Paper negatives practice - Contrast control using filters

In this video, I investigate how paper negative contrast can be controlled through the use of filters. I read that yellow filter can be used to reduce the contrast but I have neve try it with paper negatives before. I decided to also try the Ilford Multigrade Contrast filter.

About me:

Thanks for sharing i have been taking paper negs for 40+ years and the best results i have ever had is a Yellow/Green filter and add 2 stops. If you have one try it you will not be disappointed .

Thanks for the tip. Will try for some landscape shots. For portrait I try to get a faster shutter speed like one second so that the subject won't be too blur compared to say 4 secs

Ilford also makes a 6x6" filter set for multigrade papers that goes in the filter slots of 4x5 enlargers and that set contains a "00" filter for even more contrast control that you might want to experiment with.

A bit of unsolicited advice: it's a good practice to not expose your paper to light until after its fixed. In the video you only have it in the developer. You may be doing this because these are just tests, but I figured I may post this in case someone new to printing sees this and thinks its ok

Yes of course. The paper will be developed and fixed before the box is open. Otherwise U will see the paper being fogged fast.

you can try to preflash the paper. cover the lens with a a tissue paper and close down 3 stops and take a shot. then take the actual shot. one of my recent video shows that too.
