I find the Parrot Anafi has a good camera, but it does tend to overexpose objects and bright objects lose detail. In this video I try out several filters from Freewell to correct the exposure problem. All ANAFI camera settings were on AUTO for this video.

I have to say that no matter that I own Mavic Air and I’m huge fan of DJI, with watching every single next video of the Anafi , I’m simply more and more in love in this drone, It’s simply amazing how accurate is doing its job, and the camera is pointing upward... DJI need to think about it ... The Anafi don’t need hasselblad on it ... It’s doing amazing job, don’t have tilt horizon problem ... No sensors = more sporty = Nice

I've taken just over 500 videos with the Anafi, all without filters, and I can confirm I have had to set the shutter speed crazy high for every one of them. I am looking forward to trying some filters on to get a more natural shutter speed.

I don't understand why filters would improve exposure unless the camera was running out of headroom to adjust for brightness. I look to the filters to slow shutter speeds for more cinematic motion. I got the cheaper silver ring set of six filters, but haven't tested anything yet.

Finally the first comment that makes sense here. In fact there is absolutely no use and no improvement in putting ND filters on such a camera, unless you want to slow down shutter speed (which is something that you often want to avoid on such tiny cameras). The only useful filter would be a GND, to help compensate for the very limited dynamic range of the sensor, but unfortunately no one produces them.

Thanks Captain, I have now suffered the purchase of the Freewell 8 pack. And I inspected your link on motion blur, and your elucidation on the eternal truth of shutter speed twice the frame rate- all for cinematic motion blur (but, if polarized, for sky enhancement, and glare/ reflection reduction. Much needed instruments it seems for the drone photographer).

Ok it looks better with the filters (except the ND8) but that does not prove filters are necessary to get a good image. Just that they're better than AUTO settings. If you had chosen a "sunny" white balance and reduced exposure (EV -0.7 or -0.3), or even tried manual ISO settings, the result would have been better for the filterless shot. And you could have saved 100€. Changing settings is less of a hassle compared to filters and what they entail: cost, careful installation, finding right filter orientation, choosing the right filter, waste of time + risks for the gimbal: many users report gimbal errors when installing before activation while others report risks and damage when installing after activation. In a nutshell, a test with optimal settings would be more conclusive :)

Parrot got it right on the integrated gimbal , because every 3 axis gimbal dji has , has horizon priblems , the phantom versions and the mavic versions the horizon never stays fully straight, even the evo has this problem .The electonic stabilzation in the anafi is more stable in the yaw , than it is on the the gimbal not causing an off horizon. Very smart thinking parrots part not to make it 3 axis.

Thanks for the video...I'm trying to decide if i really need the Freewell filters. While I do see that some of the higher filters (.e.g, ND32 & 64) do reduce the brightness and glare , I personally don't see a HUGE difference in the video "quality" that would warrant purchasing them. And couldn't you adjust for the exposure using the camera EV settings to address brightness differences...Granted that wouldn't help with the glare but unless you are flying with reflective backgrounds (water, glass, etc.) how much of a diff would a Polarizing filter really help. Also don't you have to ensure that the polarizing filter is installed at the correct angle to maximize the polarizing effect of the filter. Doesn't Freewell provide an "index marker" on the filter to ensure that the filter is installed at the correct angle? Thoughts? Suggestions for this type of comparison video: 1 - It would have been much better to have shown a comparison of the various filters side-by-side on a split screen. This would obviously make it much easier to see the differences in the images. Otherwise you have to try and remember how the video compares rather than seeing them side by side at the same time. 2 - Short of doing the above I would at MINIMUM add a timeline in the description to make it easier for the viewer to skip back and forth between the various filters for comparison purposes. 3 - It would be better to kept the titles (which ND filter was in use) up for the duration of that filter's use...otherwise it's hard for the viewer to jump back and forth to try and make a comparison of the filters.

