I made that trip in 2013 ..my first time travelling from Australia …my family is from the UK in 1826 and this was my first trip “ home “ ..the thrill I felt as we exited the tunnel into the UK will never leave me …I felt a strange feeling of calmness the trip was so interesting seeing both French and UK countryside and experiencing high speed rail travel was amazing ..I’d love to repeat it one day but who knows …

I think the Channel Tunnel has a lot of unused potential. The London - Paris connection is excellent (as well as some other destinations in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands) but connections to the rest of Europe are often horrible, with long transfer times between different stations in Paris. Direct overnight services like London - Berlin would be key to compete with flying.

The Eurostar even lost some of it's potential because of Brexit, I believe.

Brexit has made eurostar more expensive as the early departure trains have to travel half empty because of passport stamping...
@FrankyLon
@FrankyLon Жыл бұрын
The issue is rolling stock. The Channel Tunnel has very specific safety requirements for the trains and the traditional sleeper carriages don`t meet those. Custom build a Velaro with sleeping berths for example would be insanely expensive and eveywhere else the loco + carriages is a better solution for night trains as it is more flexible. (Demand tend to be seasonal.) Add other issues like passport control, etc. I don`t think we will see too many new direct destinations from London on the continent so focus should be improving the connections. For example some morning Eurostar trains could go to Gare du Lyon via CDG and Disnaleynad instead of Gare du Nord, this would improve connections towards the rest of France. In the evening same for the sleeper trains towards Switzerland, Spain. Amsterdam or Brussel should be a Hub for night trains towards Germany and so on with Eurostar services timed to connect to these.

I used the Eurostar service many years ago when it still departed from London Waterloo (Int.) Station. I booked a day trip to Paris and I really enjoyed it, it is so much faster than the plane if you travel from one city centre to the other. Only thing that I remember on the negative side was the quite small seat spacing at that time in the old "TGV" like trains.

I'd contest that the "most useful" high speed service is probably the Tokaido Shinkansen, from Tokyo to Yokohama, Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka. They run as many as 13 trains per hour just to have enough room for everybody! There is no other high speed line in the world, to my knowledge, with such a high frequency. That's a 400 meter long train nearly every four minutes. Bonus: seats on the Shinkansen N700S recline all the way back to a 45 degree angle so you can sleep comfortably.

A bold claim ! I would say that some of the HS routes in Japan/S Korea/China are as useful. As for "buried every relations by plane on the same route" ... yes you are correct when travelling to Paris or Brussels. But have you checked how many flights there are to Amsterdam from several London airports ?
@fugf1623
@fugf1623 2 жыл бұрын
@@alexmcwhirter6611 Nope they are not. The HSL between Paris Bruxelles and London aren’t just high speed lines, it’s a really big thing and a reason why a lot of strangers visit those countries in the first place, the channel tunnel is a world known monument, on top of being the most profitable HIgh speed route in the world. Amsterdam to London is a different thing because it’s not as close as Brussels and Paris. You can go to London in 1hr40, city to city, how the hell do you want to beat that lol, it’s unfair
@alexmcwhirter6611
@alexmcwhirter6611 2 жыл бұрын
@@fugf1623 ironically London to Amsterdam by air is around 220 miles so the train takes a longer route. As for profitability this would be impossible to prove (rail industry is secretive) but Japan has far more HS trains between Tokyo and Osaka and China now has a huge and busy HS network. With China check its latest Fuxing HS trains where the business class seats are similar to first class on long-haul flights. Now if only Europe's rail operators had something like that !

I feel it's also a question of availability, it's not really a choice, for the vast majority of Europe fast trains are not available. As an NZ visitor to both London and Paris I've used this service several times in standard class (pre-COVID) and have always enjoyed it from a comfort, value and convenience perspective. I'm guessing the Chinese high speed trains, which I've also travelled on a number of times, were the inspiration, they are very similar but with really outstanding on-train service. Great stuff. An enjoyable video. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Howard, yes those HS lines in China were inspired by HS rail both in Europe and Japan/South Korea/Taiwan. China has now leap-frogged the above networks with its Fuxing trains which offer first class airline seating for its business class. See below. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/epicrMVnrsiVj6M.html

