Isn't that because transport in the US has been hijacked by the oil-lobby in the beginning of the 20th century? There was a lot of propaganda for other kinds of transport just after the steam train was developing to electric drive. Don't know for sure, just asking myself.. because mainly all transport in the US are cars and planes... which is fueled by petrol... oil.

@Bruce Marsico No need for anyone to be hostile to anyone. Some people cannot handle cigarette smoke as well as others. The obvious solution is to have smoking areas and No Smoking areas. On the platform between trains would ideally be a No Smoking area, because no one deboarding can avoid the smoke there.

My parents and I took a train trip from Milan to Geneva, then TGV from Geneva to Paris-Gare du Lyon way back in 1987. The Milan to Geneva section went through the Alps near Domodossola, skirted close to the Matterhorn, went along Lake Geneva, and was truly the most impressive rail trips I have ever been on. The TGV to Paris was an experience - the French did high speed very well even back then! - but it is almost too fast and sterile to truly be enjoyed. I was a kid but I remember the whole trip very clearly! It sure beats Amtrak's Northeast corridor for the sheer variety of scenery!

Keep up the good work Paul. I travelled by bullet train in China last year and compared to their first class TGV first class looks like Chinese economy class. First class trains in China has fully lie flat bed, distance between 2 seats are about 2 meters, free food & drink and at 300Kms per hour you wont even hear the outside noise or train noise. It feels like you are floating in the air thats how smooth it is. Fast trains and special trains in Europe but in China its almost everywhere - you will see a bullet train passing your bullet train once every few minutes. It would be good if you can do a review of a bullet trains in China once the corona virus issue is over.

Love the French TGVs, and they're easy to book online. I have a comment egarding the famous restaurant Le Train Bleu at Gare de Lyon. I made a special effort to eat lunch there several years ago. I tried to speak French but was treated poorly by the haughty waiter. He even refused to bring me the (French) menu, which I would've had no problem reading, I was forced to choose from only three items on an English menu.The waiter's surly attitude and the limited menu made the experience truly disappointing. I notice that the prices are MUCH higher now than they were when I ate there. Really enjoyed this video, Paul.

@@scotttild Scott- Our trains ARE slow, by modern standards. Amtrak's typical top speed is about 85 mph. That's slow, in this day and age, compared to Europe, regardless of the distances involved. There are several corridors in the United States that would benefit greatly from true high speed rail. High speed rail is not something that works if it's only done halfway. An example of halfway is the current Northeast Corridor between Boston and Washington. Amtrak has spent decades making incremental improvements at huge expense that have yielded only slightly faster schedules, overall. In large part, halfway is because we have not been willing to step up to the plate and really revise things. If the NE Corridor were on a par with the European approach, there'd be grass growing at some of the airports. So, San Fransisco to LA? If it's done properly people will use it, and many more than you may imagine. And those passengers would go from downtown to downtown, without driving to the airport, parking, going to the terminal and going through security. Do you still think a one hour flight is one hour....? Peter Askin

I wish we had those kind of trains here in the Philippines, especially when many of the Visayan islands are interconnected with bridges. Can you also make a vlog of a train trip between Madrid and Rome please. You know I love Spain, and I've never been to my great, great grandfather's ancestral land.

Fantastic journey! I think you could make more train journeys than plane ones. Sky journeys are pretty much similar, especially from the audience view, but each train journey differs. Of course this is a personal opinion and only a reference.

You should travel from Dresden to Prague by EC, the scenery is beautiful

Yes! When I took that route a few years ago, we travelled in some old Czech carriages from the 70s or 80s, with really nice compartments rather than the modern open floor plans.

I did that route in the autumn of 2018 and it was absolutely fantastic. Took the train from Frankfurt to Dresden. Stayed the night in Dresden and then the next morning took the first train to Prague. The scenery was great!

High speed rail: like flying without wheels up. The Alpine scenery was nice, too (I am a master of understatement). I'm going to have to watch this again on the big flat screen.

10:42 sadly, it isn't the actual High Speed track between Turin and Milan. The TGV takes the "slow line" with top Speed of 200 kmh, the "fast line" take 40 minutes between the two cities with a top Speed of 300 kmh! But Is a esclusive for italian branded trains...

In Australia 200kph line speed is unheard of. 160kph is the best it gets in Australia with most routes well below that. You are so lucky to have trains going at 200kph and more

I really hope one day that there is TAV Lyon-Turin, so that Paris to Milan is done in only a few hours by train. It would be so easy to go on a week-end trip to any of the cities on the Paris-Milan line.

Some TGV routes do have complimentary meal service in first class - the "Lyria" routes to Dijon/Basel, for example
@nviewroyroyce
@nviewroyroyce 5 жыл бұрын
Not 100% sure but I think some of the Lyria have been changed to 3 classes... and there is no meal service for the lower priced first class(standard 1ère).
@barvdw
@barvdw 5 жыл бұрын
TGV Lyria is much like Thalys or Eurostar, daughter companies of SNCF and one or more other railway carriers which are distinct from SNCF proper, own management and policies included. The TGV to Italy was similar, I believe, until Trenitalia got out of the cooperation. It's since rum by SNCF alone.

I'm not sure inOui is low cost... I thought it was actually the new branding for TGV?
@freewal
@freewal 5 жыл бұрын
You're right. There ie two offers for TGV : - InOui (prounouncded In We) : Two classes, Free WiFi in First Class, bar coach, Large seats even in second class, frequent and regular journey. - OuiGo (pronounced : We Go) which is a low cost service : unique class : no first class, no bar coach, , optional AC plug, limited luggages, no WiFi. Basically it's like a low cost air company.
