I visited the Pantheon in May. It was spectacular. It was free but I would gladly pay an entrance fee to keep this world treasure maintained for another two thousand years.

I agree too. It is for the largest part still in the state as emperor Hadrian had it build around 125 AD! Except that the statues are replaced. But all the marble decorations stem from Roman time. A unique monument from Antiquity. ❤

Thanks for the great content as always! I was there July 6th mid afternoon and glad I got the tickets online as the lines for both credit card and cash were really long. Definitely glad I discovered I could use PayPal as I tried multiple times with different American CC and could not buy. Got one free pass on the site for my son who was under 18 as well. Absolutely worth paying the fee as the Pantheon is quite amazing to behold in person and glad to contribute to the upkeep!

Great video as always. Looks like I just missed you. We tried to buy tix online (on a pc) for Sat (when you were there) and wouldnt accept my credit card. PayPal was NOT an option on the site unfortunately. So, we went Sat afternoon to try again. I scanned the QR code at the entrance which took me to the same govt website which, again, wouldnt accept my visa and no paypal option. The payment issue was REALLY frustrating and there were dozens of people near me cussing at their phones as they had the same problem. So, at 5pm we decided to stand in the blazing sun to pay CASH for tix. After 15 mins in line we were told it was too late and they closed the line due to high volume of visitors ahead of us (they close at 630pm). Since we only had one more day I bit the bullet and paid 45 Euros (x3) for a skip the line guided tour the next day (today). Frankly, your videos were more informative than the guide and it was a waste of money but the Pantheon itself is amazing. I'm sure they'll get it sorted out soon, but it was very frustrating. PS - we had other bookings every morning so that messed us up. Follow Elyssa's advise and GET THERE EARLY!
@Romewise
@Romewise 11 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for sharing your experience! I'm sorry it was so frustrating and difficult. I know many people have been through similar experiences with this new system. The PayPal option isn't evident because when you reach the payment page, it's in Italian, so you'd have to know that the third option is "altri metodi" which means other methods and when you click that, it does take you to the page where you can pay with PayPal. I even showed this in this video because I know it's not clear especially if you don't speak Italian. Anyway I am glad you got to see the Pantheon. Thank you for your kind words. I am grateful to you for watching my videos and for taking the time to comment and to let me know you find my content helpful!

I love and appreciate your videos. We are visiting end of the month. So much to learn! Question - I see both men and women with short shorts and skirts (exposed knees) as well as tank tops and spaghetti straps (uncovered shoulders). Are they not heavily enforcing the church dress code? Are men and women allowed to wear shorts then? Thank you!! :)
@Romewise
@Romewise Ай бұрын
Thanks so much! Yes, as I've mentioned to others who have made similar comments on this video. there is indeed a dress code however, they do not have the same ability as the Vatican to have staff patrolling on the inside. Many people cover up just to get inside and once inside, they remove whatever is making them hot. But the bottom line is that the Pantheon is a church and does have a dress code.

Great video and we love all of your work - it's been super helpful for planning. We plan to come for Pentecost this year (2024) and I'm not sure what the best way to do that. I want to actually attend Mass at 10:30 for the fall of rose petals. The tickets are not yet available on museiitaliani. I've heard about coming in as a pilgrim and not necessarily a tourist. What is the best way to do this? Thank you.
@Romewise
@Romewise 2 ай бұрын
There is no way to reserve for the Pentecost inside the Pantheon, unless you know some clergy who work there. For those wanting to attend Mass, you'll need to get there that morning by about 7AM. By 8AM the queue will already be extremely long. Space is limited so they won't allow everyone in. This has become an extremely hot thing to do since it's been well-publicized on social media for the past several years. Most people come for the rose petals and the only way to see that is to attend Mass. And the only way to attend Mass is to come and wait in line.

Very informative video. Thank you. I noticed many people in the background with bare shoulders and shorts. Are they lenient about that? We will be arriving in Rome August 15th and definitely plan to see the Pantheon no matter the cost.
@Romewise
@Romewise 10 ай бұрын
Thank you for telling me you find my video useful. I hope you will have a wonderful time when you visit Rome this August. As for the way people are dressed: Basically the rules are that in any church or other holy site (churches, mosques, synagogues, catacombs, etc), visitors are required to dress modestly which means having covered knees and covered shoulders. For the most part I have seen that people wearing shorts or dresses that come to just above the knee are being allowed in to churches where there is someone checking this, including at Saint Peter's basilica. However, it is not always the case as this depends on the person doing the checking. To be absolutely sure you will not be turned away, I would recommend wearing something that covers your shoulders (even a scarf you can use just temporarily), and having covered knees. Lightweight linen pants or a long skirt are a great option and also protect your legs from the heat and sun. So that is the rule. Then, you will find that many people choose to flout this rule if they think they can "get away with it", meaning, in the case of the Pantheon, that once inside, they might remove whatever they were using to cover up. This is because there are not enough staff to stay on top of this as there are at the Vatican. So the rule is what it is, and then there are those who choose to go against the rules and they can often do so if there are not enough people to let them know they have to stay covered up while inside. Debate about this can get very heated, but I am just here to tell you what I have seen over the years.

I just tried to buy online with my credit card for next week, but the transaction was declined. I'm on my mac and was able to select "other payment" and choose PayPal, which goes through an Italian payment system with a different name but it's clearly marked PayPal as well. The transaction fee was a bit higher (1.50 vs 0.45), but it worked and I got my confirmed tickets via email. Thanks for the info!
@Romewise
@Romewise 11 ай бұрын
Yes that is what is happening right now. I do hope they will sort this out soon. I can tell you the system to purchase tickets went live on the day they started charging an entry fee, i.e. July 3. So I think they just got it ready enough, but perhaps now they can work out this issue, especially as most people will likely not be using an Italian credit card for entry. Glad it worked out for you!

