Unfortunately I lost a large chunk of footage (about one hour of colouring time in total sadly), but in this video I show the completion of the page using coloured pencils. I also must apologise for colouring some parts off camera….technology and I have not been best friends on this page!
During the video I share my thoughts about creating colour along content for this channel, and I recommend the following channels as examples of those colourists I admire for their great colour along videos:
‪@Elmcolors‬ ‪@lucyjustaddscolour-adultco3135‬ ‪@RachelHendersonColouring‬ ‪@OlivierOdorant‬ ‪@ZucchiniKitty‬

Jackie I have thoroughly enjoyedthis2 part video. I love listening to you tell stories, or explain what and why you are doing something. You have inspired me, and I am using my inktense pencils brush to tip, instead of directly to the paper. I am also using my woodless water color pencils the same way. I have achieved some pretty good results. Thank you for your videos. ❤️

Thank you so much! I am a believer that most pencils have their place and you can work through a lot of the shortcomings, though some cheap ones truly are awful 🤪 Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could have our favourite brand in every colour imaginable and just have the one big set?! 😉

Beautiful page, really enjoyed listening to your thoughts as you work. My friend is bringing me 150 prismas back from her hol in US think I have them for around same as yours which is great I am able to get them open stock here in uk but not that cheap. Really gorgeous got a lot out of this video, loved the muted palette for background (I would of probably slaved away blending a pencil background which is quite off putting especially as I’m finding my hands are beginning to pain me as I age) thank you most appreciated ❤

They are much more expensive open stock here too - crazy prices sometimes! If you get sore hands it might be time to explore some water media techniques, it can lessen the amount of time and effort when colouring and you can use your pencils for the “finesse” and finishing off. Best of both worlds 😁 Thanks for watching, Jackie

Hi Jackie! I have a couple of really beautifull pencil sets but no PC’s… In the Netherlands the Prisma Colours are way more expensive than Polychromos, so what do you think? 😂😂🤣🤣..I see Chris Cheng colour fanstastic with PC’s but she hold them straight up otherwise they brake…. I am to heavy handed for such quality…Beautiful colouring, i love your loose approach jackie!

I think Prismacolour are really unlike any other brand - however I’ve managed to get by in my creative hobbies for many years without owning many of them 😉 It is a personal preference thing….some people do not like soft pencils at all and others love them. I always suggest buying a few open stock pencils from any brand before purchasing big sets because I’ve been really disappointed by some and had buyers regret😊 I do like Faber Castell Albrecht Durer (which I won ) and Polychromos a lot, and never regretted buying them.

