This song was written in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian war and Paris Commune, by Émile Deureux, mocking the bourgeois who wanted to surrender France for such cheap prices as a beefsteak, rather than fighting on for their country.

I have to contradict the description: actual History was upside down. French loss in the Franco-Prussian War brought to a brief yet very bloody civil war in France, which touched its harshest moment in the siege and fall of the Commune of Paris. After the Prussian victory at Sedan, emperor Napoleon III (the nephew of the most famous one) was captured by the enemy and France was remade as a republic. The civil war started immediately over two different positions: whether to continue the war against Prussia or surrender right there, and how to direct the social policy of the new State. The rural majority of the country demanded an immediate surrender and called for peace, while cities and intellectuals wanted to pursue the fight and retake the regions of Alsace and Lorraine bequeathed to Prussians. Paris rioted and for a while became a self administering State, crafting a really progressive legislation for workers, enhancing rights and trying to establish a really inclusive republic, where everyone could have a part in the government instead of the top bourgeoisie. The Commune was besieged by both Prussians and French-loyalists and fell in a bloody sack. The song is mocking how the great bourgeois of the country preferred bargaining with an invading enemy rather than take some sacrifices for their homeland. In the lyrics are named some of the most influential members of the government, like Thièrs, Favre and Trochu, who actively worked with Bismark in order to subdue Paris and cancel the progressive legislation. The refrain points out: while real patriots struggled and starved, French government sold Paris (to the invading Prussians) for the price of a mere beef-steak

I have to correct you on one point, there wasn`t such a blatant social economic split between the side that wanted to pursue the war or stop it. What happened is that after the battle of Sedan Napoleon 3 was encircled and taken as prisoner by the Prussians. That left a power vacuum in France, Léon Gambetta a long time opponent of Napoleon 3 proclaims then in a rush the 3rd Republic in Paris. He did so because he was able to compromise with the elites already open to liberal ideas. Because (believe it or not) the second half of the Third Empire was pretty liberal and exempt of anti democratic crackdowns and many institutions were democratic (in appearance at least). Fast forward, Gambetta wishes to continue the war and flees Paris in an attempt of raising popular support in France but ultimately fails and has to compromise with Prussia. Paris in the meantime is recovering from a bloody siege and food shortages are still important, Paris is also home of the first revolution and harbors many republicans which carry the legacy of 1789 furthermore Paris is home to many workers that face heavy work conditions and lack of decent housing. This all creates the perfect storm for the creation of the Commune of Paris. When the first legislatives elections come, Paris refuses to recognize the results and secedes. The commune is often called the first communist state in history so its not to hard to see what policies they were seeking and ofc they didnt recognize neither the Prussian victory. Alone with no further national support they soon fall as you said against the republican and Prussian forces. The debate of continuing the war was still very controversial along this experiment and there was no unanimity in the spheres of society of continuing or stopping the war although a higher proportion on the intellectuals did want to continue it.

@@korozif4140 Ofc a foreigner knows better about the history of my country… The French commune is credited of being the first communist experiment in history. Housing and wealth inside Paris was requisitioned and socialised and it built the basis of many communists experiments to come. So yes the french comune was a communist revolt maybe not of the likes of the Chinese or Russian, but yes it was.

The Commune of Paris lasted from march to may 1871, but the fighting really lasted only about a week. This is before the Commune though, and during the previous siege of Paris by the Prussian army (which lasted until the 29th of january, 1871).