Glad to have cleared up any confusion! You can usually find people selling tickets and tours around the Colosseum, however, I don't recommend this, as you don't know what kind of tour your getting. I would always book in advance. Even at the Pantheon, I have been approached by people selling tours. I can see they are not licensed guides. Again, I would go with a licensed guide and book in advance.

They did this during Covid. At first it made sense as they were trying to keep people from congregating. And it's stayed this way and I actually like it because you can see the floor. I'm glad you were able to visit. Yes, their audioguide is quite good. The water in Rome comes from the mountains over the aqueducts - yes the same aqueducts used in Ancient Rome (almost). You can learn more about this here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h8WFrZmAppaUYJs.html The drains inside the Pantheon are the same ones used when it was originally built.

Do you think it will be very busy in the mid of March? I’m not sure what time I will reach Pantheon so don’t want to buy a ticket in advance. I will be visiting on a Thursday morning. I’m from India so no stranger to a little bit of a crowd. TIA.

Will be visiting the Pantheon even with the charge. It's not too expensive and if it helps to pay towards the upkeep of the building, I don't think this is too much to ask. Your video has useful information about how to buy tickets which is great! I'll definitely be buying them online. Btw, I have been reading your blog, which has also been really useful. I notice that you mention in one of your other videos that the short cut is available for St Peter's Basilica from the Vatican Museums. I have booked an official guided tour of the museums and not the Basilica, is it still the case that you can only do the short cut if your tour includes the Basilica? Many thanks for your videos, I'm really enjoying watching them.
@Romewise

Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I'm glad you find my video useful. Thank you also for reading my website. Just so you know, as of August 17, 2023, they changed the rules at the Vatican museums once again and it is NO LONGER possible to take the shortcut from the Sistine Chapel to Saint Peter's Basilica unless you are on a tour. And even if you are on a tour, that tour's description must include a visit to the basilica or you will also not be able to take the shortcut. So it sounds like the tour you booked doesn't include the basilica and you will have to go back to the exit of the Vatican Museums (same place you entered) and walk all the way around the walls to Saint Peter's Square.

I've got another question that I feel only you would know: How can we visit our beloved Saint Paul's tomb to take his blessing? Is there a special ticketing process? Thank you so much Mike and Carrie for your lovely comments. I'm so glad you enjoy my videos. I would also be happy to make a video about the Basilica of Saint Paul. You can easily visit this basilica and visit his burial spot inside the basilica. There is a special place just under the canopy and you can access it freely to see his tomb. The basilica is free so all you have to do is visit it, go inside, and make your way to the front. It's really special. I also recommend you visit the cloister, and do NOT miss the nearby Abbey of the Three Fountains where Saint Paul met his fate. The 3 fountains are said to have sprung up where his head hit the ground in 3 spots. It's a truly special place to visit. @jayholland3768 The Vatican does have a strict dress code, although it does not apply to the museums at all, except for when you enter the Sistine Chapel. The dress code also applies to Saint Peter's basilica. The dress code is more enforced at the Vatican because they have the staff to enforce it. At the Pantheon, which is also a church and which also has a dress code, they just don't have the staff to enforce it the way the Vatican does. So people are told to cover up to enter, and then often, once inside they remove those coverups.

In Italy, the general rule for visiting churches or any holy site is to have covered knees and covered shoulders. However, not all churches have the amount of staff they have at the Vatican and so sometimes they can only do so much. For the most part, the staff at the front seem mostly concerned with making people cover their shoulders. So I see people going in with covered shoulders and then removing that cover once inside. It's basically on an honor system. They just don't have the staff to walk around ask ask people to cover back up.

@Romewise
@Romewise 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting on my video. As for the way people are dressed: Basically the rules are that in any church or other holy site in Italy (churches, mosques, synagogues, catacombs, etc), visitors are required to dress modestly which means having covered knees and covered shoulders.

What on earth are you all talking about? There’s no fee to enter. Just stand in the line and eventually you will get it. I was with a tour group and we didn’t skip the line. So I have no idea what fees you are talking about. And I was just there barely two weeks ago.

And there is a fee. This is a new video where she is debuting the new system.

Yes, as I mention in the video, as of July 3, there is a fee to enter. It sounds like you were here right before they implemented the fee.

This is absurd. One of the easiest churches to enter because of the wide entry way. Now, you have to pay to enter. It's not worth 5 euros in my opinion. I like the dome with the hole in it. That's cool. There's not much else. Paying 5 euros to climb to the top of the leaning Asinelli tower in Bologna? Now that's worth 5 euros. But, as far as Rome churches go, check out San Giovanni in Laterano. It's Rome's best church and it's free! Like all the churches in Rome (except for the Pantheon).

It's true that as of now, the Pantheon is the only church in Rome with a fee, however, if you visit it as a church (i.e. to attend Mass), then it remains free. They are charging a fee because most people visit it as a monument. Quite a few churches across Italy charge an entry fee. For example Santa Maria Novella, San Lorenzo, and Santa Croce in Florence all charge a fee, unless you enter to attend a liturgical service or are one of their parishioners. But I know many people are not happy with this new fee at the Pantheon, and you are right, there are many other churches and monuments to see in Rome! San Giovanni in Laterano is one of my favorites!

I believe you don’t understand the importance of the pantheon . Do you have USA schooling? Just to see the house of Savoy kings and queens tombs ,Raphael resting place , your five euros are not enough. When you go back to the states , go to Las Vegas and park your car in the casinos garage and you will pay much more. I can tell you much more about your country but I will abstain commenting to this subject any further because is useless.😢😢
