oversized hardcovers galore, including a ruthlessly short glance on "the Incal" and on other Jodorowsky/Moebius stuff, and on Barbarella and comics from Juan Gimenez and on lesser known gems .... and did I mentioned Moebius?

Awesome collection. I am envious. Must work on my own... Maybe a book depository order every payday... No Valerian ? Or sillage ? In English its known as Techno - Priests.

flashdamingo Ah, I haven't counted the times when I took some peeks in one of the books of "Valerian et Laureline" (in German it's actually "Valerian und Veronique") at my comic shop, I'm always intrigued, but in the end I come to think, that it's a bit "Storm" for children (not that Storm can't be read by children too, but...). And "Sillage" looks interesting, to say the least, don't know why it hasn't got my attention yet, even though I think I am not the target audience for this one anymore, I am just too old :/ . Yeah, of course "Techno-Priests", thanks.

Very cool stuff. I'm starting to try to track down English language editions of some of these--it's a bit tricky. Most Moebius is out of print and the few older copies are very rare finds. I think most people over here only know Barberella from the Jane Fonda film...if all the original comics appeared here, I haven't seen them...maybe one volume appeared at some point, that I can recall seeing.

***** Humanoids published "Barbarella - the wrath of the minutes eater" earlier this year, but it's more than 30€ (for a bit over 150 pages, so I can't wholeheartedly recommend this (plus: I don't know if it's in color & somehow I think that this comic needs color)

Great video man, love your mention of what you recommend for first time readers. I am in total agreeance with you. You should hear how much I push The Incal & Metabatons onto people. I hope the Airtight Garage and Star Watcher by Moebius's gets released very soon in the US. Although maybe my German hasn't disappeared so much that I could indulge in a German version.

Good evening. I enjoyed viewing your wonderful collection. Even in German and French those books are hard to come by in the United States. I'm presently reading Before The Incal and enjoying it very much. Although I enjoyed the original Incal very much, I'm not as quite taken by it. I much prefer The Metabaron's, which reads like a Greek tragedy. When I first read it I thought about Jason and the Argonauts. As you probably know, Jason was joined by Theseus, Orpheus, Hercules, and at one point Medea, in his quest for the Golden Fleece. The story quest ends, but not the individual stories of Medea, Theseus, and the others. That was my impression when I read Metabarons, which I devoured over two nights. I didn't see any Crepax, Liberatore, or Manara. Crepax is one of my favorite storytellers. His Valentina stories are superb as are his adaptations of the Story of O, Dracula, and Emmanuel. Again, wonderful collection.

Gore Vidal thanks for your interesting insights and kind words.... yes, the Metabaron books are amazing and the analogy to Greek mythology is obviously quite there. I have quite a few Manara books, but nothing in the Scifi-vein.... so I have to tackle this later. As to Crepax: Maybe it's a misconception of mine, but I thought his stories would be more.... soft "porn" stuff, hence it was a bit out of my reach when I was a child and I never thought about hunting Crepax stuff down since.

yes, that video was not meant to be a real overview but more or less a random stack of euro scifi comics that I had at the time - if I remember correctly. I did some videos about euro scifi comics later on (just google "panellogy euro scifi") who are a bit more thorough. Cyann is great, I bought Orbital quite recently, haven't read it yet. Sillage is on my list. I tried to read Leo (Aldebaran) but his artstyle is not really my cup of tea... it's a pity, because the premise and scope of his scifi adventures is quite interesting. Maybe I should check out comics that he wrote but were drawn by Rodolphe?

Does the size of US comics, when reprinted in Europe remain the same? If so, do you think that makes them less appealing? I kind of wonder if the size difference has caused distribution of Euro comics problems over hear...totally conjecture.

***** There are quite a few of American comics that were reprinted in European format. For an example: I have an old Star Trek comic that looks quite ridiculous in the blown up format, because mediocre art doesn't look better when presented this way. Another example: the first two issues of "Nonplayer" will be published together in German as one oversized hardcover "Vol.1", which makes sense, because this art seems to deserve this treatment. But generally speaking: I think most of the American comics were and are published in "American" format over here (70% Disney, 25% Superhero, 5% ??? - estimations by the earl grey research inst.) Yeah and the other way round, I think you're right: it's an obvious problem for European comics that their usual format seems to be too expensive for the American market. Anyway, as far as I can see there is a bit of a trend over here to compose and draw comics in a smaller format than the traditional oversized.
@sleepyreader666
@sleepyreader666 9 жыл бұрын
I love an over-sized format; and Nonplayer definitely deserves that treatment. Along with the added expense, the core comic book collecting market here wants uniform size to fit in their long boxes--or so the retailers believe. perhaps a circular problem... Cheap Star Trek art blown up does sound a bit sad...

ha ha! "three hours later"! one way to watch this video is to open amazon.de and amazon.fr to see on sale there the books earl grey is so kindly sharing with us here. Barbarella of course is now in English edited and "adapted" by Kelly Sue Deconnick! many of the others are in English, and of course the Fantagraphics Jodelle is originally English. Humanoids the publisher offers the Metabarons and other stuff in English. another thing is to find the publisher of a book you like, and do a search in books auf Deutsch or en Francais for the PUBLISHER (e.g., Splitter-Verlag). you can really find some interesting stuff! thank you, earl grey!

