Almost 3 weeks ago, I participated in the first Collab Jam, which was a game jam organized by Mickey. A bunch of other small game dev KZfaqrs participated, and it was a really great experience for my first game jam.
The theme was "The Unexpected" and in 48 hours I used Unity to make an endless runner game where you play as a fish and have to swim as far as possible through geyser-infested waters before getting blown out of the water. I called it Out of the Blew, which I thought was rather clever, although the wordplay may also have been a bit overkill 😅
Anyways, in this video I wanted to share my experience and the process of making Out of the Blew, and hopefully this inspires some of you to also finally participate in your first game jams. It's a great learning experience and can be a lot of fun, and participating in a smaller jam first will make larger ones like Ludum Dare seem much less daunting!

The more I watch my own videos, the more I begin to think that my taste in timelapse & background music is very dramatic 😂

Hahaha well then the music did its job :P I didn't really procrastinate much, but I also wasn't laser focused the entire time. There were a few hours where I didn't work on the game, but my intention hadn't been to do so which is why I don't really consider it as procrastination.

Congrats on finishing the game jam! You could try out Poisson-Disc sampling next time you need to randomly place stuff like the geisers.

@@tomweiland I used it first in a game jam project but only because I found tutorials and github repos by Sebastian Lague, took about an hour to get everything working smoothly.

Just finished the GMTK jam (First jam too) and would definitely get involved if you ran one of your own. They're awesome for learning to minimise scope and focus on core game mechanics and give you heaps of experience in such a short time.

Congratulations!! It was awesome. I would love to participate in your game jam, but I have never done one before and I am nervous that I would mess something up with uploading or signing up, so if you have one can you have a video on how to join/upload your game to it?

There's honestly not much you can mess up :P Once you have an account on itch.io, uploading the game is pretty much as easy is clicking _upload._ I don't think it's worth making a video about, and I bet others have already made videos about submitting games, so just make sure you give yourself an hour or so at the end to sort out the uploading part and any issues that come up!

@@Tornadoally Once your game is done you'll just build it, throw it all in a zip file and create a quick game page in itch.io with some screenshots and click upload.
