I am currently rebuilding an M44 and there is, in fact, a TDC mark. It is a tiny mark on the crank pulley and an arrow on the oil filter housing. It is usually quite difficult to see on these engines since they always leak tons of oil through the front covers.

Hello, looking for help. I own a 1997 BMW e36 318is coupe . Had a rod knock on my M44b19 engine. Crankshaft has been done. Bought new rods and new bearings, gaskets and more. After assembling the engine. The car wouldn’t start. So I checked the fuel pump and the pressure in the rail and it’s all good. Next I checked sparks. I was only getting spark at cylinder #1 and #3 so I changed the ignition coils. Wouldn’t help. Double checked the timing and all was in place. Crankshaft is set right. Exhaust/Intake camshafts were in the right place. Also changed the camshaft and crankshaft sensors for OEM sensors but the error still occurs. Checked all the grounds. Next thing that came into my mind was that the DME was bad. So I contacted a local shop and got a DME with a chip for immobilizer and still I have the same problem. Tried checking all the relays and some wires and it was ok. I have a diagnostics software called INPA but no errors came on. I’m getting really desperate because a lot of time and money is invested.

so the tensioner is suppoto be just finger tight? that cant be right there is no way that is not goin to vibrate out finish your videos man or why else make them

So when replacing the chain tensioner do I have to release it for full tension prior to starting? If so how?

why not just mark where you take off the spakets and then reinstall them. if you dont move anything what changes? just wondering i dont have the timing tools thx

I have a 1995, pin does not go in at TDC. It's weird af. So I'm about to just time it like normal but the flywheel slot is nowhere near TDC and I had to grind the pin to even fit.

Hello nathan.. if I use camlocks and zip tie timing chain to gears can you keep timing the same? Never done timing on double overhead cam motor, just single v8 Ford.

Hey Nathan, I would like to ask you if you could write down the procedure of cyl head tightening all the way. In video you saying 55 pounds is the final step (I assume foot-pounds). First time I've been installing head onto the block, I did a stupid mistake of forgetting the head bolt washers, and tightened it all the way with BMW service manual tightening specs (30NM -> 90deg -> 90deg). After that I replaced the bolts one by one without replacing the head gasket and with washers in place of course. That wasn't good of course I just had to try it out as some people on the web proposed to be a possibility. I had air in my cooling system and overheating so the head gasket was pretty much blown right away. After that I replaced the head gasket the proper way, again with that BMW proposed service manual way and with washers, and everything right this time. Checked my cyl head for any problems, and as I assumed there was none as it was machined like a 2 weeks before placing the first gasket and car didn't even run for an hour. And I have no idea why, but the issue remains. My main concern is that 55 foot-pounds you saying as a final step. If you had any experience like this one, please share it. My next plan is going to take the head off again and take it to be measured, even tough I cant see any problem by eye on it. And I did clean up the engine block surface, but will try to straighten it up a bit more precise.

Hey man great video!! I needed to know one more thing that you didn't show on your video which I needed to know. What position do you fit the gasket? Need to make sure as I don't want to do the job twice. The car I bought had no head on it and the headgasket is an after market with no indication on it. I'm really stuck here so if anyone else knows I'd appreciate it.👍
