Hydro-Gear pays 3 hours warranty time for the complete O/H on most of their transaxles. Center section is the most expensive part thar usually needs replaced and runs about $200 retail. Complete 2100 series units run about $500 on EBAY. 2800 to 3400 series units run $750 and up. 5400 series is their top of the line commercial unit and are always black. They run planetary gears rather than the bull gear set up you see in this video. They start at around $1,000 per side. Left side is the most common to fail. Most people make more left hand turns with discharge chute on the right side of the deck. Left side is also the side where the belt is most likely to slip, because the belt is "pushed" around the pulley rather than pulled. Belt slippage, stuck by-pass valve, and low oil are the most common problems you need to check before you start thinking you have an internal problem with your transaxle.

I've ordered my Gravely oilseal, bearing and c-ring last week. 2 week estimate to get them in(I can hardly wait).. Watched your videos 10 times in preparation to do mine. I feel like I can now do it with my eyes closed thanks to your vids. The only thing left for me to do is stay in a Holiday Inn Express just to be sure.👍👍

Good video Bob. This should help anyone wanting to do this to their machine. I think you did a good job of showing how to reassemble the transaxle unit. A lot of other hydro gear units are very similar to this one just larger. Keep up the great videos buddy. Give the little man our best wishes and a hug. Have a great weekend. God Bless!!!

Definitely worth doing what you did. Not only that - you got to service the transaxles also. My theory is - if you have to replace the transaxles you may as well buy a new mower in most cases.

They were kinda pricey(think $30), but "Channel-locks" has a snap ring pliers that go both ways with the flip of a switch. They both draw, and expand, depending, and come with different pin sizes for the snap rings. I've really liked them and haven't found anything they didn't fit(so far anyways). My garage space is so limited, one tool for every job just works for me...

Nice repair, good job, I am concerned however with the looseness of the axle wheel seals. That didn't give me the warm fuzzy feeling! A dust seal fine, but an oil seal not so much. I guess I would have felt almost obligated to add some sealant to the seals seats.
@doublewide6
@doublewide6 6 жыл бұрын
They did seem a bit loose. Actually, it is only the brake shaft seal that is not held in place with snap rings. If it did come loose it would be a simple fix. Loctite would have helped.

Thanks for the video! I didn't see the bolt for the hub getting torqued down. When I try to torque it to 240-260 ft pounds like the instructions say, it starts spinning the axle and gears inside. So how do you torque it? Did I miss something

Don't take this the wrong way, it's all in fun. I do the same thing. I lube the moving parts and washers like you did. Then I put it all together and dump a few quarts of oil in it. I'm guessing everything is getting lubed once the hydro is filled.

On a semi-related topic - - I have about 5 acres to mow (not including around shop and [future] house). I also have a pretty steep pond/lake levee to mow. Any zero turns that you might recommend for such a big task? I currently mow with a 5' brushhog in the field and a 6' finish mower. Should I just stay with what I have or could a zero turn allow me to mow at a faster clip? I can't get out of second gear on my old 1958 IH240 without pushing over the grass instead of cutting it with the rotary cutter.
@doublewide6
@doublewide6 6 жыл бұрын
Gravely's are pretty solid zero turns. It depends if there is a dealer in your area or if you do your own repairs. Any commercial zero turn (the ones that are 9 -12K should do the job no problem) and way faster.

Very instructive video. I have to wonder about QC and product testing when a 42" ZTR can twist a 3/4" axle into pieces like that. The drive axles of small FWD passenger cars aren't much larger OD!

@doublewide6
@doublewide6 5 жыл бұрын
It is recommended for this repair to do both sides at the same time. This should be a Toro recall part because both sides will eventually fail. I'm from the line of thinking that if you going to do it just do it right the first time. Good luck with your machine.

Bob, I think use put way too much RTV the mating surfaces of the trans case halves. Also a much better gasket maker product is the Permatex "The Right Stuff" IMO ( though it is more pricey than RTV).
@doublewide6
@doublewide6 6 жыл бұрын
I am familiar with the right stuff I have seen Mustie1 use it several times. I did have a bit much Rtv. To be honest with you they should just use gaskets that fit the case.
@tomdewey9907
@tomdewey9907 6 жыл бұрын
I agree that they should of just used a gasket to start with, but also a lot of automotive manufacturers have been using The Right Stuff instead of traditional gaskets right on the assembly line.

Money in the bank...50% (or more) of the stuff that gets put by the side of the road just needs a little attention, maybe a part or two, some patience and a little skill to keep it going. I was just telling my neighbor (medically retired) how easy it would be to pick up $200 - $300 a month just keeping an eye open for the "junk" people put out for garbage. What can't be fixed or used for parts can be scraped for junk metal. Thanks Bob, it's always a pleasure to see you do just that.

I bought a used Husqvarna ZTR commercial mower that is over 20 years old and it is built so much better than this toy here. I have had it at least 15 years. Three belts (two deck and one hydro) a couple of pulley's and a used hydro pump $230 is all i have done to it. Toro should have to eat these axles, that is a design flaw.... When my current mower goes I won't be buying a Toro!

Man you basically made this video for nothing telling that you would as a service person just buy new units. That’s poor service if it’s just what you did. And the units are not the price you said they are more like $900 and I know I just quoted a new one. You did the job great positivity and customer service goes a long way. From a fellow repair shop don’t be so quick to discourage on fixing them.
@doublewide6
@doublewide6 6 жыл бұрын
I understand your point. I made the video mainly to help anyone that wants to repair their axle themselves. Really it is my belief that Toro or Hydrogear should have if anything provided the parts for free. Just not my type of job for a customer. It would have cost about $900 parts and labor for me to do both sides, but what if it leaked or didn't work, not the type of thing I want to be trying to repair again. I would only do the job as full transaxle replacement or just referred them to someone else.
@mikespain8655
@mikespain8655 3 жыл бұрын
Poor design from Toro and Hydro Gear, and good replacement by you. Amazon parts 1/3 the cost of OEM. Amazon is the Wal-Mart of online. Going to put lots of companies out of business. If parts and products weren't so expensive these days, more people would support the little guys. However, you have to stay cost competitive and save money.
