Thanks for the clarification and in-depth view! I am a bit torn in this whole endevour. The dream mode sounds very nice, but at least for projection setups that means we need longer taking lenses. However, only one (rather pricey) single focusser is good with long taking lenses, all others cripple the quality. Yet you can't use that focusser, the FVD-16b, in wide setups. So you have to switch focussers along taking lenses if you want to maintain IQ, which is kind of a hassle. From my understanding, the S5 lets us set the desqueeze manually (unlike the GH5(s)), so we can use 2X destretch and 2X IBIS even when we record 16:9. In 16:9 4K rec, we'd get slightly larger than S35 at ~20.25mm which is already pretty nice. And that "dream height" would finally be accessible with the raw update I suppose, unless they cripple it by only making it 16:9. Drawbacks are a lower res (roughly 86% after cropping) and worse preview (I assume the cam desqueezes to 3.55:1 instead of cropping sides). My plan would be to switch between modes - 16:9 for "stationary" shots that need the depth, anamorphic mode for fast paced stuff (as it has better rolling shutter performance). I desperately hope they'll allow at least also 25p for the photo modes, as that would be very very attractive option. p.s.: isn't it a shame that the HFR modes are always only 16:9? Imagine a mode that would allow less fps, but were 1920x1440 4:3. Absolutely usable for 2K delivery and maybe even workable in a 4K timeline if we do some magic to it. 1080 height is just a bit too little to me; even if it were only 100fps, that would be so dope

I’ve been anamorfaking my films since 2016, and while I love the super cheap adapters I’ve built, and the helios 44-2 is a heaven send, but I can’t wait to really dig in to a full anamorphic set up one day. Right now it’s just price and usability stopping me. My films tend to be fairly long and I’m not sure I’m up to the task of solo shooting a whole movie anamorphically yet. But I’ll get there.

super interested in trying this camera for a handheld anamorphic setup..going to have to rent it and see if it works out in reality like it does in my head haha

I’m kinda in “wait and see” mode for jumping to LF anamorphic at the moment. If the S1H had better AF for my other applications outside of anamorphic, I could justify an upgrade to that body, but as it stands, I’ll wait to see what the (theoretical) S2H AF performance is like, and either snag a discounted S1H or its replacement depending on the features. I know there are also AF add-on products in the works for Panny/BM cams, but who knows what those might look like or when they will show up. I think the other wild card in this category is Fuji’s GFX. If they do an open gate video mode on one of their LF bodies, that’s a pretty serious “gloves are off” kinda situation. With the Metabones GFX booster, open gate puts those sensors up into nearly IMAX territory, which would be super fun to play with, regardless of other features or price point.

Has anything changed? What would be the best option right now for the best FOV with something like an 8Z and would an SLR magic rangefinder work fine for a single focus solution on the 8Z? What are your thoughts for an entry level being the 8Z?

I might be a little confused, but is it possible to shoot open gate 3:2 and crop to 4:3 in post while you use an external recorder to force it to desqueeze for monitoring, if it cannot already be done internally in 3:2 open gate? I agree that there should be native modes, but wouldn’t this yield the same result?

In other words the APSC crop mode on the S5 is not the same size as the S1H Super 35 mode? I assumed they were the same size despite different labeling just for these two cameras...

Are you saying on the S5 that I can shoot 15 minutes of 4:3 at 30 fps using the 6k photo mode as a workaround? Will this record internally? I'm looking at the S5 but have been disappointed it doesn't have the open gate features of the S5ii. Very informative video. Thank you.

