A New Series exploring the Neuroscience behind Porn Addiction and how to overcome it.
Part 4 is about the Dopamine and Why Porn addiction is so uniquely addictive and uses inbuilt wiring in your brain to take over your brain. It also explains why your brain is not ready to resist this addiction instead it has been trained to embrace this addiction.
Please do your own research before making up your mind as science around this topic is still developing. Sources for every argument in this video: tinyurl.com/freemedu

I watched it over and over while telling myself it's completely natural to act on my feelings. Some three years later after becoming almost numb to it I'm starting to see the damage it's caused. I can only seem to "fall in love" with idealized versions of people in my head and I'm shockingly disinterested in real people themselves. I've made the most important step of identifying the problem, so I'm happy for that.

Interesting side note about that rat study. When they took the rats out of an artificial environment (cages and led lights) and ran the study in their own environment, none of the rats got addicted to flipping the switch. It’s only when the rats were under stimulated by being forced into an unnatural environment, were the rats able to get addicted. Basically it’s way easier to get addicted to something if you’re deprived of something.

FATHERS PLEASE TEACH YOUR SONS THIS. There are boys and men who watch porn excessively, it doesn’t help their depression, their quality of life decreases, they lose interest in everything else, some of them behave grossly to girls and women as a result as well, they sexualize everyone female they come across and can’t help it, it eventually affects their relationships.

@@Prashant-xl1rv sex talk is uncomfortable. Mental health and suicide related talks are uncomfortable. Doesn’t mean a parent shouldn’t have it with a child. Infact, mothers and even fathers have sexual assault conversations with their daughters, it’s VERY uncomfortable. Some fathers talk about consent to their sons too. None of that is easy. THESE ARE TOPICS TO BE TALKED ABOUT. If fathers don’t talk about porn, sex, practicing self control, consent, respecting women, having goals, etc to their sons, they take up whatever the hear and see from their social circles and social media. That’s extremely dangerous! There’s no shortage of boys and men who’ve ruined their lives with porn and sex addiction, they don’t have a single stable relationship, or marriage, are very depressed and some go further as to hurt women because they have no concept of morality when it comes to sex. No father wants their daughter to ever be around a boy/man like that. So these are necessary things to be taught so that those boys grow up to be disciplined, ambitious, respectful, mentally stable adults.

I was struggling with several forms of addiction all my life. Looking from the outside on it, how it was explained with the rat that activated the button constantly, neglecting every thing else in life, thats exactly how I was and still am to a certain degree. Understanding this circuit and decidint not to behave like that is easy with a rational mind, but when negative emotions come up you start craving this dopamie rush. When you re in the mood it is really hard to get out!

This is wrong and at best unproven. Without your brain functioning, your mind won't either. Your consciousness will cease to exist. Not everyone can do this. The severity of addiction is severely depended on a lot of different factors and some just have it way way way worse than others. Some would need to willingly endure unimaginable torture for weeks or months, even with consequences such as death or brain damage. I'm gonna say that if you can easily fight addiction, you were never really addicted in the first place or your brain chemistry made quitting it easy. There are stories of people quitting extreme doses of drugs cold turkey and that is just unrealistic for someone completely alone with no help. Considering i don't really believe in something like a "free will" i also don't believe that a person just quitting drugs is truely their "choice" or even an option. I argue that the people who basically die to addictions just never had the choice to quit because their brain composition just made it too unbearable to quit or their social and other life factors just made it impossible since you can't do it on your own and you need someone else to prevent you from doing it. Consciousness is really not a sign of a free will or free choices. Just because you experience things, doesn't mean you can actually alter them. To say anything happens in the brain without a distinct reason is just physically wrong. I think some people just get lucky that THEIR BRAIN allows them to fight the addiction, simply because it itself sees that its the better option for them. Some brains might not think that way tho. If your brain truely doesn't care about getting clean, you just won't get clean. It will torture you until you take it again. And addiction is a life long disease. You may get rid of the physical withdrawal relatively quickly but never of the addiction and this kind of addiction is just an unfortunate problem of todays time. If drugs wouldn't exist, you couldn't get addicted to them. It just makes you feel way way way better than anything naturally could. Who is to say that living a boring normal dopamin rich life is to be preferred than being that mouse hitting that button for weeks until you die from it? I mean a human being probably wouldn't go as far and he would still eat and stuff. But i mean if i had a wire going straight to my brains reward system, you could beat your ass i would hit it nonstop. Anything and anyone would. I have no idea how it feels like but if the mouse pushed it until it starved to death then it may be the most pleasurable experience anyone has ever had. Personally, i would prefer pushing that button for a month straight, instead of living another 60 years of depressing boredom. I don't know whats so bad about pleasuring yourself like that. Afterall all your natural pleasure reasons are just arbitrary reasons made up by your brain. There is no inherently valuable thing about watching boobs (aka half round circles of fat) and getting dopamin for it. Its pointless. I would prefer pressing that button because its just hijacking our brain for my personal gain and even if i wouldn't starve to death there, i would continue stimulating my brain like that throughout the rest of my life. It would be amazing probably. Thats just the nature of conscious beings.. we try to pleasure ourselves constantly as much as we can.

