Yeah but still 7h is still worse than an hour flight, it would be different with a night train, you leave in the night and arrive early non the morning. I would prefer Trenitalia maintained Thello instead, made much more sense since it served all cities between Milan and Venice, instead of Milan only.

@Niccolò Bonato yeah 7h is long but you are not counting the time off the plane. The time before and after the flight on the airport. And the time to travel from and to the airport cuz an airport doesn't lay in the city centre.

Trenitalia definitely has an advantage with this service as they know how to compete. In Italy, NTV's Italo service has been keeping Trenitalia on their toes. Before that, they were your typical incumbent monopoly operator. The Frecciarossa service was always good, but with the advent of Italo, Trenitalia has had to step it up. It's a good time to be a European train traveler.

Bring the Frecciarossa to Germany, and show that Milan - Frankfurt - Copenhagen, Hamburg - Munich - Rome, Amsterdam - Munich - Venice, Berlin - Munich - Bologna via train, including meeting office and infrastucture, executive seating, and top-class services are much better than flying in a cramped airline seat, and waiting to board an aircraft. And it is much better for our climate! Keep growing the high-speed TEN infrastructure.

I mean if Germany started building on the Rhine corridor and the Munich-Austria corridor Italy and Germany would get much nearer. Meanwhile here in Italy nobody's even talking about building the Verona-Bolzano HS railway, but I hope that one day Munich will be only 3 hours away from where I live

@Giorgio Fegatini Except for the fact that 1)Frecciabianca don't travel at more than 200 kph 2) from Munich to Bologna there is no high speed lines and 3) probably the service included a lot of stops. Then again, already from the northernmost city of Southern Italy (Naples) to Munich there are 1000 km that even with the trains with the highest average speed in Europe would be covered in some 4 hours. Engineers, managers and planners already do not expect people to massively take a train for 3+ hours, imagine when it gets up to 4 in the best of cases.

@@lorenzopassero8509 the Brenner railway is currently upgraded with two new tracks on a new alignment that will allow for speeds up to 200-250km/h effectively quad tracking the route and this is being done alongside the construction of the Brenner base tunnel + the railway between Verona and bologna already allows for speeds up to 190-200km/h. A very minor correction: while the first production run of the Frecciarossa ran from 2013 to 2017, last year Trenitalia ordered two more production runs: 19 to cover future Italian and French operations and 23 to cover the 2022 entry on the Spanish high speed railways. The SNCF knows to optimise costs. Trenitalia trains won’t be competitive because the train capacity is 40% more important in a TGV than in Ferriorossa with less employees. SNCF is profitable with Ouigo trains with Paris Lyon at 15 €. Now Treinitalia enjoys a 30% discount for their fees using the hush. Speed lines during the first 3 years. Then they will have to fight SNCF with less cost and SNCF come back in 2024 with new trains with even more capacity

@@lvthud You don't know what you say. France is as well absolutely best when it comes to train. So many cities are on the way of a TGV, TER, RER in Paris... You compare what is not comparable. People don't choose SNCF to get the confort you see in this video, they take it for vacation when it's cheaper than the plane. Italy is not better, Italy is proposing an other offer that matches more the needs of business people going back anf forth between Paris and Lyon. So on this line yes, Italy wins. Sorry Dave.

The big level-up for the high-speed trains in Italy happened when the private competition came to the market with the Italo trains ; before that the HS trains were similar to the TGV. The most valuable thing of these trains it the quiteness during the trip, compared to the constant rumbling of the planes; that makes even a 7hr trip very relaxing. In italy it actually disrupted the Rome-Milan flight line, now the HS trains are much preferred on that route.

