A quick panning test with the Manfrotto 410 Jr geared head. The skeleton was shot with a Canon 40d, the dial of the geared head was shot with a Nikon D50 at the same time so you can see how much of a turn was done. The skeleton was 12" from the focal plane (about 8" from the front of the lens) so it goes by pretty fast. Full speed was i/24th of a rotation, and it should have had a slower ramp-up to speed.
