Good morning. I can't believe your collection. I though the Obscure Cities would be your number one pick, but Lone Sloane makes sense. You did sound like an American, or I dare say, a Texan when you talked about "your big book." Even the accent was right! I don't know what this means.

Those Hans volumes look awesome - i imagine they gather 4 albums each, no? I remember reading Hans way way back in Tintin magazine and i loved it. The Valerian editions also look very good (2 albums each volume?....) as well the b&w Moebius Opus, The Metabarons, Storm. Dam, I'm envious...

Lots in here I want to read, especially The Technopriests, Valerian, and the Obscure Cities series. I've read a few Druillet books but Titan keeps them coming so more there for me to catch up on! I absolutley loved Frederik Peeters' series Aama but it didn't crack the top 20 for you.

Interesting looking books there, nice art with some that looks familiar somehow, maybe they did something for Marvel's Epic magazine back in the day. I'm more of a superhero guy but these are nice to see for a change. I have/had (not sure now) some of them Moebius books but I wasn't that gripped by them.

Wow I admire your wonderful collection there ... and jealous .. Sometimes I feel the proper appreciation of such artistic books (especially the artworks) could be lessened due to poor color and graphic reproductions in the print quality... I recently got a chance to see Loan Sloane in my non-European country and was slightly underwheled by the color and print quality, and did not buy it due to that... now looking at the same comics printed differenly in your collection, they look a lot more beautiful than what I saw .... the same thing happened with Moebius's Incal ... I really hope they do a better job of reproducing these legendary graphic novels ...

On a science fiction note, I must recommend a British offering i've just finished reading by Anna Mill & Luke Jones: 'Square Eyes' (if you haven't already). some of the most stunning artwork i've come across (but with a maybe some convoluted story/dialogue). A few random comments: and one question 1) I was going to make a stupid comment about what comics you left out but realized a) these are your personal (and excellent) choices b) there are so many good sci-fi european comics out there .... c) some of the other comics i would have included are actually only half good. For instance i like Bilal but i find his drawings superior to his storytelling skills or Aldebaran which in my opinion is an amazing series but Leo's drawing skills are mediocre. 2) You are right not to include Thorgal. You should do a separate list on fantasy and include La complainte des landes perdues and maybe la quête de L'oiseau du temps. 3) you made a lot of excellent observations. In particular your comment about Mézières cartoonish drawings not being a good mix with Science fiction for Valerian and Laureline . I have a problem with Orbital for the exact same reason. And on a similar note i hate the mix of Horror and humor because they tend neutralize each other. 4) there is only one thing you said i disagree with: I actually appreciate the continuity in the Marvel or DC universe. No need to justify yourself : As a North American comic enthusiast I find this a very refreshing opinion and i totally understand where your point. 5) am always surprised how many french comics make it to Germany. I had no idea Hans had been translated to German. Now the question. English publishers have a bad habit of censoring nudity and sex when translating french comics. It happened with Barracuda or Aldebaran and countless other comics. Do you have the same problem with German translations?
@earlgrey862

1) yes... the first estimation is of course: have I bought it or not... and it's exactly Leo's art that kept me from buying his series (and a lot of other series ... which can be a mistake sometimes, so I haven't picked up Valerian for a long time since the art had not the instant "buy me appeal". 2) oh, I have another list in my mind... hope it will make sense & you can approve ;) 4) so my mild provocation has not failed :) 5) not that I know of... usually some books are displayed far off the "kids" book section (and rightfully so). But that's it. Actually some publishers would like their books to be censored, I guess, because it's the cheapest and best way to make your books well known.

