I’d say one of the best things you can do to manage your game is build some easy-feel wedge gappings. Ideally you want different lengths of swing for each wedge, at a similar feeling speed, that produce various distances and flights. Everyone has different thoughts for it, some people use a clock reference (so 9 o’clock, 10 o’clock, full etc), some people use body references (arms to chest, to shoulder, to ear height), I like thinking about 50%, 75% and full with each wedge. So for me, a 50% 58 degree will go 60 yards, a 75% 58 degree will go 70 yards, a 50% 54 degree will go 70 yards but lower than the 58, 75% 54 degree will go 80 yards, 50% 50 degree goes 70 too but lower.. and so on for the rest of swing lengths - also means you can play a 70 yard that stops quicker or a 70 yard that maybe rolls a lil, but it’s all in the feels. A little long winded I know, but hope the point gets across 😂 I’d definitely look to spend a lot of time on short game and putting though, that’s where if your game is strong then you can bounce back from the occasional messed up longer shot. LOVE the production though, the angles/vibe of your filming is awesome!

thanks man! glad the quality of the videos gets recognized! and thanks for the detailed comment. Makes a lot of sense with the hole gap thing.. right now I only have one swing really when swinging clubs.. I need to put a lot more time in getting that feeling of the gaps. appreciate the advice! Going to put that time in for sure.

@@quaypotts it’ll make a big difference, especially for your confidence with partial shots. Like if you know a half swing 58 goes 60 yards, and you have a pin that’s 55 or 65 yards, you can just make the half swing and take the chances with the putt rather than playing the lottery with the wedge 😂

Hey Quay, I am a golfer with about 5 seasons of experience, and am a huge advocate for online learning (even though I have received lessons). I love how you play, and see that you have a lot of potential. Here are some things that I see that might lead to better results: 1. I recommend taking your glove off as I feel it gives me more touch around the greens, and even up to 55-60 yards. 2. I recommend keeping your feet a little closer with a slight flair and about a ball apart for close chip shots. 3. For green reading, I have learned that anything inside of 4ft on a 1%(2.8 degree) slope is always inside the cup. 5ft is where you play it on the edge, and 6ft is where you start playing it outside the hole. Also, I like reading at the putt from three directions: in front of the ball, behind the hole and on the side of a slope. 5. I think on lag putts that you should aim to be no more than 2 feet past the hole. Hope this helps. PS: Love your channel

Great video! I’m also 2 years in on my golf journey. Can you do a down the line view of your putts? Would be helpful to hear you talk about what kind of break you see then see the putt from down the line behind you. I struggle with course management. I always go with intentions of playing the course safely but a little devil on my shoulder says “what would tiger do” 😂 ⛳️

Only been playing for a year... wow. How about "I remember when I subbed to Quay, and he had several less zeros on his sub count lol" As far as help reading putts, for the speed, I practice swing before putting by looking at the hole while practice swinging. It lets me build a muscle memory right before the the real swing. It's really helped me get a good speed for any putt. Its like tossing a ball into a basket, your eyes are on the basket, which helps your brain tell your muscles how hard to work. Same principle. Love the vid though, keep up the great work bro!

Definitely tee up when you can, take advantage of that. Camera tip, i know bokeh looks nice but for sports i’d raise the f stop up to atleast f5.6, ideally f11. Helps when you zoom to where the ball lands for a clearer image and faster autofocus
@quaypotts
@quaypotts 6 ай бұрын
I only like using tees when the tee box is really bad. Other than that I go off the turf. I just like it better. More comfortable for me. Alil unorthodox I know but I struggle hitting irons off the tee. As for the camera tip. Will take it into consideration. But for me the purpose of my channel is to make golf look a little different from others. Again not ideal but it’s just my style. Plus going any higher than f4 during night rounds is damn near impossible unless you’re okay with noisy footage. But idk, I just really like that cinematic look. But some shots could be at higher f-stops to get the ball landing for sure. Thanks for the feedback!

Bro. Get a package of 10 lessons. A coach can help you with the basics and help you practice what you need and build your fundamentals. After you finish the lessons and put in some serious practice time, it's time to go back to coach and get a full bag fitting. Trust me. 10 years in and i wish someone told me this 7 years ago!

@@quaypotts... this may be a bit lengthy of a response. If you are saying your swing has changed so much since you started, you could benefit greatly from a session with your fitters to check out your numbers, lofts and lies. That alone could be all you need to tighten up what seems to be on a great track. I am by no means a professional and am in the rebuilding stages of my game although I did start from being a 23 handicap and got down to a 10 (very close to 9) before my car accident that resulted in a multi-level lumbar fusion. In fact, I did 9 months of healing from that all to find out a screw was broken and had to go back down and fix it all up and as of today, I am 3 months post-op the second go round. Saying that, I had to get re-fitted and change my shafts completely because my original ones were so stiff, it made it almost impossible for me to swing them. Now I will have to relearn my game with lighter shafts, weight, lofts and such all over again to the new limitations. Another reason why "fittings" are important. You have from my eyes a great swing in the making. I am not one to make a lot of critiques and leave that to the pros but the three things I try to strive for are 1: consistency off the box even if it's 210-230 yards in play vs 260 plus in the woods our out of bounds. 2: no two chips and 3: no three putts. The bonus one to that if you struggle with putting is to get a closer proximity to the hole from your approach, pitching or chipping. That of course boils down to a strong mental game and course management putting the ball in places that will allow for you to attack the flag. Well at least for me, I know I won't have the distance and if I want to be competitive, I will have to be accurate and deadly inside of 100 yards. The last thing I would say is that it appears you may have ever so slightly a similar issue I have which is the down stroke picking up speed and displacing it just before contact of the ball vs at the contact point and through the ball. The accuracy decreases quite a bit if the timing is off. Again, take it all with a grain of salt but I just found your page and was drawn to it as I am on the journey of getting my game back to a decent level, losing what I had and having to start all over. I look forward to more of your content and oh... I am jealous of the lights. West Coast got that right!
@quaypotts

All valid points And picking up speed on the down swing has definitely been an issue. Coming from an athletic background I get in my head often.. trying to use that athleticism in thinking I need to overpower the ball. It’s a mental hurdle for sure.. But man sorry for that accident! But happy to hear you’re back to playing the game .. blessing you’re able to do so.. sounds like it was a pretty bad accident. Wish you all the best bro! 🙏🏾 Keep grinding!✊🏾

@@quaypotts yeah it was a pretty bad accident but so grateful for the opportunity to even have a chance at golf again. I am not back to playing as I am only 3 months post-op for the second surgery however I do feel I will be able to return this year. Hopefully solid play by Fall. I know that feeling coming from an athletic background and “throwing that arm” over top. That was the exact motion I was working on changing before I went back down. Really trying to lay that arm back and more relaxed but letting the left arm and hips lead the way a bit more. Among other things but… I see you won’t be having much of an issue with your dedication and for sure will make it to that single digit handicap. Keep plugging bro!