@@CAPTAINDRONE798 Thanks for the clarification...I actually found and watched your video you referenced after posting my question. BTW, I didn't know that you were a professional sports photographer in a prior life...Pretty cool. I'm trying to determine which of the Freewell packs to choose: - ($49) Freewell Budget Kit E-Series - Camera Lens Filters Set 6Pack ND4, ND8, ND16, CPL, ND32/PL, ND64/PL - ($69) Freewell Bright Day-Camera Lens Filters Set 4Pack ND8/PL, ND16/PL, ND32/PL, ND64/PL - ($99)Freewell All Day-Camera Lens Filters Kit 8Pack ND4, ND8, ND16, CPL, ND8/PL, ND16/PL, ND32/PL, ND64/PL In your opinion which of these packs offers the best $/value? I'm looking for one that includes the "key essential" filters that I would need. I live in sunny SoCal near the Ocean. Another video that I watched on Drone filters suggested that the key essential ND filters for sunny climates/conditions were the ND16, ND32 and ND64...It seems (maybe I'm wrong) that the the lower numbered ND filter would be less critical than the higher numbered filters because at lower light the shutter speed could be set slow enough without a ND filter to still achieve a smooth video (sufficient blurring). Thoughts? Also the Budget Kit is made of normal optical glass with NO COATING whereas the other two kits' filters are made of optical glass with 16 Layers of multicoating. Does the coating affect the video quality or the effectiveness of the filters? What purpose does the coating serve? Would you consider purchasing filters without coating? Thanks.
@CAPTAINDRONE798
@CAPTAINDRONE798 5 жыл бұрын
@@jetmartin9501 I can't tell you which pack is best for you because it all depends on your lighting and what you wish to film (video is so very different than photo). For me, I only use ND Filters in the high range (ND 64) for photography. When it comes to video, it all depends on how fast I'm flying, how low to the ground I am, what the conditions are for lighting. I guess on average an ND32 and lowest of 16 would be wise. When flying on days where I need to bring out more contrast when flying in a straight line at 90 degrees to the sun, I'll use a polarized filter.
@jetmartin9501
@jetmartin9501 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks...I realize the answer is an "it depends" answer so that is why I gave you an idea of what my typical conditions would be (i.e., bright sunny soCal likely at the beach/around water). From your answer you stated that you tend to rely on higher # ND filters (ND 16, 32 & 64)...Since I'll likely be filming around water I'll also look for ND/PL filters in that range. I know that won't cover all scenarios but it seems like those would be the most essential filters for me to have...So I'll go with a kit that includes all of those. Did you have any thoughts about my Coating vs Non-Coating question?

You should disable HDR for this test as you are not shooting simultaneously bright and dark scenes which is why the shots look so saturated. Excuse my ignorance, but if in auto exposure the Anafi over exposes, why would a ND help? Depending on the strength of the rating of each ND, all your doing is removing stops of light, but if the Anafi is auto correcting, would it not just bang up the ISO and bring it back up to the slight over exposure? That seems to me a light metering issue. Is there no exposure compensation in auto? Can you not just drop a half stop? Unless of course ND means something completely different in the drone world? In videography or photography, the ND allows wide aperture in full sunlight, or creating motion blur in bright light and flash sync speed in bright light. When you place the ND on a drone, are you not you just opening up your aperture or raising ISO in auto? How does the ND compare to manual shooting, manually bringing down the exposure? Thanks for the test. Im interested in purchasing an Anafi.

In fact there is absolutely NO USE in putting an ND filter in front of it, not to mention how stupid it is to put a polarizer in a fixed position on a moving camera. Unless, of course, you want to slow down the shutter speed. If you want to have the best image quality, you are not going to put any filter on such a tiny camera. You just have to adjust it properly.

An other strange behavior : take a shoot in Wide mode, with sun on the rear right, you should see an strange reflexion on the top of the picture. Thank for the video and see you.

Hello, no I have not noticed that. I turned the power off on the ANAFI each time I changed the Filter (so that I didn't cause any gimbal issues). I flew around my area with the ND8 and ND64 Polarized filter and didn't notice any issues from the sun. I know that if you have the sun shining from the side with any drone camera, you will get lens flare or sun reflections. It sounds like in your case the sun is bouncing off something on the ANAFI and then onto your lens.

I also read about gimbal initialization problems with the filter on before startup. My drone failed initialization with the lens cap on, but I just tried with a Freewell filter and it initialized just fine with the filter in place.

Thanks Captain for the answer. I confirm the power off when installing the filter. Actually, the initialization problem seems to be link to sensitivity threshold of the gimbal, to avoid constrains when Anafi is power on while gimbal is not free. Regarding the reflexion on the picture, I confirm the phenomena. To reproduce it : select Wide mode, place a high ND filter, and take a shoot while having the sun in the back right (roughly 45° on the rear - right) with a little elevation (the morning or at the end of the day). Have a good day Captain

Hey, Our filters weights less then 1 gram so it is putting almost no negative effective to your gimbal, At the same time we have done 500 times gimbal initialisation test before shipping the filter out of our door. So pls recheck if filter is installed correctly. For any help you already have my email but here it is again freewell@freewellgear.com Thanks Harry

