues in focus and image stability. Many people are thinking 24 megapixels is the sweet spot.

Leica T 35 mm, when you use with S1r, is there dark corners?

I walked the other day though my candy store , 7 stories building full with cameras and equipment. I had some nice new cameras in my hand. Nikon z7, Fujifilm XT-3 and so on, yes they are small bodies actually similar to a Leica M body. BUT : The lenses .... all too big in my opinion this was the reason to move from DSLR to Leica M . I can’t go back to Mirrorless even if the camera body’s are superior with features. The size of the M system lenses is only matched with some lenses from the M4/3 system. For street and travel photography are not may options if you want interchangeable lenses and you want to stay on the smaller side .

Thorsten has only gone and get the Leica M-10 P safari edition. Hahaha! Love the look of that thing, but can't afford it, yet.

Mirrorless doesn’t have to be tiny . Nothing wrong with DSLR cameras . Some tiny cameras are uncomfortable .

Sorry to say this, but there are way too many camera reviews. I thought that this may be different, but unfortunately, the messages are similar. There's no such thing as a bad camera these days, and we should have far more vblogs about photography and less about camera and gear.

With camera companies dumb enough (imo) to go for cameras that have the weight and size of a small moon, Leica is going to live forever.

Rugged, weather-sealed pro equipment that can withstand the elements and have 400K shutter cycles are probably going to be heavier than most, yes. Grown men complaining that a camera and lens are too heavy is kind of... sad. I've seen women and quite a few women reviewers on KZfaq handle the 1D X mark II, the Nikon D5 or the S1, S1R, or the latest Fuji GFX100 without complaining. How did pros ever handle DSLRs for decades?

Mirrorless Medium Format cameras are getting smaller and mirrorless Full Frame cameras are becoming larger 🤷🏻‍♂️. In the case of SL and S1 too large for anything other than Studio IMO. But I understand, it's much easier and more cost effective to design really large FF lenses with less compromises and high IQ than small optics aka Sigma. On the other hand I have every confidence modern Leica M glass can handle much more resolution than the current Leica M10 sensor.

Hang on. So, imperfection allows you to focus on "content"? That's ridiculous. You can have technical perfection and content too and to some, content without technical perfection is failure and/or distraction. Your photo should stand on it's own without any aesthetic imperfections or image quality good or bad. If your photo relies solely on imperfection then it's just a gimmick.

Nice camera but I wouldnt buy any L mount full frame lenses they are all, without exception by all three manufacturers, bloated overweight monstrosities. I really dont care how good they may be optically, for me personally, as you say, they are unuseable and not for me. My full frame Nikon D700 gives superb results with Nikkor AF-D and AIS compact primes as they did for photojournalists throughout the last years of the 20thC. I am scathing of these lens designs as they are self indulgent, they havent obeyed the first rule of design; how will a photographer use these. Just two compact AF primes for street and travel along with the large studio lenses would make these cameras worthwhile. BUT, I did like the look of the TL lenses on this body and my APS TL2 has 23mm and 18-56 zooms as well as adapted Voightlander and Nikkor primes. I wonder how much vignetting the TL lenses would have on the full frame sensor; my D700 gives about 3/4 image using APS lenses which is very useable. Have you looked at that? I might consider this camera or a Leica SL if I could add my TL lenses and add the 35mm f1.4 usefully along with my manually adapted Nikkors and M-mount lenses ;-)