In Australia, in the 80s, a great deal of work was done to plan a high-speed line between Melbourne and Sydney via Canberra. Journey time was around three hours. Surveys were done on many aspects, including the environmental effects and on the consideration of Indigenous heritage sensitivities. All was looking good until the Hawke government refused a quite reasonable tax concession (despite its sunset clause) and the project was killed, stone dead. I still have the book outlining the project, with tables, illustrations, etc..

totally agree, Frecciarossa Executive class is the best in Europe. We had the coach to ourselves on a short trip between Firenze & Venice, and it was hands down the best rail experience in all of our European travels. What Italy may lack in other areas, they utterly smash in Executive class Frecciarossa.

I would assume in the next year an E (for Spain) would joint those I and F in the ETR 1000 Frecciarossa. With the start for the service to Paris Trenitalia announced plans to put a Frecciarossa 1000 direct trip to Barcelona (no direct train between the two cities since the supression of the sleeper Trenhotel Salvador Dali). Two possibilities are being studied for the french part, one is via Grenoble and Valence (faster) and the other is going via the coastal line to Nice (this would cover the Thello service stopped from the first global lock-down). Also, Trenitalia subsidiary in Spain, Ilsa, has started trials and homologation for new Zefiros, classed as Serie 109 in Spain. They will start with services in Spain, plans are to reach France and Italy later. The commercial brand will be Iryo and the only doubt is how many levels of service will be offered, because the total number of seating is slighty different between the ETR 1000's and the new S-109's.

Omg you were on those trains? They got quite a resonance here in Italy. Anyway, I think Trenitalia will remove those cool stickers from the windows since they were all about celebrating European cohesion Italian-French cooperation and friendship and blablabla, but they'll be gone as soon as the hype goes down and this services become normal. Anyway, it's delizioso, delicioso is our Spanish friends' property🙃. Great trip and great report, unluckily it's a long ride, but with the Frejus base tunnel on the Turin-Lyon HS line travel times will get 2.30 hours shorter. From under Milan's duomo to Paris' Notre Dame in 4 hours, what a time to be alive, weren't it for NO-TAV in Susa Valley that have opposed the project for 20 years, though we're starting to see a renewed greater will to finish this project.

Great video Thibault, thank you. We travelled on the TGV Paris-Milan service a few years ago in first class and were rather disappointed. It didn't help that we also had to change trains unexpectedly in Chambery (it was a few days after an SNCF train crew industrial dispute and rolling stock was not where it was supposed to be - at least that was their explanation). It's fantastic to see the Frecciarossa going into true competition with the TGV service. I thought the rail fare was excellent value for money. We look forward to doing that journey again sometime in the future - and we'll definitely choose the Frecciarossa. Just hope by then they've removed that awful window wraparound as it definitely spoils what are excellent scenic views.

I can't wait to take the Frecciarossa from Paris to Milan, for as you describe, it has to be the very best train service in Europe if you opt to travel "Executive" Class. Yeah, because the French rail unions don't want to lose the privileges of one of the biggest salary and retirement received in France (they are better paid than the nurses in France...), they won after 10 years in the service more than 3500€ PER MONTH!!! And in the retirement, they receive 3000€, continue to travel with the family for free and continue to have access to the French Rail health system medicare... In the meantime, other employment sectors will never get those kind of privileges... And many, with the current retirement system, will never get more than 1100€ or less on their retirement pay! And the Unions do on purpose of choosing the days for the strikes on the big days of departure for holidays, using the train users like hostages... And no minimal services...

In the meantime, buses were full packed... So it's normal that the users started to use the fists, because, it's not the unions that pays the salary at the end of the month! I am sure the Executive class is very comfortable, but regarding "lots of clients", you must take into account that not many people can afford to take Business or Executive class (unless it is a business trip and your boss pays for it :-). This is reflected by the fact that only 8 seats are in the Executive class coach. You just cannot build a train only consisting of Executive class seats and run it economically. But we will see how the market develops. In Spain, people are more used to comfort than in France, but the inexpensive services like OuiGo and Avlo have started running last year anyway, so there is a market for a range of different classes in high speed trains.
