Ian Roussel continues his sculpture of a kustom 1968 Volkswagen by mocking up some Ford Model A and some VERY SPECIAL Windows
"Car Building Is Fun! Lets keep it that way."~ Ian Roussel
Ian worked and studied at a bronze casting foundry as a young man, where he learned to create models, armatures, molds and finished sculptural artwork in all mediums and finishes. Ian is fascinated by the artistic process of sculpture. He brings this knowledge to his car customizations, to his TV show audience, and now he brings it to you, his growing KZfaq audience.
The backstory...
Ian has decided to lower this VW Beetle 6 inches to get it to the ground and start radically modifying this beat up 1968 VW Beetle, but like most things that were once going to find the fate of the crusher, he once again proves you can do some amazing things in your garage with some imagination, fearlessness and a willingness to make mistakes as you create. 🥴
His fascination stems from the seemingly limitless customization opportunities for this vehicle. Join Ian on a wild ride through his mind 👽 as he envisions then fabricates his most radical ideas to date.

I agree with earlier comment. Eliminate the VW back seat side windows and just use the bubble windows on the side like the old panel vans. I like the small split retro rear VW window a lot but having all 3 seems unnecessarily busy. Just because you can doesn’t always mean you should..! IMO 😊 Love your stuff Ian!

I might be in the minority here, but I think the bubble heart windows wreck the Landau/Vicky-esque C pillars, which add heft and depth to the rear half of the car. There's an asymmetry between them and the rear quarter windows.

I’m with you on that. The hearts take away from the design of the car. A set of landau bars would be a much better choice. And more fitting for the Model A vibe. Then again, rotating the rear fenders so the kick up is coming off the horizontal instead of the vertical takes away from the Model A vibe. It’s going to be interesting to see where he takes this

Back in high school in the seventies the "shaggin' wagon" vans were everywhere. Chevy, Ford and Dodge all had them. Fully finished or partially done. The round pothole, hexagon, octogon, diamond and heart windows. Vinyl graphics or full on custom airbrush designs and murals. Keystone, Cragars or Ansen slots. What a time it was.

The hart window is great but cut a cardboard template and cover the window behind the door to see if it opens up other options to locate the hart window. Besides it looks like there’s getting to be too much glass on the side. Can’t wait to see the finished project.

Love the heart bubble windows, but I think the quater window needs to go so it gives it more of that van vibe or even those pinto wagon customs. The VolksShaggonwagen!

Looking good. I think for the heart shaped windows to work might have to not have the quarter window. Smooth sides all the way back from the door and then the heart window ❤

I was thinking that too, or leave those quarter windows as they are and graft the heart shaped windows into the back of the car for the rear window

Jamie, that's the shirt!! Junkyard Surfer! Is there a chance that those will or are available? Gotta have one!! As a teen of the 70's, (50th HS reunion coming up this year🙄) I'm all in on that Bug vibe!! This keeps getting better & better!!

I remember when I was about 8 years old, there was a VW "Bradley" kit car parked on my street. My Dad (who's NOT a car guy,) asked me what kind of car I thought it was, and w/o hesitation I was like "Corvette". Then Dad was like "but look at the exhaust" (I did,) and I became totally confused! Even more so when he said "it's a VW BUG!". (Mind=BLOWN!) Anyways, what I'm getting at is I miss seeing crazy custom bugs, so this is really cool for me! All your builds are incredibly creative man, please keep up the excellent, creative, DIFFERENT work!

First off, Y'all are awesome together. This Bug is one of the coolest I have ever seen. I really like the concept. I was glad to see you are going to cut the bottom corner of the door to work with the flow of the front fender, instead of cutting the fender to the door. Have you thought about suiciding the doors? You already cut the bottom hinge off. I had a thought, putting a Surf Board rack on top and a couple of 70's longboards on top...

I really love the fenders. It looks cool with the wheels and I like how you’re going to fix the door and the best thing is the heart windows are from my time in the 70s and it’s pretty cool. It gives the ladies touch that they like another great video, thanks Ian and Jamie. I hope I got your wife’s name right !

Love the heart windows. Bottom of hearts look better facing rear corner of 1/4 panel....everything flows to the rear.

Ian, i'm not usually a commentor but, I know you aren't a big fiberglass guy so, I have a couple of really great tips I often used. In order to make really nice panels or widen fenders etc... you can get a nice piece of glass and lay your fiberglass on it . Four coats really works nice and you can cut it reallly easy. Let it dry and a putty knife will peal it off the glass leaving you with a right nice piece of glass to use. I have tons more tips if you ever would care to know more. I love your work and creativity that you have. Being able to see your own creations come to life is the best ever ! Keep up the great work ! With all the materials you have you could make some really great stuff !

do it ! It's a lot sticky bur, results come quickly. Get a roller to help take out the bubbles that form ! I've got tons of tricks from working on Corvette's @@fullcustomIan

Use DIAMOND blade in the angle grinder for fiberglass and carbon fiber cutting

In my opinion, the heart needs to be lowered. Top should align closely to the side and rear window tops. Looks like about 2 inches or so. The build is looking funkier by the minute. Great work you two.

I like the way the kick up on the rear fender matches the curve of the hoop on the rear of the roof. Also, here's an idea... Suicide doors. Those heart windows are great also. I'm dubbing it the love bug.

Ian, if you mounted the rear fenders on a bracket, attached to the brake backing plate, they would travel up and down with the wheels, maintaining their tight-but safe-clearance.

I built a VW with hot-rod fenders mounted that way up front, and the brake backing plates can't take the stress and vibration without cracking. Even with light weight FB fenders, the wind and leverage just "brakes" them.

I can see suicide doors with the bottom edge radiused to clear the front fenders. Always loved Mel Brooks never understood why people got bent out of shape about Blazing Saddles being racially inappropriate to me he was showing us how ridiculous racism is and that made me laugh. You both are doing great keep it up I’m watching. 😉

@@dlux703But on the front, they'd be facing INTO the wind, which is probably much more strain. Also, I believe Ian would devise a sturdier bracket, OR possibly rubber isolate it.

I love the heart bubble windows. However I think if your going the delivery van look maybe get rid of the rear side windows. Block em out make it one panel and then put your heart bubbles more center in that panel. Just a thought

Slight suggestion on the heart window placement. Make the front edge vertical to match the vertical door post and have the point of the heart aim at the center of the curve of the bottom front corner of the rear window shape. Great project!

Very cool fenders and where you’r putting them plus the hearts. You could use some sort of wedge in the back of the fenders even so lights reflectors just a wedge to even more pronounce the flip up effect. Think bikes do that? You’re the master blaster - cool ride

I kinda want to see the heart tilted back at the fender swoop. I've always thought suicide doors with part of a front fender swinging with the door, but lines up to the rest around the tire would be cool, and functional.

It's a bobber Ian. I built a chopper in 1965 and I put an Indian bobbed fender on the back. Rotated it to show the Bob in the bottom of the fender ,just like your doing .
