A review of the EDC 1991 "Professional" Survival Kit. I picked this up for about $10 on Amazon. Enjoy!

One reason I like your reviews is that you see the value in even the cheapy little items that are better than nothing. I see too many reviewers who lose their minds over a button compass or anything less than a $300 knife is junk and you shouldn't even have it. Quality stuff is great and all but if all I had was this little Altoid tin kit then I'm still better off than not.

I've used the inner strands of paracord to sew up a few things. It works surprisingly well as thread.

Great job. You could wrap the paracord around the tin and use the carabiner to attach to your pack or belt loop. If there is room I always fill any voids with cotton balls to prevent rattling and provide a couple extra pieces of tinder. You can never have enough tinder.

Great vid! I would have sealed the ends of the plastic tube that the duct tape was wrapped around and put a few extra needles in there and taken the other 5’ length of paracord and wrapped it around the outside and made a loop for the carabiner . I really enjoy these vids!

I suspect they are called grenade kits is because the container "explodes" it's contents out when it's opened. Also you can only activate them once.

How do you attach those type of floats to the fishing line. I found the best way to use that cotton tinder is to hold the 2 ends and twist back-and-forth until it pulls apart

Some of the fishing components can also be used for trapping.

I would have added a space blanket under the tin, held on by the ranger band.

You didn't have to "sacrifice" the extra Paracord and carabeaner. Wrap the Paracord on the outside and attach the carabeaner. Boom.

Many of these grenade-style kits would benefit so much, from a carry bag inside. Could always use the plastic package, I guess.

I wish I could master weaving paracord. I have a sick idea for one of these kits but I just can't get the weaving thing down

Did you know you could wrap the extra Paracord on the outside of the tin?

I enjoy your content. Thank you. I think you could have wrapped the discarded paracord around the tin UNDER the ranger band and used the carabiner with it to make it clipable to the outside of your bag or wherever...

You can remove the inner threads of the Paracord and use that as sewing thread with the needle. It's Paracord basics 101. bot as a stand alone kit it's kind of lacking but if you combine it with an EDC kit. It adds much to that kind of setup. That is basically what this kind of kit was made for. Also the I knife has a serrated striking surface on the "O" part of the blade. Aslo with a needle, you can lance a blister if you should happen to get one.

Heavy duty foil works best. More strength and less likely to tear or rip.

I like what you do. But that original kit won't do much. But what can you really get in such small kits. Small kits should aid your real kit.

I don't think food is one of the "four essentials" for survival, at least short term. True, you'll die without food but it will take between 1 month to 1 year depending on your body composition. People that die while hiking, hunting, fishing and backpacking usually die from mechanical injury (mostly falls), exposure (usually hypothermia but sometimes hyperthermia) or dehydration. So you'll only starve if you actually manage to avoid dying of something else for a month or two. Absolutely I see buying, building and reviewing survival kits as a worthwhile hobby and a lot of fun, but if we peel back the entertainment layer and drill down into what you really need to stay alive we begin to see kits differently. Most of the stuff in that kit is potentially nice to have but few items address immediate survival needs. Fishing can pass the time and feed you but in the first few hours of a survival situation it's a dangerous waste of time. True, you can use the fishing line for sewing but often does your life hinge on being able to sew something? Water tablets are great to have but what will you collect water in? Have you ever tried to fashion grocery store tinfoil into a water container? Try it just for kicks! It can be done but it's extremely fragile and unstable, hard to move and drink out of. And how will you guess where on your "pot" the 1 liter mark is? Cordage is very hard to replicate in the woods from scratch. More is better than less but 5' is probably enough to useful About the only value that kit has, IMO, is entertainment value. But if you had a lighter, belt knife, multi-tool and canteen already on your person those extra items could be nice to have.

The inner string of the paracord contains the thread. I take it you don’t actually USE the kits you review. Your hands tell a lot about a person...

Have I ever been in a life or death survival situation where I needed to use one of these kits? Fortunately, no. Have I ever tested survival kits? Yes. I do plan on making some kit test videos in the future.