I've use Prisma for over two decades. I used them exclusively for most of that. I have purchased multiple small sets, a full set, and tons of open stock just in the past four years. They are fine, no different than they ever were. Many professional artists use them exclusively.. if they were bad they wouldn't be so popular. I'm not sure how the "prisma bad" thing got started.. I think it was when hobby coloring became popular and people simply didn't understand how to handle soft artist pencils. We see this still with reviews on chalk pastel pencils where people bash them because they try to use a pencil sharpener on them.. you can't sharpen pastels in a sharpener you use a knife.. but they don't know that and try to treat them like a graphite pencil... then say the pencils are defective. You can sharpen Prisma in a sharpener but you need a rotary sharpener that uses multiple blades, and preferably an adjustable point. Handheld is best so you have more control.. I highly suggest the Dahl 133.. but I used a good quality (this part is important for motor speed and blade quality) electric for many years with no problem and many professional artists do the same. The issue is torque... you simply cannot twist them, they are too soft and they break internally. This isn't a fault it's a feature, that soft creaminess is what makes them awesome and unlike any other pencil on the market. You also can't drop them, leave them to rattle around in a bag loose, etc. You have to treat them like the delicate butterflies they are. You don't want to put a needle point on them, they are too soft. They aren't a "detail" pencil.. that is what Verithins were for. I adjust my Dahl to full sharp, then turn it back two turns and use this setting for all my pencils. I suggest a KUM (this has the closest point IMO to the Dahl) or other high quality hand sharpener only for when they get too short to rotary sharpen.. be gentle, twist the sharpener not the pencil, and be sure to change your blade regularly. If your small sharpener doesn't offer replacement blades it's cheap junk, don't buy it. Yes, they aren't capped and you can see the cores. This is on purpose.. artist pencils used to never be capped or sharpened, you could glue a new one to the stub of the old one and use every bit of it. Plus you can see the cores and hand select nice open stock. Caps are bad, they waste pencil and hide defects. Yes, there are a few crooked cores.. Derwent is 1000% times worse across all of their lines and no one bats an eye. You can see a crooked core from the tip too, if the wood is angled after sharpening the core is crooked. You do have to be careful where you get your open stock from, Blick for example ships open stock in a bag.. this destroys pencils. Either buy locally where you can touch them or from an online vendor that will pad and box your pencils. I've never had a tinned set come to me broken, but it's a possibility if your delivery guy kicks it across the truck. I have purchased directly from Amazon and they were fine. There are counterfeits out there, the last set I saw was from Temu. The biggest red flag is the factory tip, Prismas are very unique. Don't buy from sketchy sellers. When you get them, try putting down your darkest shade in the shadows, feathering the edge a bit, and then blending it out with the blender pencil.. it spreads across white paper like magic and "auto blends". This is my favorite way of using them in coloring books.. it's fast and easy on my hands. Julie's passion for coloring on YT uses this technique if you want to see it in action. The Prisma blender is the best on the market IMO.. I use it for all my pencils but none of them spread across paper like Prisma does. Coloursoft comes closest. The pastel shades are also amazing for highlights over other brands due to their creaminess and opacity, I use the white with everything but I keep a set of pastel shades with my Polys as well.

The earliest Prismacolor I bought over 20 years ago were awful, the barrels actually split open on some - though that has happened to me with some Stabilo too that weren’t cheap either. I think sharpening is the issue that puts many people off, and you share some great tips there. It’s all very much personal preference and I like to buy a couple of expensive brands open stock before I jump in on full sets, after a few disappointing buys in the past! Prismacolor white is definitely my preferred white pencil and I like some of the pale unusual colours so I’m looking forward to seeing the whole set together “in the flesh” so to speak!
@waymire01
@waymire01 Ай бұрын
@@Spare_Room_Studio That is awful.. I wonder if they were exposed to moisture or extremes in temperature? I haven't had a single split barrel. In the past four years I've only had one dud that was core fractured when I bought it.. it was open stock in my local craft store and I bet someone dropped it and put it back in the display. I was thinking about it and the "apply dark color and spread with the blender" technique is really rather like using watercolor pencils in the standard way.. only without the water. That may be why I enjoy it so much.

How do you feel the Brut skintones compare to the macarons? I really love the macarons, they are lovely to work with, smooth and pigmented, but they are very different to all the other Bruts sold. Pretty sure they are white labeled, not sure if they are a completely different pencil in core performance?
@Spare_Room_Studio
@Spare_Room_Studio Ай бұрын
I thought the same but put it down to the Skin tone set being new and I hadn’t used it much….The Macaron do feel a little smoother and more “buttery” - they are a nice pencil for the price range 😊

@@Spare_Room_Studio Thank you for the feedback. I used to have the Brut squares which were fine, but not as "buttery" as the macarons, and not as nicely constructed either. I had heard the squares and the standard colored barrels were basically identical but I wasn't sure if the skin tone set were the same as the standard ones.

That’s true, though I know they are reasonably priced in the US, for us Aussies and English colourists they are an expensive purchase, I’m not sure about other countries? Since you record on your phone and don't do a lot of fancy editing (totally unnecessary IMO), I wonder if it would be easier to just stream live straight to your YT channel? It would cut out the memory/transfer issues. I've done it to Facebook in the past but never to YT so there might be another step I'm unaware of.