I don't need to say it is pretty much an excellent if not the best sci-fi comics' list I've ever seen, even forgiving the lack of Bilal, but I must say that you surprised me with Hans, I would have never thought of it in a top 10. For me it's far behind, it has good ideas in the beginning but overall a bit naive and it's not that old. Anyway I must admit that it's not only for the story but also for Rosinski's art. Yeah, I'm not a fan of Rosinski. I didn't like him that much in Thorgal and when I've read Hans in b/w (because we have a shrunken down and b&w version of it), that's where I could see even more his "limits", at least for me, infact I thought that even Kas was doing a better work on Hans. Though in color Kas seems less compelling. The idea was reinforced when I've read Dufaux's Lament of Lost Moors, where Rosinski did the first cycle, then Delaby the second, which had a greater graphic force, then the 3rd cycle by Tillier, which was even better. I don't seem to understand Rosinski's sketchy linework, even if I love Druillet and he also has a non-realistic sketchy and grossy style. Oh, yeah, since we're talking about Rosinski and the one who you put just after Moebius and Hermann, I can also say that Moebius isn't the number one in my ideal ranking. Schuiten, Hermann, Gimenez and of course Druillet, just to say the ones named in this video, are above him. If I look at their carreer they are always at their best, more or less, Moebius hasn't done always stuffs on the level of The Airtight Garage, Incal, Edena and some more. Also, Moebius as comic artist has done very little with colour, most of his works were coloured by others. Just look at Gimenez and his use of harmonic colours that are "readable", it grants a flow between vignettes. Well, Hermann too is just another planet with colour, even Schuiten of course. Moebius, on the other hand, was above them all as an illustrator, well the fight is between him and Schuiten only. I don't know who I prefer, I switch every day. Moebius had lots of styles and that can be an advantage, depending on the result. Le Garage Hermetique remains a compendium on how to draw and thanks God no one coloured it and Moebius is of course the most important of the lot (though Giraud became Moebius mainly thanks to Druillet, the one that really started a revolution with the medium expressiveness). Druillet can not be copied and who is able to do so is going into plagiarism since Druillet is too personal (like Sergio Toppi, who is higher than Druillet in my list :P), unlike Moebius that was highly influencial because other artist could easily steal from him. Obviously them all are in my top 10 and there is very little difference between them. Of course the ranking stuff is just for fun. Infact I like ranking artists and their works but it's nothing serious. I love Moebius if it's not clear, but I don't like the fact that his rockstar charisma obscures most, if not all, european artists to the eyes of US. Moebius can be considered the greatest, expecially if we look at his influence, I won't argue (though I don't think it's possible to go over a true revolutionary like A. Breccia), if not for fun, but he is quoted everywhere. It gets annoying. Don't you have the same impression? Oh, while I can see the common elements between Druillet and Kirby, I must add that if someone likes Kirby doesn't mean they will love Druillet. They are too distant and Druillet delivers extreme layouts not just splash pages with cosmic stuffs. Druillet is the architect of the universe, I don't remember who said it but he was right. Yes, we share the number one in this list, as you may have guessed! Alright, you surprised me also with Storm's position, I thought it would have been at number 10. I love Don Lawrence but the script ain't on the same level. I was sure about the 1st place. I already knew that german edition were just another planet, but after seeing all these together, pieces with fantastic art and thinking about italian's shrunked editions really sucks. Incal, Valerian, Hans, Barbarella, the Airtight are all at maximum 19x26. Metabarons is like yours and also Schuiten, Storm was dropped after the 2nd but was ok, while Jeremiah is very unfortunate here. I also have the first 3 integrals of Jeremiah and they were based on the US edition, which stopped publishing them, and if you believe that they are small, just think that it was also published in a Dylan Dog format. No words. I also have some that are bigger than french edition, at least I can look at it in his full splendor. Jeremiah is actually at 37th, it will come out soon. Hermann is still great, but he is getting old. Still writes better than his son. Enough talking, I'm adding some euro sci-fi names that I have in high consideration as recommendation. In order from the best, skipping the ones you've already said and the ultra known stuffs like Bilal's. Will also say if they are published or not in english. Just to say, the 1st is my actual number 9 of my top (not fave) 10. Here: *Brian the Brain - Miguel Angel Martin - maybe not translated but it's a shame. I haven't found a better spanish comic than this one. *Luther Arkwright - Talbot *I Briganti - Magnus - (yes, always Magnus!) not translated in eng I believe *Castle of the Stars - Alex Alice - translated by First Second *Custer - Bernet and Trillo - Truman Show years before and much more intelligent in my opinion. Translated, maybe years ago, NBM?I don't remember *Souvenirs de l'empire de l'atome - Clarisse and Smolderen - maybe not translated yet. One shot btw *Le Monde d'Arkadi - Caza. God, Caza ... and to think that he is forgotten and limited to be a Moebius' clone. What a shame since he was doing madness before Gir came to be Moebius. Anyhow it wasn't fully translated in english or maybe only on Heavy Metal *Aama - Frederik Peeters - just great. Influenced by Moebius, ofc course. Translated *Zora and the Hibernauts - Fernando Fernandez *Arkhé - Caza - the only one that comes close to Druillet cosmic feeling, I mean a story from not a human point of view, let's say like Lovecraft's horror. Caza is different though, because he has a very poetic writing and philosophical too, but at the same time his stories are truly angsty. *Kris Kool - Caza - sci-fi psychedelic pop published by the same editor of Barbarella but way over the top. Great publisher/editor that was far from conventional stuffs and did it for art's sake. Like Kris Kool there is Saga de Xam, but I haven't read since it's the Holy Grail of comics ... oh, Kris Kool too but not anymore for italian market. They weren't reprinted even in France for decades. Just to say, Jeremiah in my ranking comes here and under it Gillon's Castaways, which means around 30-40 because I've skipped some. Well, since it's a series I look at the whole series and from 25 or so on it began to fall. *Ranxerox - Liberatore and Tamburini - here we go, like I said for Jeremiah the same goes for Ranxerox. Liberatore did the last tome in France and it was nowhere close to the 2/3 written by the deceased Tamburini. If I had to consider only Tamburini + Liberatore it was in top 20. Do you know Ranxerox? For sure it was on Heavy Metal from '83. Totally punk, before cyberpunk started there was already Ranxerox. Underground sci-fi + Metal Hurlat? Yeah, but after the 1st "tome", which was also underground in art, then came Liberatore to draw, paint it. It will be published in english by Heavy Metal(?). It is a must. *The Forever War - Marvano and Haldeman - written not only adapted by Haldeman from his homonymous novel. It's really one of my favourites, though the art is not fantastic or it would have been really high. Published long ago by NBM *Interview - Manuele Fior - published by fantagraphics I think. It's a graphic novel that has scifi elements and mood. *The Age of Darkness - Caza - see Arkhè - Idk if Caza has ever seen an english volume, but maybe you've read him on Schwermetall. *Pirate Spaceship - Crepax - if it hasn't already, it will be published of course *Milady in 3000 - Magnus - not translated in eng *Koma - Frederik Peeters and Wazem - published by Humanoids *Aldebaran - Leo - Cinebook? If Cinebook it has censorship... *Unathorized Happiness - Griffo and Van Hamme - I'm sure that it 's being published in eng right now, not sure if only in digital though, but I think you have it in german. This is the best Van Hamme work for me, I mean if I just look at his script, but Griffo is here a 7/10 to say in numbers. The guy on Vlad was a bit better though. Also Les Maitres de l'Orge is great, but Valles is like Griffo. In the end? XIII is the best in my opinion even with his flaws here and there on the script, but at least it has Vance. *Clarke and Kubrick Spacialists LTD - Alfonso Font - amazing, so funny, really love this title. If it was a personal list it would go into top 10. Don't remember if it was published, think so, but for sure SAF Comics is doing Alfonso Font's stuffs. *Lupus - Federik Peetrs- will be published in december by the same publisher of Aama *Shangri- La - Mathieu Bablet - published but maybe only in digital In my excel I'm still at 8.5/10. I'm stopping here, because it would have been infinite. Forgot to say, Jeff Hawke is british, you consider it EU? Have you read this classic strip? Next step adventure or fantasy?