In the live stream with @photojoseph I heard you talking about lens adapter used horizontally to squeeze up the height of the 16:9 mode in order to create a 4:3 full frame aspect ratio (Pavlikovski style). Have you ever done the maths in order to achieve that result? Like a 1.33 or 1.35 (great joy I kind of like) adapter? Or something less than that? I’m not sure about that size. Also I’m sure it’ll be a pain to make a vertical desqueeze afterwords, not to mention monitoring on some external screen. I’m into shooting a indie feature with s5 and considering which budget lenses/setup would do the best for this setup. Hi! So I'm brand new to shooting anamorphic and recently bought the Lumix S5 alongside the Sirui 50mm T2.9. Being a little disappointed by the crop on the regular anamorphic modes, I have been playing about (very unscientifically) with just using 5.9K ProRes Raw, with the Sirui, and in post, after the desqueeze, just trimming off the left and right frame excess... is this a bad idea? Am I not getting the max vertical resolution?

Even though this is kind of random I’m wondering if you might be testing the Raipido Technology FVD 16B and possibly comparing it to the FVD 16A with Achromatic diopter?

IF you did film on the full sensor, would there be any "shuffling" of the image as the object oved across the screen? How much worse is it when compared to a GH5II, same lens and same object moving? Ive seen the S5 vrs the GH5 and the S5 was terrible. ALSO If you are using a PL mount Scope lense, is there a crop factor with the SH1? Or which do and dont suffer a crop?

I’m thinking of using the S5 at 5.9K, 16:9 aspect ratio, 12 bit BRAW to a Video Assist recorder and simply cropping the sides. Does this sound like a good anamorphic solution?

I'm intrigued at what the RAW 5.7K might offer for anamorphic shooters. To me, I'm more excited about the possibility of using more of the sensor than the RAW with that mode, so I hope they don't crop it 16:9. I hope it might be a possibility since the recording processing is removed from the camera and given to the Ninja V, meaning the camera would have more resources to output a clean feed of the full sensor.

Hey Tito! I just tried out the 6K photo mode and got super weird IBIS stuff happening. Is it not possible to anamorphic stabilize in this mode?

I think Panasonic have released a firmware upgrade, but I am struggling to work out whether this now includes full frame Anamorphic output....I think it does.

There's one thing you didn't mention, Tito, and that is HDMI output. S1 stops outputting HDMI signal once you start recording in 4:3 6K Photo Mode (30 fps). Live preview during composing works fine, it just disappears as soon as you press record (and appears once again when you stop it). Same thing applies to GH5 and its fabulous 4992 x 3744 Open Gate mode. Does S5 suffer from it, too? BUT not all hope is lost and there's a workaround: FieldMonitor app by Adam Wilt (available only on iOS devices). It allows you to monitor the image via WiFi and supports LUTs, anamorphic options, etc. Surely, it's not as reliable as wired connection and the resolution isn't the best either, but it's something, right?

S1H also has BRAW, unlike other Panasonic, Sony, Nikon, or Canon cameras.

Can the S5 do full frame 4:3?

To me using 16:9 aps-c mode with 1.33x lens makes more sense then using 4:3 anamorphic mode with 1.8x: - anamorphic does not shoot 60p - resolution for 16:9 gives me full 4k width of 3840 and height of 2160 can be oversampled in post that could give me better image quality instead of scaling up width of 3328px - sensor coverage is only 5% smaller then 4:3 anamorphic. It is 315mm2 in 16:9 compared to 330mm2 in 4:3 Anamorphic - price for 1.33x lens is way lower than 1.8x lenses Teoretically if there was 1.33x fullframe anamorphic lens, it is best to shoot in ff 16:9 mode. sensor area is 715mm2 in that case. am I missing something there? is there some issue using 16:9 with 1.33x lens?

So, the gh4 and the g7 is better (maybe a couple of others in the g line before ibis was introduced). The s5 has ibis to soften and jerk the image like the gh5 on top of being way too expensive and not having a full res sensor readout. I'm not sure who they're aiming this camera at. It's not good enough for pros, too expensive for consumers. Wedding videographers who settle for quality of life enhancements at the expense of image? Maybe. Though, there's no hdmi out on this (or the g line, except for the king, gh4).