@@SuperalbsTravels Absolutely. I mean China never began constructing its HS network until the 1990s. Before than no sane overseas visitor would consider taking the train as travel times were so lengthy. In fact what Eurostar offers (on its Siemens trains) is similar to what DB provides on its ICE as regards seating. I elected to use the Eurostar on a trip from Australia, the only surprise I had was I thought the luggage rack area was a bit small considering there were a lot of people with luggage. Coming from Australia we were on the road for 5 weeks so both had big bags & carry on bags. In the end, the ride was fantastic, especially considering we arrived right in the middle of Paris. I had to run out to the front of the station to get my "Jason Borne" photo of the front facade and then go back to find the taxi rank. All in all a great experience. Re the taxi, I had taken the trouble of writing down the name & address of the hotel as I assumed the taxi driver would only speak French, perfect English, and a very nice chap as well.

Wonderful video. This certainly puts to shame the terrible lack of high speed train service in the US. The east coast is about the only place train service is close to being adequate and convenient. I live in Phoenix, AZ,the 5th largest city in the country and there is no rail service here and a light rail in its infancy thanks to political party indifference. This reminds me of my visits to many places in the UK and Paris. Thank you!

There's nothing in a 200 mile radius of Phoenix so HSR is not applicable there. Flying is far superior out here. Los Angeles is 373 miles away so that would take two hours, assuming they didn't do the route based on political considerations like California High Speed Rail and went down the median of the highway...but why spend the money when the private sector can get you there in an hour by flying?

There is no comparable route in the United States, not even between Washington DC and New York. Washington DC to Ottawa? I don't think so. Certainly your pissant city of Phoenix would not have such service.

Love the Eurostar, take it whenever I can, couldn’t imagine life as a European immigrant in London without it. I do find it a bit surprising, though, that you (and several of your train reviewer colleagues!) find the seats to be comfortable. Granted, I’m on the taller/bigger side, but even with the little adjustable seat lip I basically just sit in agony on the e320s the whole way. I find the armrests incredibly cramped, especially in window seats, and there’s something about the shape of those seats - probably the lower bit of the backrests? - that make for some of the least comfortable sitting on any modern rail vehicle I’ve encountered. Sitting on London tube trains for over an hour honestly feels more comfortable than an uninterrupted hour in an e320 seat. What am I missing? Do the train seat gods just have it out for me? Great video btw, love the channel, keep it up :)

I don't find the shape of the seat that big of an issue, it's the lack of legroom and the hard seat for me. Though this is the second review I have watched that actually complemented the padding. Perhaps the seats softened up since the last time I rode an e320 or refurbished e300. Still beats airplanes in terms of comfort though.

I think the 90 minute before departure rule is also partly due to Brexit. I remember being asked rather strange questions by border control at Gare du Nord post Brexit… Also, the Business Premier lounge is not accessible only to Business Premier travellers - passengers who hold an AmEx Platinum card or Carte Blanche Eurostar status also have access. (The lounges in Paris and London are extremely nice, by the way😋) Great video, big fan of the new format :)

Indeed. It's partly because of Brexit (more checks required) and the sheer volume of travellers. Consider the newer Siemens trains accommodate almost 900 pax ... that's like two A380s ! I have been following E* 's fortunes since it launched from Waterloo in 1994. At that time the check-in was roughly 10 to 20 mins before departure !

I really liked your video. But as a person who has never been on a train that goes under water, I was really curious about how the underwater construction of the tunnel was built and wanted to see what it looked like. All I got to see was total darkness. The train's speed was impressive and amazing at how short a time it covered that distance. Unfortunately, it won't be something I wouldn't ever be able to afford to do. That is what was so exciting about watching your video. Thank you for the experience. I definitely think the Eurostar process with checking in like at an airline into an "Airside" region is really weird and honestly detracts from the value of it. Not to mention inhibits Eurostars reach within Europe. Like IDK about you but I'd prefer it if all the formalities and checks only happened at 3 stations. St Pancras, Ebbsfleet Intl. and Ashford Intl. so that all that stuff could be kept to as few locations as possible, as well as allow for the Eurostar to reach more destinations throughout the continent and also allow for trips between midway destinations like Amsterdam-Calais for example, or even more if Eurostar were to reach further out.

The whole problem is the UK's ridiculous political decision not to join in with the Schengen agreement (not to mention Brexit) which has, and will continue to, hamper growth in UK to European rail travel. We've used the London to Marseille service a few times between Ashford and Avignon and the 'Lille Shuffle' is really annoying, and I'm sure puts off many travellers.