Has anybody got a Mavic Pro (not a Mavic 2) and an Anafi? Buy one set of filters! I just looked at my Anafi this morning, that looks very similar to the Mavic around the lens. Taking the lens cap off the Anafi felt very like taking a Mavic filter off. I wonder... I tried my Mavic filters on the Anafi, they don't just push-fit on easily they fit BETTER on the Anafi than on the Mavic! On the Mavic I had problems with the gimbal being overloaded when I used a filter. The Anafi looks great with Mavic filters on and the gimbal moves smoothly. Naturally I don't suggest you just take my word for it and use your favourite filter on the Anafi in a howling gale or on a once in a lifetime video opportunity without experimenting a little for yourself but it has to be worth a go. I think the Anafi lens cover should also work on the Mavic Pro.

Great video !! Unrelated to.the video , how likely are parrot to add new flight modes in the future for example sphere on the DJI range ? Just curious if that's it or they will develope more ?

Good question. Parrot has sent out a few firmware updates, but I have not seen any new features. They do have the option of adding further in-app purchase features, so you never know.

Nice video! I notice that the horizon on parrot anafi's footage is off, almost every time. Is that a calibration problem?

Actually the ANAFI is the only drone on the market that does not normally suffer from horizon issues. I didn't see it in this video (wonder if it was just the way the background looks).

ND filters should not give you any visual difference, all they are supposed to do is to cut light so you can shoot lower shutter speeds.

I've noticed that the color saturation seems low, compared to DJI products. Are there no camera adjustments for EV (exposure value) and "color profiles" (like Vivid .. or saturation adjustment)? I'd like to get either an Evo or Anafi to replace the 2 Sparks I just sold, so I'm watching a lot of video. Cheers.

The ANAFI has HDR (which is not that great) and Exposure Value (which adjusts your shutter & ISO in one). The EVO has a VIVID color selection.

I got these filters and everything over the ND4, the Anafi tells me something is blocking the camera and I need to reboot, making them useless. Maybe I have a bad unit? Really trying to like this drone but between this filter issue and constant SD card malfunctions while in flight, I'm thinking of returning it and keeping my mavic pro. I was so close to ditching the Mavic before these issues.
@CAPTAINDRONE798
@CAPTAINDRONE798 6 жыл бұрын
Blocking the camera? Is that because the camera is hitting something when it moves upon boot up? For the SD Card, I never take it out due to the terrible card slot design. I just leave it in and transfer the photos video via USB (it is slow, but that is the only option).

Hey love the videos can you tell me what would be your pick if you could only have one. The evo or the anafi. Thanks
@CAPTAINDRONE798
@CAPTAINDRONE798 6 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you need it for. If I was taking a drone with me on vacation that I would not fly very far away, then it would be the ANAFI. If I was filming items that I wanted an above average quality of video detail, then I would select the EVO.

CAPTAIN DRONE so do you feel for animal filming like horseback and hiking the anafi is better. Thanks again
@CAPTAINDRONE798
@CAPTAINDRONE798 6 жыл бұрын
The ANAFI would be a bit more quiet than the EVO, if noise is a factor. If you are standing in one spot and filming people riding and the ride a half mile away, you would start to get video interference with the ANAFI. You would not get the interference with the EVO. If you ride the horse and have the controller in your hand, then the ANAFI has a better follow me (it can follow you and do so nice tricks flying in and out). However the ANAFI has no obstacle avoidance, so it will run into objects that are taller than you. The EVO can follow you and has front and rear obstacle avoidance. Your other option is the MAVIC AIR. It does pretty much everything great, except it is a bit noisy.

CAPTAIN DRONE wow you are very helpful. Thank you so much. I think anafi might be better fit then as my mavic pro is to loud around animals they get spooked.

I have the Anafi and it’s quiet, we always remain discreet! And follow me mode is very well done. Obstacle avoidance is not an essential option for me because I know how to fly. I do not regret my choice.

Captain Drone, Why did you not ordered directly from the official Parrot Shop. I living in the Netherlands, ordered directly one Anafi and one additional (second) battery without any problem. Arno Lasoe PS: Enjoying watching your drone videos on KZfaq.

Hi Arno. Unfortunately the stores that have the Parrot Anafi battery available are in the US and I am in Canada. We have some goofy border issue with sending Lipo batteries over the border, so I have not found someone yet who will ship.

@CAPTAINDRONE798

Do you only get the error when the filters are on the camera? If so it is most likely because you put the filter on the camera after powering on the drone.
