The R44 and R46 are the very first subway cars to used the iconic door chime where you can “Stand clear of the closing doors”. This door chime has become a staple for the MTA, and it was later used in R62, R68 and R68A subway cars, except the two Shuttle trains like the Times Square/Grand Central and Franklin Ave. Shuttles as well as the SIRR trains.

R44/R46 cars that could of resemblances of the Chicago subway car groups and others even though the 75 feet long subway car fleet sure had more speed into them and run better the high tech train car groups, this cars in their overhaul programs can last a lifetime because there are stainless steel aluminum too and solid!

As of these cars had been graffiti free and reassigned to the E F G and R trains which the R44 cars assigned to the A train earlier in years the D E F and others assign of lettered lines too! These are the basic trains too!

Good to hear from you guys doing one of these time-consuming historical topics. I perfectly agree with you making it into parts since these rolling stocks have a crap ton of fascinating history within them. Great job as a collaborative team, and I cannot wait to see what part 2 holds. I want to mention that each R44 and R46 pre-GOH door chime very likely sounded different. The one that you just showed was an R44 pre-GOH door chime. However, the R46 pre-GOH door chime likely had a longer tone but possibly slightly different from its post-GOH counterpart. Here are a few examples of the recorded R46 pre-GOH door chimes: m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d6egoKeBz7i9kmw.html (0:41, 15:01), m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pdihaMV3rNnIfYk.html (1:14), and even Trainluvr’s comment in this video (m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fp2PppyBybrchZc.html) also confirm the case (he said it sounds the same as post-GOH but it sounds a bit different for me). You still sometimes hear the R44 pre-GOH chime on a post-GOH R46 because, during the R44’s and R46’s GOH years, some R44 pre-GOH door chimes were embedded into the R46 post-GOH cars. Regarding the graffiti epidemic, JULIO 204 was the first person to start in Summer 1967 at any Upper Manhattan stations, followed by TAKI 183 in Summer 1969 at the exterior and interior of subway cars. The major graffiti epidemic really started in 1971 at the 137th Street Yard, so the R44s came into the TA property with terrible luck. Vandalism and high crime in NYCTA were already a thing since the early ‘60s; by 1973, graffiti became a hot mess in NYCTA. (Larry Peerce‘s The Incident (1967) demonstrates very well). (Sources: production--rtbs.netlify.app/amp/articles/train-graffiti-history/, www.at149st.com/hpart1.html, beyondthestreets.com/blogs/articles/taki-183-the-originator, www.disastercenter.com/crime/nycrime.htm ) While many say that the R44MLs retired in 2010, that is not technically true since 388-398 are still running on the SIR and 399 as a storage car in CIY. The black section around the front windows was removed on the R44MLs and R46s in 1979 due to extensive graffiti, and the R44SIRs removed theirs at the same time as their overhaul in 1990. 1979 was also when the R44s received modern rollsigns and car number plates based on the R46s, and both began to receive the current-day route emblems. Also, the first discovery of the R46’s flawed untested Rockwell International lightweight trucks occurred on March 28th, 1977, three days before the R4s-R9s retired (R1s already retired on 12/1/76). This meant that the MTA scrapped the R1-9 series too quickly and did not anticipate problems with the R46s. Because of this, the R46s were one of the biggest reasons to cause chaotic schedules throughout most of the B Division lines in the ‘70s and ‘80s. (Source: erausa.org/pdf/bulletin/2006/2006-03-bulletin.pdf ) I know that I am saying a lot here, but knowing things that occurred during the R44’s and R46’s beginning life is one of many ways learning the Transit Authority’s history is fascinating.

B & O Railway means the cars come from Baltimore and Ohio.
@luislaplume8261
@luislaplume8261 2 жыл бұрын
This was the only part of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad that was electrified. The short platform near the beginning of the video was the Ferry terminal to one of the branch lines that originated in Jersey City, N.J and had a stop across from Staten Island where the Staten Island line ended. This service ended sometime in the 1960s.
