Talk’s Julia Hartley-Brewer is joined by Professor of Evidence-Based Medicine at the University of Oxford, Carl Heneghan, to discuss new research that has found the new ‘miracle’ weight-loss jabs could raise the risk of going blind.
Harvard researchers found that people taking semaglutide, also known by the brand name Wegovy, were significantly more likely to develop a rare and irreversible eye condition.
Carl says the UK has a “pandemic of obesity”.

Imagine how well off the NHS would be if everyone was at their ideal BMI? Can you imagine a Doctor trying to treat an obese person? What are the chances of success when the patient is eating themselves to death?

Born with great genetics. I could eat an actual horse and I wouldn’t put an ounce on. Not all obese people are lazy and gutsy.

Just cut out the carbs, sugar, seed oils and processed junk.

Agree. Funny how these things don’t ever get mentioned though in news pieces such as this. They just roll out the (very tired and erroneous) message “eat less exercise more”.

Did the study adjust for BMI in both groups-those on Ozempic and those not? This seems crucial since higher BMI is directly correlated with the incidence of this eye issue. Ignoring this could really skew the results.

Ozempic works well in assisting weight control for Diabetic people. When it was available it assisted me in keeping my weight at an acceptable level. It was prescribed by my Diabetic Specialist and was under their control for around two and a half years. Last summer it became available without a Doctors Prescription or any control by a GP or specialist. What has happened is that now the NHS cannot get sufficient supplies and it's therefore no longer available to Diabetic people that need it. Doctors can no longer prescribe it as it's simply not available to the NHS. This is because the general public and especially those who are simply overweight, or think they are overweight buy it privately and use it without any medical oversight. As with many things, having no medical oversight means that people are probably prone to taking more Ozempic than is safe, which leads to possible side effects. This is not about Ozempic being unsafe. It's about it being available as an almost "fashion drug" to the public who do see it as something of a wonder drug. When under the control of Doctors it's perfectly safe to take, and NEEDED by so many people who can now no longer get it because, as I've said, the NHS cannot get sufficient supplies! I do also stress that for Diabetics it's not a Wonder Drug that sheds weight. It's used as part of a medically controlled group of medications that assist diabetics to live a healthy and safe life.

@@ShanePalmer-yo4og So is it in your family or because of being over weight and inactive? I'm asking because a friend has type 2 and is now insulin dependent and she can't get a straight answer from doctors etc.
