Flybubble Paragliding explains how to control the power during a standard reverse-launch on a paraglider in strong wind. Demonstrated on a high-performance Icepeak 6 in gusty winds of 25-30km/h at ground level. This technique works on all wings regardless of the rigging.

Agreed: the differences between good and poor launch technique can be subtle i.e. correct timing and small movements. You can get often away with poor technique in moderate wind, less often so in strong wind - and usually with far worse consequences!

Desculpe falar em Português (Brasil), mas agradeço pela aula. Comecei a fazer da maneira que foi explicada e nunca mais tive problemas. Excelentes dicas. Obrigado. Google translator, hehehehe Sorry speak in Portuguese (Brazil), but thank you for the lesson. I started doing the way it was explained and never had problems. Great tips. Thank you.

Hi Greg, yes keep making the videos cos they're great! Its a bit like Strictly judging in that the quality of the videos is so good we just have to be picky about minor stuff !! :) There's plenty music options there...plus for really easy access you can also use youtube audiolibrary which is also searchable by video duration (although not as much choice)

Nice video, but I prefer to demonstrate control over the wing BEFORE turning around. Turning around simply because the wing is reaching the apex leaves room for error, especially on a launch with limited space. Demonstrating dominance and control of the wing with A and C/D risers before turning is much safer in my opinion. Also, if you sit down hard in the harness and stand up as the wing is rising, you won't have to run so far. Good for small launches.

hmmm, wrapping the brake could produce a lot of lift when the wing comes up. A+C ist better. you can also just pull the inner "A"s or even bring the wing up with ears to reduce the lift in strong conditions.

the icepeak has a trim speed of around 39km/h so that gives me 9-14km/h forward motion. I stay low in this video. A few times I got lifted up and went backwards.

I'm trying to improve my technique of launching in 25-30 km/h winds; your video is nice but could you show us the A/C technique as well ? I like your video, but for a beginner like me, the differences are toos subtle - (maybe a camera on your helmet so that we could see your hands working ?). Anyway I understood that we have to gently walk (or "run") towards the glider to kill its strength...).

@airiemerlin123
@airiemerlin123 10 жыл бұрын
***** sorry mate, but the wind at wing height is at least 5 km/h less than your estimate. That, and the fact that the slope is quite flat makes it a perfect ground handling spot. Nice hips control there. ;) I prefer the A&C riser technique for windy conditions. Much more directional control when pulling the glider up and less drag. Besides that I almost always lean back when pulling the glider up until the 45º power zone. Only then do I run under the glider. Saves me a couple of meters of running, which can be crucial when I'm on a tight launch unlike the place you are using for your demo. But if one keeps pulling past the power zone then what happens is what you show in the video. Not because of one leaning back. P.S. I fly the IP6 myself...
@airiemerlin123
@airiemerlin123 10 жыл бұрын
***** I don't get how using A+C risers would give you less directional control than not using rear risers at all. You must either be joking or not understand the use of A+C technique at all. When holding only A risers to pull the glider up you have no directional control at all but the one in your hips. Some (although) limited directional control by using C or D risers is better than none. And If I need more I can always let go and use brakes, same as you do. But in the process of picking the glider up from the ground and getting it through the "power zone" I have a number of options more than if I'm only on brakes. One of the main ones is being able to kill the glider without being dragged, which is the most likely scenario if things go pear shape in really strong wind when using only brakes and the other one being faster and more controlled lifting of the glider through the power zone. ;)

well we "old men" find that electro/syntho/mechanico/fakeo, sounding noise to be JARRING. thats the sound we hear in our heads while being nagged to death by a pernicious blatherskite. like so much cheap entertainment nowadays, that noise is ment to shock a simpleminded dolt into engagement through morbid curiosity. a cheap attempt at sounding substantial. like so much roadkill, a cretin will be forced to look at it even though it is objectionable.