Great collection and I must say the german editions are really good like french ones or almost. What's strange is that Enki Bilal is missing, i know that is 3 years ago but do you like him? His "Monstre" tetralogy is one of my favorite ever and even Nikopol is for me better than Incal. Cold stuff, eerie mood and more focused on politics than esoteric; a sort of believable future. I see you own the remake of Before the Incal, which I forgot that it was redrawn. Wow, I preferred the previous version by far. I can't stand digital coloring, it's really fake to my eyes, but sometimes it's good like in Techno-Priests. The final Incal done by Moebius is even worst, I mean the first book then remade by Ladronn. Maybe some one said it already but there is another cult from 70's-80's: Ranxerox. Drawn first in Italy by Liberatore then continued in France if I remember well. More european sci-fi comics that come to mind are the spanish ones like Fernando Fernandez "Zora and the Hibernauts"(just look at that arabesque goodness!), Segura and Ortiz's Hombre, Burton & Cyb, Alfonso Font's Tales of Imperfect Future, Clarke & Kubrick Spacialistes LTD, Prisoner of the Stars, Segura and Bernet's Kraken, etc. Maybe we should include also the argentinian's stuff done in their european days? Or maybe not, but Trillo and Altuna or Barreiro and Solano Lopez are the first ones to come in mind. A recent french sci-fi which is really good is Shangri-La by Mathieu Bablet. Another that reminds me of Schuiten's style is Bombyce Network by Cecil and Corberyan but nothing to do with Benoit's talent. Well, that's all for now.

(I subbed just in case :) ) as to the names & titles you're dropping: Bilal, yeah of course, I have and like his political satires... never got around to his future stuff though (for reasons unknown)... from the rest of your recommendations I have some (Fernandez, Barreiro), but most of the lot is still out there for me to discover. Thanks for your comments, keep them coming!

I'm not talky guy to do videos, you didn't have to subscrive, but w.e, who knows? Thank you, but I know very little of american comics, actually nothing from superheroes and the most known ones. Still I know Ware, Burns, Clowes, Crumb, Spiegelman, Mazzucchelli and their niche, for example the last pearl to come out is "My Favorite Thing is Monsters" recently published here too. So I'm actually enjoying videos of those who I know, but I'm also learning from you many more(just added Terminal City in my wishlist). So you have Bilal's works with Christin, great stuff still.

woah, how long did it take to write this comment? thank you and welcome in our nice little club of melancholic, nostalgic and most of all: damn' old sods.

Jared Osborn good luck with this initiative. While a good part of the important European comics is obviously available in English, there are some exceptions, that I don't get. Storm isn't really available in English for an instance - though I am pretty sure that it would be a surefire hit in the US. And even if some parts of "The Incal" and "The Metabarons" are available by humanoides, I think they should be always available on a more constant basis, and in cheaper editions as well.

I have a couple dozen European graphic albums from over the years. Not a ton of them but every ten years or so it seems some company tries to make a go of it publishing them over here. I think most of mine were published by Catalan or NBM. And of course Marvel published a lot of the Moebius stuff.
@earlgrey862
@earlgrey862 9 жыл бұрын
and maybe it's just me, but I got the impression that the amount of European comics is generally overestimated by Americans. The publication cycles are usually a lot slower over here.
@JaredOsborn
@JaredOsborn 9 жыл бұрын
I think that's because of the articles like the one I linked to before that say stuff like, "349 French comic publishers put out 5000 graphic novels in 2014, compared to 1500 graphic novels distributed in the U.S". That sounds like a lot more than over here but since a typical European Graphic novel (at least the ones I know) are published in 64 page books that really the equivalent of two or three US comics. Regular comics obviously aren't in that US 1500 number so the number is lower. I have no idea how comparable the real numbers are.
@earlgrey862
@earlgrey862 9 жыл бұрын
it's different to compare, I agree. Of course I have to admit that I have a limited view, because I just can refer to the comics, that are translated into German. But I think your second remark hits it: As we don't have this dominant monthly production cycle as in the US with "comic books" flooding the shelves each wednesday, it would really suprise me if the numbers were comparable. But maybe - I am still pondering over your statistics - I should plan a short vacation in France :)