So a small note regarding pronounciation of the name Grzegorz. RZ in Polish sounds roughly like J in French. Not sure how to explain the pronounciation of the S in Rosinski but it's less like a Z... it's more like hmm... okay, compare the way you put your tongue when making an SSSS sound and an SHHH sound, it's sorta inbetween and a little more "whistly" sounding? Can't really explain any better :D Also, a tiny anecdte regarding Hans, he was published as Yans in Polish due to there being a character named Hans Kloss based off of a 60's tv show "Stawka większa niż życie" about a Polish secret agent going undercover as a nazi officer during WW2. So they changed the first letter of his name. Also also, Kaz is a nickname, his full last name is Zbigniew Kasprzak (again rz pronounced a bit like French j) but he shortened it for easier pronounciation, same with Graza, his wife (real name Grażyna Foltyn-Kasprzak, the ż letter is pronounced same as rz) who did colors on some Yans and Thorgal volumes. Also also also, pretty good list, I agree with every title on the list except Jeremiah I have no opinion on cause I'm not that familiar with it and it looked too westerny to pick it up.
@earlgrey862

interesting to know why they changed the title in Poland... as to my pronounciations: uh - not my forté anyhow, but sometimes I go on Leo.org where you can get soundbytes for every word even in Polish, so maybe I should try that one to get a "feel for the Polish tongue".

Barbarella is one series whose accolades I never understood. I'm not a prude, and the movie was fine. But the comic book series just never caught my attention. Which is funny because I love things like Snake, Betty by Night/Clara After Dark and Sarvane. Also, the Airtight Garage, really? I understand the Moebius Opus, I'd even understand you saying that Airtight Garage is the best part of the Moebius Opus, but just the Airtight Garage? it is just a proto Incal. Edena at the very least is him moving beyond the Incal and trying to make his own.
@earlgrey862

The two part series "The long tomorrow" is a proto-Incal in my opinion ... but the Airtight Garage? As to Barbarella: for me it's this colored version that makes me tick ... a black & white or even duotone-version wouldn't make it into my top ten. But in any case I see and appreciate it as some adult fairy tale...
