Pastels helped me get a grip on values. I started with pencil and hit a point where I didn't develop my skills further. Started using pastels and it's so much easier to express light. Anyone on the edge of getting pastels, just try them. Awesome video and great art.

I love blending newer products, like the pan pastels, with the Traditional pastel sticks. Besides Rembrandts, i invested in Sonnielier, and handmade traditionals, which lay like butter, and such beautiful color. Great vid! I really enjoyed your instruction that included how color works, and your use of classical color names, and drawing vocabulary. I always work with color wheels nearby, and even drew up some of my own favorite color schemes. Enjoy the music along with the instruction!

Matt, two questions...how do you mix colors in the PanPastels without contaminating each of them? Also, when using the soft pastels in the foreground, are you smudging with you fingers?

J'aime beaucoup cette technique et votre paysage est superbe ! Par contre, je ne sais pas quel papier vous utilisez (pastel card ou pastel mat ?) et si l'on doit nettoyer ou jeter les éponges après un seul usage ? Fixez-vous votre peinture ? Merci pour ce tutoriel. Amicalement

Bonjour Micha. Pour le papier c'est Canson mi teintes spécial pastel. Il est préférable d'utiliser un outil/éponge pour les couleurs claires, et un autre outil/éponge pour les couleurs foncées. Si vous ne voulez pas mélanger les couleurs, il suffit de frotter délicatement un papier Sopalin de droite à gauche pour retirer la couleur. Les éponges s'utilisent donc jusqu'à usure complète. Il ne faut pas appuyer trop lors de l'application du PanPastel. Vous pouvez les faire tremper dans un peu de lessive douce, ou du savon de temps en temps si elles sont trop saturées de couleurs.

Hi Jolene, For most of my pastel drawings, I use Canson Mi Teintes pastel paper.

When you mention "traditional pastels", what do you mean? Are they oil pastels, or some other form?

Great tutorial, but the piano background is too overwhelming and makes listening to your instructions difficult. Either turn the piano down or - better - get rid of it completely, please!

since you are right handed, please have the camera show your work from a left angle, to show what you are doing. the had is always in the way and you don't see the actual work until it's already done. Otherwise, beautiful work