@joepromedio 2 жыл бұрын
@@RitaTheCuteFox I agree with many of things you stated, except on free will. Without an addict choosing to get clean and stay clean, the addict is doomed to continuous failure because they are being told their addiction is predetermined. I believe we need to be aware that there is a big difference between predetermination and predisposition. As a former heroin addict, I can tell you that without me choosing to not use anymore I would never would have kicked. Now after 40 (+/-) years I understand I am still an addict, but have chosen to not use. Telling people that their addiction is predetermined by physiological characteristics is hurting many addicts. The choices we make dictate the lives we live.

Funny thing is, I hate mobile games because they don't hit my reward system good enough. The dopamein is there, but I just don't enjoy the act of playing them. Most of them are shallow, and the ones that aren't are either rip offs more terrible than the original or just never polished because that's not profitable. Everything is about profit. To me, games are an art. Mobile games are just like crappy arts being used for money laundering and cash grabs. Hell, calling some mobile games as digital currency wouldn't be too far fetched. This is why the games that I like is good not just on a mechanical level, but on the emotional level as well, like Dark Souls.

You know what makes me sad? This is kind of what ADHD feels like. I have no will for anything except for what I enjoy and like then I can actually focus and get so much pleasure out of it. But anything else I barely have the will to stand up

@@tebo9334 I don’t agree because I’ve been researching this for years. Sure with a personal assistant and some tips and tricks and very strict regime I can improve, some. But literally some things I can’t do because I will enter a melt down and react in a way which is not normal. Don’t forget that autism and ADHD are “relatives”. Truly, I wish I could. I have alarms for every damn task, I have books, literally thick BOOKS filled with to do lists that I never finish. I forget to brush my teeth, even though my alarm clock tells me to, I’ll go in to the bathroom and forget why I am there and start tweezing my eyebrows instead. Imagine getting distracted for every new input you see. Brain is not functioning like yours. It does not make me less intelligent but i physically can’t do what a “normal” person can do unless you leash and whip me. My whole life is like the famous 90s movie classic “memento”.

@@SueyK94 You are right. ADHD is a real condition and medical literature has proven its link to low dopamine level baseline compared to non-ADHD people. New literature is proving dopamine production actually starts in the gut (influenced by genetics AND what you eat nutritionally and your gut lining can/cannot absorb properly. This is the gut-brain dopamine axis. Only a small percent makes it through the blood brain barrier to allow your neurons to transmit it for “normal” attention and focus levels (ie on those everyday “boring” tasks ADHDers struggle with). There are herbs and vitamins that assist with repair of gut lining and your neurons ability to uptake this dopamine and help it get to your brain. But it is a slow process and requires you to persist over time (if you break from a good nutritional diet and these herbs and vitamins, regular sleep with the aid of melatonin - ADHD symptoms come back hard and fast within 24 hours). Don’t give up - if you are researching the condition it shows you want to help yourself improve the severity of your symptoms. Perhaps get yourself a full blood count pathology request that includes vitamin levels check and also parasite stool test (they can rob a body from essential nutrients). While you wait for those results, try researching medical literature about specific vitamins and minerals and herbs and their effect on brain chemistry (eg. all the B Vitamins, A, C, D, E, zinc, selenium, Brahmi, Turmeric, L-Carnitine etc). Good luck and don’t give up. You are stronger than you realise. ✌🏽

There's no scientific basis for the claim that porn use causes erectile dysfunction. A lot of people seem to think it has caused their ED because they have ED and they've watched porn, but correlation does not equal causation. A much more likely culprit is performance anxiety or stress.

Im a med student and man this animation really got to the key points of the molecular mechanisms involved!!! Loved it! So good of you to share this knowledge and show to everyone, not just medical practitioners, the consequenses of masturbation and the terrible addiction it can turn into. Keep up the good work!!!

As a med student I enjoyed more the colorful animations more than the content itself. I know it’s meant to be an over simplification for the general audience but it failed to make a distinction between an addiction and a habit. Most importantly when comparing "porn addiction" to addictive substances that create physical dependence such as nicotine or alcohol. I’m all about mindfulness and mental wellness but there was much more that could’ve been said in this video.

In fact, dopamine has been shown to play a role in learning and memory, with higher levels of dopamine promoting better learning and memory consolidation. This is why we tend to remember events that are associated with strong emotions or rewards

Porn addiction was born from lust for me, used to lust after girls a lot as a teen and porn provided a quick fix so to speak. Never thought I'd still be watching it decades later, with anger and frustration upon trying to quit. The lust...was probably born out of a desire for acceptance and affirmation, as well as a response to rejection.

Currently going through it. And this is essentially me rn: I don't feel much of anything, at most I feel something but not what I used to feel, but I still wanna do it over and over. Why? Cuz the drive is there to just do it, even if I don't feel much of anything. Someone said it in the comments, but you don't realize you're addicted until you try to stop. That's essentially me, I don't even remember how or exactly when I started but ik why I started it. Started with innocent masturbation and ended up extremely addicted to p***. I wish everyone who is going through this alongside me the best and I hope we can all be free from this, keep persevering y'all ♥️
